Woman ashamed of 'smelly husband'
March 02, 2005

AN Iranian woman is attempting to set a legal precedent by divorcing her husband because he has not showered for more than a year, a report said today.

The 36-year-old woman identified as Mina reportedly told a Tehran court her husband Reza smelled so bad that his children would not go near him.

"Everybody is making fun of us." the woman told the divorce court, according to the governmental Iran newspaper.

"We cannot go to any parties. I feel so ashamed."

Iranian women can demand a divorce only if they can prove their husband has met strict criteria – including being impotent, abusive, a drug addict, in jail, unable to provide for the family or living away from home for more than six months.

Objectionable body odour smelly is not included in the list of marriage infractions, although a legal expert said Mina could argue the stink had caused her to hate her husband so much she could no longer live with him.

Mina said that her husband used to have an obsessive compulsion to take "at least three showers a day and wash his hands every few minutes", but he developed an aversion to water, the newspaper reported.

"I have put up with him for eight years. I have had enough." she said.

I did not see "stay in the kitchen and cook like a good wife should" as an option, so no vote from me.

I thoguht it was legal to divorce your husband in Iran if he hadn't showered for a certain period of time, I guess that must be some other middle eastern country or random American state

there's a character (very minor character) in James A. Mitchener's "The Covenant" who showers once a year.

sheesh how awful would that be... you'd get within about ten feet of him and be hit by this horrid stink-cloud.

Apparently, one of the traditional reasons for the popularity of June weddings was that at the start of June was when everyone had their annual bath. So for the next few weeks, ppl weren't as stinky.

I once flatted with a guy who'd only shower and change his clothes (including underwear) once a fortnight. Ewww, did he stink!
And one year when I worked on a farm, one of the other workers decided not to wash his work clothes for the whole summer - just to see how bad they could get.
They got real bad. His shirt was hard and crusty by the end of the season.
This other guy's father turned up and stayed at the quarters we were in. He lived in his clothes. Even slept with his boots on. Would just get up, have a cup of tea and go to work driving a tractor all day. Come back, eat something and go to bed. For 3 months.

I remember hearing a story in recent months about an African man who was mobbed by his villiage and they jointly forced him into a bath. As Hillary said, "it takes a village."

I know in Australia its the law you shower at least once a year. I also know someone who broke that law.

In Iran that woman's husband could be thought of as impious too. I'm pretty sure that muslim prayer requires you to have at least washed your hands first.

The last option has the problem that Muslims are routinely circumcized.

When I was in the Navy, I had two similar experiences. One was this guy on the ship that somehow managed to GET OUT OF the shower dirty. His uniforms were never clean ( I'm talking black) and you couldn't face him when he was talking.

Another guy (reservist) opened up the curtain to his rack one morning when I was getting ready to go to sleep. This wave of stench hit me that made me gag. I talked to his supervisor after he had left and was told they actually had to order him to take a shower. It had to be supervised by medical personnel.

my response to this thread:

What I think she should do:
Invite him to the bedroom to have sex. When he lies on the bed, he will find out that instead of a bed, it's just a small pool covered with a sheet to look like a bed. At that time all his family jumps in from behind the curtains and forces him to take a shower.

I know a girl in my class that i dont think has taken a shower in the past 3-4 years. If you go within 8 feet of her you just get hit with a stench that makes you want a face mask and some goggles.
