How many people have heard of this song before you went and googled it?Are you kidding? I was 16 when the 'freebird went down', as true Skynrd fans refer to the '77 plane crash that almost ended the band.

The live version recorded in Atlanta is the best.

is that the "one from the road" version? i like it, especially the couple of bars where the bass gets excited that kick off the second lot of guitar twiddling.

I can't personally condone the existence of Lynrd Skynrd.

FYI, Freebird is the redneck anthem. Lynyrd Skynyrd & Charlie Daniels can sell out a stadium in about 2 hours flat here in the south.

Rofl, I dislike most Skynyrd just 'cause I've heard southern rock most of my life most of my life(Death to CCR :gundge: ), but Freebird still pwns.

It taps into the redneck side of me.

God, to speed down a sunny high-way in a El Camino convertible while Free Bird jams out my speakers...

Not a big fan of the song. Good guitar riff. Can see why people like it

Heard of it? How could I have avoided it - it's not like we're talking about some rarity. It still gets a ludicrous amount of airplay. So yeah, not only have I heard of it, I've heard it far too often.

It doesn't improve on repeated listening.

And you left the "best song" button off your poll, so I had to settle for plain good.

It is an alright song, but I am sick of it.

I don't get what it is about a guy wailing some overwrought melody on a guitar that makes people go crazy.

I heard that after the plane crash, one of the band members went to get help and some hillbilly shot him for trespassing in his backyard. With his last breath, the musician said, "no, you fool, I'm with Skynrd." To which the hillbilly said, "I know, I reckernizerd yer when yer jumped acrost my fence."

Fantastic song. I'm English and been a fan for 18 years (heard it first when I was 16 - you do the maths!)

- Did you know who Leonard Skinner was?

- He was their High school gym teacher. They announced to him that they were going to form a band and he said "You'll never amount to anything".

One of their first gigs was at their high school, and they didn't have a name for their band, so announced "We are Lynrd Skynrd!" (taking the pee that they never graduated). After that it just stuck.

I used to play in a little jazz trio at cafes where there was always some knuckledragger who thought it would be funny to yell "Play Freebird!" (not to imply that fans of Skynyrd or the song are knuckledraggers, just the ones who yell that at jazz trios). I hit on the sollution to the problem after I stopped playing with them-

Put together the most f'd up free jazz version of that song and launch directly into it as soon as the trog yells his (always a guy) yells his request and play until his eyes bleed.

Other than that, it's an okay song.

Yep, knew it was a teacher of theirs. Didn't know he said they'd never amount to anything though. Where did they go to school? I know it was in Florida.. was it Jacksonville?
