If your parents were homophobic, how would you treat them?

A slight twist on that other thread what people seem to hate.

Of course, this is assuming you were gay. And assuming they weren't militantly against gay people, but made it quite clear that they greatly disapprove of you being gay.

I would accept it sadly, realizing that the grew up with a much more strict societal code.

The way PC thuggery is now, basically everyone who isn't 110% behind every ideal the gay movement stands for is, apparently, labelled as homophobic. That being the case, I wouldn't treat them any different for having a buzzword levelled at them.

If the shoe fits, but perhaps a less PC term would suffice?

Well...if a person cannot accept their own flesh and blood for who they are, then, I don't know what to say. I guess I wouldn't have anything to do with them I suppose.

Would you accept your son if he was a gay serial killer?

I find that gentle persuation (and many Mrs Merton Style "heated debates") works. A constant educational programme for homophobic parents is a good idea. If they really want to keep contact with their gay kid, then they have to come round in the end. Call me a dictator, but it worked for me!

Being gay doesn't hurt someone. There is a huge difference between accepting someone for who they are, and accepting what they do to other people.

But, you bring up a good point about my logic, so here is one of my patented Nuclear Cookies! :D

Well, I sort of ignore them, and when I see them I don't mention sexuality at all. And I try not to hear my mum talking.

I guess I'd treat them the same way I do other disapproving relatives. We'd be nice on holidays, civil but cool the rest of the time. I already keep a distance from my dad because of his attitude about my illness. Not because I don't love him, but because it's healthier emotionally for me.

There are plenty of things that I do that my parents really, really disapprove of. So nothing would change.

This happened to a friend of mine. I've known for ages that he was gay, but he only recently told his parents, as they seemed fanatically against homosexuality.

He finally confessed to his mother, who was in fact only upset because my mate had felt unable to tell her sooner. She was very supportive, as it turned out. They agreed to keep it from his father, however - that was until his brother let it slip.

Anyway, the dad hit the roof - he was angry, upset, embarrased (worried all his mates and aquaintances would find out) and felt like he'd raised my friend badly or something. Luckily, my friend managed to keep calm and rationally told his father that it was not something he could have helped, or that he could change for any reason.

When the dad had calmed down, he explained that he'd been brought up in a differently, with a whole different range of morals. He said that was primarily why it was so hard for him to deal with it. He said that he would try his best to put these old prejudices aside and at the end of the day, he still loved my friend no matter what.

Things are fine between them all now. I am not in this situation, but if I were I would hope that with time and information, my parents would come to the same conclusions. I understand that things were different for them, but at the end of the day, shouldn't they want you to be happy, whatever it takes?

Why is it always the dads?

I haven't told my parents, because I'm also a wiccan and my dad still doesn't really like that ("casting spells is unhealthy"). It's made me scared to come clean. The fact of the matter is, if you're underaged, differently oriented sexually, and your parents are homophobic, you don't tell them. Not until you move out. that's what most people do as far as I know.
