Thief too stupid to send to jail: judge
From correspondents in London
March 03, 2005

A BRITISH judge issued an arrest warrant for a car thief he had effectively labelled too stupid to jail after finally losing patience with the man.

In January, Judge Paul Dodgson admitted that he was unlikely to imprison Mohammed Zaman because his crime - stealing a car and then driving it directly to a police station to confess - was too unusual and idiotic.

"You have committed an offence for which, even with your record, you stand a reasonable chance of staying out of prison, because it is an odd offence," Dodgson told the 22-year-old, calling the crime "a little bizarre".

Adjourning the case for four weeks for sentencing, and allowing Zaman bail in the meantime, the judge added: "Frankly you are an idiot and I hope you realise that."

"I do," mumbled the hapless thief in response.

However, Zaman failed to show up for sentencing at London's Southwark Crown Court and after waiting for an hour and a half, Dodgson issued an arrest warrant permitting no bail.

The defendant lived so close that he "could have walked here by now", the judge noted.

What an tosser. I think he's such an idiot that even if he didn't commit a crime I say we should send him to jail!;)

I can't wait to see how it turns out. Maybe he'll attack the judge with a rubber chicken next. :)

The man belongs in a mental institution, not a prison. Is he sane?

Some people committed crimes just so they could be thrown in prison in the past...Is it possible that's what's happening here as well?

Ah, that gave me a little chuckle!

Either his concience kicked in during the theft, or he is an idiot. Or it could be the concept that Medici brought up.

Either way I don't think that belongs in jail...somewhere elese...maybe house arrest.

White House!

Too bad he's from England... he'd make a wonderful POTUS. :D

He's obviously trying to avoid doing the dishes. Send him home to his wife/girlfriend/boyfriend/partner. That's punishment enough. :D

He'll probably be given his own show on Channel 4 before long.

Does stealing a car and then driving it directly to a police station even count as a crime? Isn't there a requirement for 'intent to deprive' before it becomes illegal or something like that? It probably depends just how he managed to steal the car I suppose.

We'll need the CSI to find out why he's so stupid.

He should be put in a tent with admission charged to view the live neurosurgery operations used to determine what makes him so much of an idiot...

You're probably right. But hypothetically if he'd found it open, would that have been a crime?

Theft = the dishonest appropriation of another's property with the intention to permanently deprive.

FACT.

The Judges " even with your record" indicates to me that the person most likely had spent a goodly portion of their life (even at age 22) in state custody and wanted to return to it. I suspect he might have a had a bit too much to drink and was homesick, so he figured if he stole a car he could go back to see a ll his friends. Not sure that's the case, but that would be my guess.

If he really wanted to go back into state care wouldn't he have gone to court when he was supposed to?

Offer him a job at the whitehouse, but instead of actually working there he could live with Bush in Texas and be his butler.

The news article is funny.
What is funnier, is that most people voted to give him a job at the whitehouse :P
Guess NS community has a good sense of humor.
