What this country needs...

In my opinion, what the US needs most right now, is fewer people telling us what we need.
And a Soviet Union substitute would be nice.
I must go to school now, argue as you will. If this thread is locked when I come back I shall be angry, and do nothing about it.

fewer people telling people what they need? less consumerism? less advertising? less international interest?
telling people what they need leads to debate, and arguement about what to do is always good. better that than nobody (in terms of international and internal political actors) tell the US what to do and you end up with some form of effective dictatorship.

I thought that the islamic world had been awarded this dubious honour.

The US needs a decent beer.
The beer made in the US is really bad, and shouldn't be called beer.

Have you tried some microbrews? Some of them are really good.
what this country needs? hmmmm...
1.) A president who knows how to chew his food, as this self-sufficiency would vastly improve my confidence in our leadership.
2.) Bush-lovers, don't even start, because kerry's an idiot, too.
3.) All canadians on NS need to get over their inferiority complex and stop bashing the US.
4.) This goes for everyone else, too.
5.) Sensible people in charge on a national and local level who don't enforce BS policies, but are instead concerned with issues that actually effect people.
6.) Cops that will stop muggings rather than pull people over for such chickensh-t 'crimes' as jaywalking.

Yes, but I haven't found any that are truly consistent year to year.
I was spoiled in Germany.

I think all beer is nasty but according to the marketing campaign for Sam Adams, they're better than all the European beers. Which really has very little to do with the thread, but seeing as someone brought it up.

Based on experience of both. The advertising is BS.

You are right, we need fewer people telling us what we need. But to me that means we need fewer lobbyists running around DC telling our Congressmen how to vote.
What we need is to split up DC. Disband it. Gone. Level the damn place, turn it into a museum, use it for target practice, whatever. Give the land back to the states that used to own it. Once done with that all US Senators and Congressmen are required to cast their votes live at the local courthouse in their town through a closed-network system. Debates etc... would be conducted via video-phone systems.
If you split up the center of power you destroy the ability for lobbyists to be an omni-present coercive force in Government. This would severely hurt the ability of Big Business and Big Environment and Big X, Y and Z from actually influencing our Congressmen. Instead their local community, where they live, where they work and where they stay would hold them responsible for their actions and their votes. Suddenly things won't be "In DC" they will be "two block down, 3 blocks left" and we would actually be able to hold influence over our Congressmen rather than our Congressmen holding influence over us.

Indeed. Sam Adams can't compare to German beer.
I find it funny that they peddle Beck's here. The only place I saw it in Germany was at the airport bar.
I have a fondness for a doppelbock that some monks in Hohenstaufen make.

I like Printz Ludwig Dunkel Weitzen from Koingsburg. Drank a barrel of it at a Medevial fest there in '89
I call American Beer (US, Mexico & Canada) barley pop. No flavor, no body, no alcohol.

The proper application of the 2nd amendment would stop this much quicker.

They're lying. Sam Adams' quality has dropped significantly since they stopped brewing small batches and subcontracted production to major breweries.
The proper application of the 2nd amendment would stop this much quicker.
Hear Hear. It would also obviate the need for Capital Punishment. No chance of a false conviction. That should make the Libs happy too. Right?

Isnt this wonderfully off topic
For those few who DID post on topic, thanks :)
Anyway, to expand on my first post, this is what I meant:
There are simply TOO MANY people jabbering at the govornment now, the reason the US is so screwed up is that the fact that everything that passess through congress is compromised to the point of uselessness because somebodies supporters demanded that a certain clause needed to be removed or added.
Thus a bill to, for example, build a new prison, becomes a bill to build a new orphanage which will never be used, while meanwhile, back at the Federal prison, its ten to a cell because 'Its jail, they should be uncomfortable.' or some similar witty line.
Personaly I think congressmen need to be locked in individual hotel rooms for the duration of their terms with no incoming communication except for a special news network run by some people who can be proven to be unbiased by some sort of special test.

Yes, let's only let our elected officials be exposed to media coverage by reporters specially trained by a government agency to be "unbiased."
As much as I can't stand the liberal bent in the media, you do see how that could lead to an autocracy? I'd rather have a free media and run the risk of it being liberal thanks.

The world is a very complex and complicated place. Is it safe to think that we can come up with a solution so simply?
Personally, I'm pretty sure a big Soviet Style enemy, as someone mentioned the terrorist threat resembles, would simply lead to a dangerous complacency in American politics. The threat of war always seems to let people make mistakes, do nasty things, cut corners, and corrupt themselves, "because there's a war on."
In the name of expediency, many bad things happen; I belive that this is poor government, and that it is morally wrong to condone such behaviors. I believe that corruption, mistakes, cut corners, and nasty things should always be avoided like the plauge. For indeed, they resemble a disease, eating away at the vital organs of a nation.
I've seen far too many example of war profiteering to be anything but wary of people who long for the Cold War mentality's return. It seems like a call for increased corruption, decreased transperancy, and the small host of other dangerous but often overlooked problems with good government.

Right. You need to start thinking by yourself.
