This is right from my local paper:
Protesters crowded downtown Beirut Tuesday as Syrian President Bashar Assad indicated he would withdraw Syraia's 15,000 troops from Lebanon
This is a terrific move by Syria and they better pull through on it. The paper also stated that "Russia joined Egypt and Saudi Arabia in trying to persuade Syria to wihdraw all its troops and Assad told Time magazine thatthe troops would be out maybe in the next few months. Not after that."
WTG Syria. Maybe your not as bad as people make you out to believe. Pull out of Lebanon and you could gain friends.
I'm Syrian and I'm glad to see that we're making a better international reputation for ourselves.
I guess some good things can come from the murder of others.

The murder of the ex-PM wether it was Syria or not, sparked this! Your right about that. Kill someone that the people adored and your in for some deep trouble.

I'll beleive it when I see it. Syria has dominated Lebanon since their civil war. I can't imagine they're going to give it up. They're just trying to make themselves look good so Bush won't take any action against them. I'm sure in a few days Syria will come up with some excuse to keep troops in Lebanon. Perhaps a terrorist will conveniently cross from Lebanon into Syria and blow something up.

Don't get your hopes too high. The BBC reports that
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has said his troops will leave Lebanon completely "in the next few months".

What is significant is the time scale. Lebanon is due elections in the next few months. I think a lot will depend on the results of those elections. It is also potentially just a way of letting the world attention move on to somewhere else.

It's good news. But I'll believe it when I see it....

Yeah it was nice to hear them say this. I wonder if it's true as the Syrian economy is failing and they have been using Lebanon as a lifeboat. (To paraphrase NPR)

About f*cking time. They should have followed Israel when they withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000.
