Police in France arrested 66 people for running a loosely organized pedophile ring. Children as young as 6 months were prostituted out for as little as a pack of cigarettes. link: www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/europe/03/03/france.trial/index.html

Add to that the fact that 25% of all convicted criminals in France are sex offenders and it makes you wonder what's going on over there.

Well, what is considered a sex crime in France? What is considered a sex crime in the US? Are they identical?

I admit to knowing nothing at all about the legality or illegality of certain sex acts in either France or the US, beyond the obvious - rape is certainly against the law in both countries.

If France has a higher percentage of prisoners found guilty of sex crimes, it leads me to wonder if perhaps France has broader laws regarding sex crimes, not a higher incidence of sexual deviancy. People are people are people wherever you go. Names change, languages differ, but inside, under the skin, we are all pretty much interchangeable.

I don't think people are interchangable. I think culture influences to a great extent what crimes will plague a given population. For example, In both China and the USA cocaine is illegal. Despite China's bigger population, who has more people locked up for cocaine?

Let's talk about that 25%. Does that mean that there is more sex crimes commited in France or less murder/theft/crimes passible of prison. Because the latter would also raise the % of prison inmate being sex offenders.

As such, that 25% prooves nothing at all. If you said that 25% of the entire population of France, or something similar, you would have a cause for concern. As I see it, it's not that France has more pedophiles, it's that they're more adept at cathcing them or not catching other types of criminal.

I believe you may have to take into account what constitutes a crime in France. Drugs laws may be more liberal so there would be less drug-related arrests so less people in this area are in jail making other crime groups seem disproportionally large.

Then the laws in France could be harsher on sex crimes while not so much in the USA (enter NAMBLA).

But I have to admit I have no knowledge on the French criminal code.

That just means France locks people up for fewer other reasons. The US locks up an unbelievable number for drug offenses.

EDIT: The United States arested 1,792,800 people for drug offenses in 1991 alone.

True. I guess maybe there is a reasonable explanation. Still, I would think theft, robbery, assault, and murder combined would comprise a bigger than 75% chunk of the prison population.

I realize that the permissive attitudes towards sex over there might account for a few sex offenders, but I think there are more realistic reasons for the high percentage of sex offenders in French prisons.

The problem is that it isn't consistent, according to the Small Arms Survey.

If you want to associate the rate of gun ownership with the rate of violent crime, the figures do not consistently match up, nation for nation.

In fact, they acknowledge that gun ownership has a salutary effect - it prevents or stops millions of crimes in the US every year.

They find that "why" you get violent crime and specifically, murder, is more related to other causes - that is, you can't prove that guns cause crime - at least not consistently.

Drugs, and the illegal trade in drugs specifically, is a much, much, much higher risk factor than anything else.

Legalize drugs, and you would probably have a lot less violent crime. Especially if the government subsidized the cost to the consumers.

We do, but coke isn't that expensive if you've got connections. For example Back in the day I'd get ounces for a little over $500. That works out to less than $20/gram. You can't tell me that the emerging businessmen in Beijing can't swing a few bucks for a gram of coke.

It's probably just as much a question of what they don't imprison people for than a cultural problem. For example, you're more likely to go to jail for possessing small amounts of illegal drugs in America than in France.

It isnt that a few businessmen cant swing a few bucks for a gram, its that there arent enough people who can swing 50-60USD to consume it. Not to mention a couple of other important factors

a) location of supply to consumer
b) relative purchasing power(gram of coke= 4+tips drinks(smalls) in nyc), What do you think the same $$ can buy you in china?
c)Are the chinese cracking down on drugs? If they are then 1) you wouldnt hear about it, 2) they would open a much bigger can of whoop ass on the offenders(jury of peers and criminals rights not being so important there)

So, do I want to sell to a market that can pay more and punish me less if caught or do I want to go find scraps and risk getting butt fucked? I am not a marketing type, but I think the former would be better.
