Evil Facist Government Forces the Chicago Tribune to Pull Boondocks Over Bush Drug Reference

And the Chicago Tribune has resumed running Aaron McGruder's comic Boondocks after it pulled the comic strip twice earlier this week because of references to President Bush's alleged drug use. Monday's strip shows a character saying: "Bush got recorded admitting that he smoked weed." The comic strip's main character Huey replies: "Maybe he smoked it to take the edge off the coke." The comic strip was written in reference to recently released audio tapes of President Bush from 1998 in which he suggested he had once smoked marijuana and in which he said he had never denied using cocaine.

Skapedroe is missing (:( ); I thought I'd just post this so people can point and laugh at the articles that he generally posts if he'd be around :D

...That's sad. Boondocks is one of the better comic strips out there.

Whee, Censorship.

At least they didn't KEEP it pulled.

I thought it was a funny comic, and I tend to be conservative. I do like the Boondocks, except when McGruder is too preachy.

And its not censorship. The Tribune decided not to use their money to publish to comic. It would have been censorship if the government came in and forced them to stop.

You're saying that only a government is capable of censorship?

I would have agreed with the earlier determination. If a newspaper regularly prints a comic day after day, week after week, and only cuts out certain subjects, I'd certainly consider that censorship. Same with an editor that refuses to run a journalist's story because of political content.

The definition of censor (according to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary) is:

Main Entry: censor
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): cen·sored; cen·sor·ing /'sen(t)-s&-ri[ng], 'sen(t)s-ri[ng]/
: to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable

They certainly don't say anything about censoring being only the purview of a government.

No, its not censorship. The Tribune would have to try and stop the comic. All they did was not use their resources to publish it.

But the US constitution does.

As far as free speech vs. the dictionary definition of censorship.

What does the US constitution say on the subject? I'm not American, so I know only the basics.
