My dad taught me when I was 5 or 6 years old. He played way back during 1st edition. I started playing alot right before 3rd edition hit the shelfs.

I just learned a few years ago. I went to visit one of my friends who lived down the hall in my dorm, and he was DMing for another one of my friends who'd just seem the Lord of the Rings and wanted to fight a bunch of orcs, randomly. I sat in and watched what was going on, then I made my first character, Thargg, the half-orc barbarian, and joined with my friend in my very first campaign. Since then, I've mostly DMed, as it gives me great opportunities to tell my stories that I've written in role-playing form.

Oh yeah, I learned 3rd edition.

I got the starter set from my brother who basically never used it and started playing (with me as DM) with my friends. We've been playing once a week for about 5 1/2 years now. I rather sucked at it at the beginning, but now I can DM without ever having to prepare anything in advance. It all just flows naturally. (That is, I make it up as I go along; it's much more interesting when even I don't know for sure what's going to happen!)

I used to play D&D, (in my high school D&D club) but I got kicked out. They really disliked my chaotic neutral chars. But six months later, our high school decided to kick them out - they decided it was all a little too supernatural, or something. Parents complaining. What have you.

More fun than D&D was a superhero RPG we got into called 'Villains and Vigilantes'...now come to think of it, THAT was the game that got me the boot. Heh. I'd forgotten.

I'm sure if you found a store that sold the games in your town they have pick up games listed. Though that's a crap shoot. You really want to play with people you like, as there are so many types of gamers.

I don't play D&D any more... I guess I have to give it props for introducing me to roleplay but I think there are far better systems out there.

The Riddle of Steel (http://www.theriddleofsteel.net/) is absolutely awesome, the combat is realistic in that it is quite brutal and fights rarely last long.

Also, there are some other really good indie games out there like My Life with Master (http://www.halfmeme.com/master.html) which is really brilliant and fun if you like roleplay (and I mean roleplay... not the typical dungeon-bash D&D nerd stuff).

I've played AD&D for, well, more years than I care to admit. My favorite character is my gay, left-handed, alchoholic bard. For some reason all my favorite characters seem to be male. I still use 2nd edition, mainly because I'm too lazy to learn 3rd edition.

Where's the both choice? I'll still break out my DnD books for a good session of killing things and taking their stuff once and awhile, but I play other stuff more often.

Transhuman Space is just about as good as sci-fi rpgs get. And this is the third time today I'm going to pimp kill puppies for satan, so obviously I like that one. Kult is good, too, if you don't mind a really dark game.

Also, you can never forget Unknown Armies.

Or Paranoia. Because the Computer is your Friend.

It's role playing game. You play roles, you don't roll around. ;)

I used to play a lot (the paper and dice versions I mean). Started about ten years ago, and tried most of them. D&D, Warhammer, Star Wars, Shadowrun, the WOD series (Vampire, Werewolf, etc...). And some more obscure ones. I have a friend who's an excellent GM at Agone, and we still play that, occasionally.

Now, though, I mostly do the Internet variety: Play By e-Mail, which is essentially narrative writing, from the perspective of a single character. Star Trek universe, for me. No dice rolling, no randomness, but very enjoyable.

No, but it sounds interesting. How does it work?
You have a bidding system, in which all players invest their starting points in level of attributes, special abilities and gimmics/companions. In a situation where a comparison is needed you look at who has the highest level, or, if the same level, who invested more points. E.g. 20 points in strength might buy you amber-resident level, but if another player invested 21 points he has amber-resident as well but would win a struggle that just involves strength. The trick is to not take people head-on in their strong disciplines or involve a secondary discipline in which you are better.

Btw, i do play D&D, every edition that came out, and became involved in rpgs in my boarding school twenty years ago when stumbling across a bunch of people telling sort of a story by the fire-place.

The poll is somewhat inaccurate if you play D&D and other rpgs, like i do.

Jesus rolled the die (got infinity) and cast resurrection as a Bard. He also cast many necromancy spells.(go figure lol)
And the kids says, "but your a Christian". Jesus says, "nope I'm a Jew."

I like the game because it sharpens mind and you can try things out. There is even a class that emulates a few of his powers. Risen Martyr. Exalted class, but decent.

Nope, sounds good though. This has however trigged some repressed memories... has anyone here seen Knights of the Dinner table? :D

"So you take the red dragons flame breath right in the face, stagger backwards off a 100 ft cliff, fall into a pool of lava, and you want a saving throw?"

"Yeah, c'mon, don't have resistance to fire?"

i thought the spell names were cool and funny. But then, I was 11.

"Take That You Fiend!" toptastic.

We had lots of multi-user DM games. Much less concentration and geeky maths-related box ticking than with D&D. And stuff did real damage, like 6d6+4.

Now I'm started, how will the nostalgia stop?

I played D&D and AD&D (both 1st Ed.) once upon a time - I'm old enough to remember when Dragon Magazine ran "Wormy" and "What's New? with Phil & Dixie" (the original "What's New?").

I haven't played AD&D since before 2nd Ed. came out - I found better games.

I don't really play much these days, but I tend towards home brew rules. Settings and rules I like include:
Classic Traveller
Mega Traveller
Empire of the Petal Throne (2nd Ed. rules)
Twilight 2000 (a combo of 1st and 2nd Ed. rules)
Dark Conspiracy (good setting, mediocre rules)
Paranoia
Shadowrun (fun setting awful, awful rules)

Have played for over 13 years. Right now have a weekly AD&D game that is all Christian excpet for one player. It is pretty cool. Get really bent out of shape by some people in our respective churches that think D&D is the Devil.

I've played, D&D, basic, 1st, AD&D 1st Edition, AD&D 2nd Edition, 3rd Ed., Hackmaster, GURPS, TMNT, Ninjas and Superspies, L5R, King Arthur, Beyond the Supernatural, Wormwood, Rifts, Heroes Unlimited, DC, Marvel, Vampire:The Masquerade and many of the other White Wolf derivatives like Werewolf and Mummy and Mage, Robotech, Car Wars, Revised Recon, Champions, and many many more.

I once had more than $3,500 in RPG stuff, I had to get rid of it all and have been building it up again for maybe 5 years, I am up to about $1,000 in stuff again.

Got my wife involved, best thing I ever did, now she doesn't complain about all my friends coming over every Sunday afternoon after church and playing till 9-10.

Love Knights of the Dinner Table.

Shadowrun (fun setting awful, awful rules)

Don't you LIKE everything having 10 HP, but just getting more and more (and still more) dice and armor to everything? Ending up at the point where you willingly walk into a hail of gunfire because you know they couldn't do anything to you no matter what? (kinda like the Genesis game, where you end up walking through the Renraku building on full armor, only slightly slowing down when you're shot, then punch them with spurs because you're too cheap to buy the SMG/a few grenades.)

Other than that, D&D. Started playing 3rd a few years back, onto 3.5.

Actually, I forgot to mention that I don't roleplay much any more. I'm too busy now that I've become a satanist - conjuring real demons from the 9th layer of hell takes up a lot of my free time.

If that wasn't enough, I also have to make sure I've got time to convert poor innocent Christian folk over to the dark side and then make them take their own lives in the name of The Dark Lord(tm).

I used to play long ago. I miss it alot. I really enjoyed the role-playing. Dice rolling is not nearly as much fun. Not when you can be;

"Than Jhontur, with a blade as quick as me tongue, and a wit twice as deadly. You'll smile whe yeh look a me, and laugh at meh jokes. That is, unless yeh prefer the taste of yer own blood to that of my mirth! Now quit shakin like a little school girl and go get me an ale. You there! The fat one with the dumb face! Yeah, what are you lookin at - I ain't told no story yet - certainly not one big enough for the likes of you! Come closer and I' tell you of a man I once knew who was twice as fat and nearly as stupid lookin as you! I'll tell ye about how he slew FIVE Dreadknights of the Dark Land all by hisself! Aye, he was fat and stupid, but brave and lucky too! Come hear, I'll talk it to yeh..."

I've tried to play using WebRPG, but can't seem to find a good group. I even tried to gather some NSers to play, but the world has too many deadbeats.

It really sucks to get a good game started (I love to DM, but have played alot too) then have people pull no-shows and flake out. It is unfair to the others, and very unfair to the DM who has to bust his arse to get an adventure ready.

Maybe someday I'll find a new group...

Real conjuring? What, like this guy (http://www.theescapist.com/random011102.htm)?

Hehehehe... that guy is strictly an amateur.

No, as we all know I simply played D&D until Satan appeared before me and gave me some of his infernal powers in exchange for my soul. Without that key ingredient nothing will work, silly!

Of course, the rules lawyer in our gaming group tried to argue with Satan over the deal - something about how a legal contract can still be nullified in the courts if the terms of the contract are considered unduly harsh or unfair. Satan just dragged him back into the depths of Hell - we all laughed and then divided up the guy's dice & gaming books. I got to keep his 15th level elven ranger, pretty sweet huh?

The main drawback I've had in increasing my powers are the requisite virgin sacrifice... it is damn hard to find a virgin these days. Sure, I could just advertise in my local gaming store - the guys in there are bound to be utterly virginal but tradition states that it has to be a nubile young maiden.

Started playing 2nd edit. After that a friend introduced me to Gurps and soon I was playing more RPG's.

Named: - D&D 3rd + v3.5, AD&D Birthright, Vampire, Hunter, Warhammer (RPG), Lotr, Robotech.

Now I only play D&D v3.5, Gurps and Lotr, for it took too much time to play all. Most of the time I'm the DM, because of natural shortage of those guys/gals.
