If I were to die...

If I were to die today,
it would be as I was born.
I came in loving no one,
and hencefourth I would leave.
'88 I had no reason to live,
'05 nothing has changed.

But my birth was one,
of love and care,
my death would be,
from lacking such.

First of all, from what I can tell you are either 16 or 17, and I would wager quite a bit of money that even if you are unloving you're not unloved. Second, if my conjectures are correct, I hope realise that depression is a very selfish emotion, and that there is more than yourself out there. Your death is not soley your own. that thought is probably why I am still alive today. Third, I'm not quite sure what "'88 I had to reason to live" means.

And, finally, if that was supposed to be poetic, it suck oh so much ass. It it was more prose than poetry, then it's fine.

A. Typo in the poem, edited.

B. Thats your opinion, I thought it was fairly good. The last part came out differently than I wrote it on paper, but I dont have the paper on me.

If you were to die today
Winds would still cuddle the lochs
Around my homeland
Chapped hands would still mend nets
Children would chase tin cans
Dogs would roll in mud
The slap of the rain on roof tops would hum a ditty

These you would miss, and more
My quick smile and a warm hand
You might never know

If you were to die today

depression is not an emotion and a lot of people who are depressed are also far from selfish

How DARE you say that depression is a selfish emotion. You have absolutely no idea what some people go through. My best friend spent her entire childhood being beaten by her mother; her mother tried to kill her more than one times and certainly threatened multiple times, and witnessed her father being beaten day after day. She has been abused her whole life by this woman who the law has refused to do anything about, simply because she is a woman and most police assume that women dont do that sort of thing.

I have another friend who has bipolar disorder. For those of you who don't understand this disorder, it means that the sufferer goes through periods of intense highs and intense lows (hence why it used to be called 'manic depression'). She goes through a hard time and faces social ostracisation when people see how it effects her.

Both these people are severly depressed, and for good reason too. Anyone who dares to say that these people are selfish has no idea what they are saying, so should shut their mouths immediately. People are more screwed than you think, and go through a lot more than you could imagine. Depression is not a selfish emotion; it is a cry for help.

very nice poem, Chellis. as for depression being an selfish emotion, a) it is not an emotion, but a chemical imbalence, and b) mankind by nature is pretty selfish. rarly is there a selfless act where there is no motive to better oneself (make seem popular, better self worth, have favour owed).

it is not an emotion, but a chemical imbalence,
good. this is often overlooked - a depressed person has no control over whatever their brain chemistry may be doing. selfish or no they have no choice in the matter.
