Do you have a Degree?

Do you have a Degree and if so, what level and in what? Also, if you do not have a Degree, do you hold any certifications or specialty skills that you've trained for?

EDIT:
Also, if you have a Degree in a certain field, but your job is something that doesnt have anything to do with your degree...tell us about that as well.

For those in school, what will your Degree be?

I guess that would put me as a degree in Historical Linguistics.

I have a Masters Degree in Optical Physics. It's not nearly as impressive as it sounds since I haven't applied it in the real world. I have a good job and a pretty decent life and none of it requires application of differential equations or Vector calculus. My higher education has been a waste of money for the most part. It makes for great dinner conversation though.

The specialty skill I'm most proud of is my uncanny ability to make a perfect apple pie. Really. It's true.

I've taken the first two years of an accelerated engineering program (technologist diploma.) Years, that is, which are transferable to a degree program, but I think my time for that may be up (you have to return to school within so many years of taking the program.)

The original plan was to finish my engineering degree and then get my masters in architecture. There are so many things I love about both in a scholastic sense - its just a shame that the work is hardly ever the same type of fun as the education. I have within me keen interest in organic/green building design, in particular heavy timber construction - I'm a little unsure though about whether or not following this desire will prove fruitful or not.

Either way, I'm having doubts about this being the right career path - structural engineering has proven quite stressful, and I'm not yet sure the joys are worth the pains. We shall see in due time which path I choose to follow. :)

I have a Business degree in Marketing - but the marketing bit was more of a final resort cause I couldn't think of what else to do to finish it. Nearly 1/2 the papers were Maths and Computer Studies, hence:
I also have a Science Degree majoring in Psychology, with minors in Maths, Computers and Philosophy.
I also have a Diploma in Sports, a Post Grad Diploma in Teaching, a certificate in Computer programming and a certificate in TESOL.
Not that I can remember much of any of it now. Still it was a good waste of several years rather than having to work.

Know how that feels. I was unemployed for a few years after I got my 2nd degree. I kept my sanity by studying p/t towards my diploma while looking for work. I remember once the dole office ringing me up and saying they had found a great job for me. I hurried down only to be told it was mowing lawns for $10/hr. Here I was with 2 degrees and having completed close to 50 Uni papers and they offer me a job mowing lawns.
They helpfully suggested that with my business degree I could consider setting my own business up after a year or two. I asked them whether I could use my Science degree to help analyse if the grass felt comfortable being cut, but strangely enough all I got back was a blank stare.
I can only decide that they delibrately hire ppl at the employment office who have not one fucking clue at all.

Anyway, consider getting a TESOL certificate - more money I know but it's worth it. Then travel. Head to Japan or HK or somewhere. I came to HK 7 months ago, owing $30 000NZ (half student loan, half VISA/Bank loan), and now owe $17 000 (Student loan and $2000 left on the Bank loan). And I've gotten to see some of China. Not much, cause my first priority's becoming debt-free.
So it's worth it. You don't need a Teaching Diploma - though it can help. But the important bit of paper is the TESOL cert. And not just teaching in private learning centres either. There's sometimes jobs coming up doing in-house training for big firms, which would look good on your CV with your PR degree.
Just something to consider.

Well, I dont go to school at all right now, in LM or other wise! :p

No, I'd like to take some night classes but sadly it is very hard to afford that while paying off existing student loans (I note: someone has already commented on the evils of education cost up there somewhere.)

I want to keep myself up to date and informed about practices and education that I am losing my grip on for lack of fully utilizing it at my current job. Also I want to make up for a dissapointing lack in language skills that I have (in particular I wish to learn Japanese, Italian and Parisienne French). Its just that my present state of affairs will not allow for such expenses - I'm on a tight budget. I will be back in school one day though, there are three more years to my freedom from debt - at which point I will hopefully be able to spend some time travelling and then go back to school. I worry that I will be a little old at that point to seriously pursue a career that would require a lot of further education - but we shall see, we shall see. :)

TESOL would bee cool... except I have to sort of hang out with my disabled wife.... (another thing that makes moving/getting higher level work difficult)

She's funny that way.

If I wanted to be a Prig (and have an altogether more "normal" life I suppose), I could get a divorce and make a pile of money in a couple of fields - even having to pay alimony. But I don't want to be a Prig - so I make do with what I can find within the parameters I have to work with.

I know how you feel...well, to some degree. Over £10,000 in debt myself, owing to a BSc (Hons) in Criminology. Which was (mostly) shit, so I am wondering why I am putting myself in even more ridiculous amounts of debt because of the PhD I am working on. It's more interesting than the Bachelor's, but still not setting my world on fire, so might just submit the research completed by September as a Masters thesis. Dunno yet.

Peechy! ( HUG )

I have two ( three if you count the concurrent major in undergrad school ): Batchelor of Science in Business Administration [ cause my father made me do it and he was paying most of my tuition at the time! ], and a Masters in Industrial Relations and Organizational Studies [ 'cause I wanted to! ].

Since I'm perforce retired, I don't actually use any of them anymore, but value the mental discipline of having obtained them.

I also have an expired National Emergency Medical Tech. Certification, a host of training certificates from the US Army, and a Certificate of Retirement from the Armed Forces of the United States of America. I'll forbear boring you with the multitude of certificates and certifications from GE and Exxon, most of which are long expired anyway. :)

no! my training, my wisdom! i'm not sharing!!

though i must admit, one of the things i LOVE about grad school is that i am able to contribute to science while progressing in my education. in my program, you are expected to produce a thesis work that takes about 4-5 years, and once you have successfully defended the complete work you are expected to divide up the "chapters" and publish them as papers. you also are permitted to work on side projects in your lab, and to accumulate publications, if you have the time to do so without ignoring your thesis. it's amazing; i can get paid to go to school AND be able to make real contributions (however minute) to science!

whoever invented grad school should be worshipped as a god.

I also have several professional accreditations in my field and am always working on keeping them current and adding to the list in order to increase my marketability.

Other than that, I am a certified ski instructor, sailing instructor, and qualified lifeguard with various first aid qualifications and certifications in coastal navigation. What can I say, I used to be a bit obsessive about my hobbies and pursued them into professional status. Thats swell. The one cat on here with a degree in rhetoric and (through a cursory glance through his (he said he was a he in a post) posts indicates that) he doesn't really debate. Fantastic. Perhaps it's because the arguments used here would probably make his head explode. (mine included...to be fair)...

Ah well...

You win the thread! Thanks! I also walk dogs and drive a track-hoe.

Many talents- none of them too impressive, but when you've got the right skill, you rarely need anything more.

Actually a construction technology degree here (at least at the school I go to) shares about half to 3/4 the courses as Mechanical Engineering.

For those that haven't figured it out, I'm going for my BS in Mechanical Engineering while minoring in Physics and Mathematics.

Dunno yet.
With that sort of background, you could consider committing the ultimate crime. You'd know more than most about how to get away with it.

I have a BA in Contemporary and Modern History and Politics.
Trying to get enough money together to go back to uni and do either a Masters in History and Russian or do another BA in Journalism and a foreign language of choice...probably Russian or Japanese, though I currently have people trying to push me toward taking a PGCE because I'm supposidly "good with Kids". Don't see it myself, hate the blighters!

no! my training, my wisdom! i'm not sharing!!

though i must admit, one of the things i LOVE about grad school is that i am able to contribute to science while progressing in my education. in my program, you are expected to produce a thesis work that takes about 4-5 years, and once you have successfully defended the complete work you are expected to divide up the "chapters" and publish them as papers. you also are permitted to work on side projects in your lab, and to accumulate publications, if you have the time to do so without ignoring your thesis. it's amazing; i can get paid to go to school AND be able to make real contributions (however minute) to science!

whoever invented grad school should be worshipped as a god.
Sounds almost as if you've discovered the best of all possible worlds, at least for you. Can you share some of your most recent work, or perhaps the work of which you are most proud?

Do you have a Degree and if so, what level and in what? Also, if you do not have a Degree, do you hold any certifications or specialty skills that you've trained for?

EDIT:
Also, if you have a Degree in a certain field, but your job is something that doesnt have anything to do with your degree...tell us about that as well.

For those in school, what will your Degree be?Yup, I have a BA in "Philosophy and Science" (it's a 16-course philosophy major: 8 courses of philosophy and 8 advanced science courses, I focused on psychology).

I definitely use it in my job... I'm a research assistant in addictions research. I'm currently deciding on grad schools for my Ph.D. in social/cognitive psychology. (And I have a few offers! Yay!)

theoretically, going elsewhere to get a phd. more probably, winding up like bodies without organs and doing something completely unrelated. ah, the joys of philosophy.

@ Peeches: missed you too! And I'm finally getting back to the swing of things... but I think I'm going to head off to bed very soon, because I'm not sure I've recovered from the jet lag! Staying in 3 different cities in a week was a little exhausting!

@ Free Soviets: well, I know everyone says that philosophy is a good-for-nothing kind of major, but I'm really glad I did it. Sharpens writing skills (and after writing philosophy papers, anything else is a piece of cake) as well as analytical and critical thinking abilities. Seems to have helped me quite a bit as I pursue my chosen profession, psychology.
