Gosh, wouldn't this (http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,12439210-13762,00.html) change your life?

Man survives being runover by tank

A NORWEIGIAN couple survived unscathed when a 40-tonne tank taking part in an international military exercise in central Norway ran over and crushed their car, military sources said.

"The accident is being investigated by military police. It is too early to say how this could have happened," military spokeswoman Pia Width SAID.

A Leopard tank taking part in the exercise involving 15 nations and approximately 14,000 troops ran over a Mercedes parked on the side of a road in Grong at around 6pm. Neither of the two people inside were injured.

"We stopped the car after pulling way out into the snowdrift (on the side of the road), but the tank just kept coming at us without stopping ... Right after that, the tank drove up on the left side of the hood and continued over the windshield and the roof," driver Knut Okkenhaug, 57, told Norwegian daily Aftenposten.

"I leaned over as far as I could towards my wife, but I could feel the car ceiling pressing down on my left shoulder. Right after that my left cheek bone was pressed against the ceiling ... Looking back on it, it is incredible that I survived," he added.

Width meanwhile insisted that the military was doing everything it could to avoid accidents during the ongoing "Battle Griffin" exercise, being held between February 21 and March 11.

"We have tried to make our soldiers conscious of the dangers that exist when they are driving on civilian roads ... One accident is one accident too many. We can thank our lucky stars this time that no one was injured," she said.

Mercedes? What Mercedes?

When I was in the FRG it was not at all uncommon for a cars to hit large, tank-like armored recovery vehices on the autobahn (rear-enders at 200kph even) without the recovery vehicles noticing.

Hard to see or feel much when inside a huge hunk-o-steel.

Of course, the thing with tanks is that although they may be very heavy, they are designed so as to spread the pressure out over a very large area - this is one of the whole points of having caterpillar tracks on them. I recall a demonstration I saw once - a ballet dancer on point delivered more pressure per square inch than a Scorpion tank.

Let's try it on cheap Asian cars! They'd just crumple into a nice block of metal. :)

I've seen two people run over by armored vehicles.

1. A soldier who fell asleep in Hohenfels while on road guard at night, and was run over by an M109 artillery vehicle. He died.

2. A member of the Iraqi Republican Guard in the First Gulf War who was run over by an M-1 Abrams. He had a crushed rib cage, crushed pelvis, and his arms and legs were broken in multiple places, and his feet and hands were crushed. But, his head never went under a tread, so he lived. Long enough to be taken to a US combat support hospital.

It would be nice to drive a tank if they weren't so fuel-inefficient and destructive to the roads. I might even commute in one.

YES! My next brilliant idea for a mobile home - build it inside of a very large half-trak!

The only problem I have with a tank is the poor performance on icy roads.

That, and replacing a track pad is a pain in the ass.

If the roads are made properly it isn't too hard on them. Curbs, on the other hand...

I know the US interstate highway system was built with moving armored vehicles on it, as well as the Autobahn in Germany...

the hummer is not an SUV it is a ASV Allterrain Support Vehicle origanally used by the militiary. The H2 is a totaly different story
