German Films
Hi, I am interested in German Films. I have the misfortune of living in the US you see, so movies here suck. I am particularly interested in films on soccer (or 'football' remember, I have the misfortune of living in the US). Any suggestions?

I don't know any soccer films.
Wim Wender (http://www.wim-wenders.com/) is cool, I'm also a pretty big fan of Werner Herzog (http://www.wernerherzog.com/main/index.htm). Any of the Oberhausen filmmakers, the ones that signed the statement of purpose to reclaim German cinema after WWII. Fassbinder is also good for taking an American film form (the mellodrama) and putting it in a new light.

Europa, Europa, The White Rose Society, Hanussen, Wings of Desire. None of them are soccer ones, but they are all good.

Not soccer but you should see Das Boot. It's the best war-movie I've seen.

Run Lola Run is the one that springs to mind for me, but Patra Caesar beat me to it. :p
Edit: And Goodbye Lenin, which Kellarly beat me to. :p

There is a football film in German, its something along the lines of "The Legends of Bern" I'll google it and check for you.
Got it! Its called Das Wunder von Bern (The Wonder/Miracle of Bern) and here is a linky (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3196782.stm) about it :)

"Der Himmel über Berlin" and "In der Ferne, so nah" - Himmel über Berlin 2, so to say. They were the originals to "City of Angels" or whatever the name was with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan (ugh), but the originals were much, much better.
This year premiered a fantastic soccer movie, about one of those table football ("Kicker") figures becoming alive and a great German football hero. The movie was an ode to football and especially to Günther Netzer, still the coolest player in town. ;)
Anyway, I normally hate football, so I really don't know the name anymore. Just googled, the name is "Aus der Tiefe des Raums".

I really need to know the name of that movie. No, really. It's a need. Not a want, a need.

Thank you. Just noticed your sig-Steve McQueen rules, Bullitt rules. Steve McQueen getting chased by two guys who look like Don Rickles and Paul Desmond rule. I'm going to go to bed to night with visions of forest green Mustangs dancing in my head...

I love German expressionism but maybe that's a bit too odd. Worth trying anyway. I quess Das Kabinet des Dr Caligari is the best known example and Fritz Lang the best known director.
Stalingrad, Das Experiment and Funny games (eh, that's actually from Austria) are alright.
Enjoyed Run Lola Run and Goodbye Lenin
I know only one football movie, something like Miracle of Bonn/Berlin/badenbaden...
I believe it's quite new and I haven't seen it.

There is "Fussball ist unser Leben" (Soccer is our life), which is a pretty good comedy. "Männer wie wir" (Men like us), also a comedy, involving a gay footbal team. Fresh from the Berlinale is "One Day in Europe", which features soccer but isnt centred on it.

It's not a football film, but it's kind of relevant to a lot of the stuff on this forum:
"What to do in Case of Fire" from 2002 is a darkly comic look at a bunch of radicals from the '80s Berlin scene who've all grown up and moved on (mostly) until a bomb that they made 12 years ago goes off...
Suddenly they're thrown back together and have to look at where they're at in life now and whether they want to stay like that.

"Das Experiment" is a faily recent one. A psychological experiment with laymen who were divided into prison guards and prisoners for 2 weeks. Interesting outcome.
"Herzlich Willkommen" about an orphanage during the Cold War.
A couple of films that were banned in Eastern Germany before reunification.
Here in Hong Kong the Goethe Institute shows once a year a couple of German films over two weeks or so, as does the Alliance Francaise (well, they show French films).
The annual art festival shows films from all over the world.
Try to search the Net for actors:
Moritz Bleibtreu, Til Schweiger, Manfred Krug, Pierre Bliss,

I quite liked Anatomie and Anatomie 2
Then again, I'm German, so our own movies aren't all that special to me...

Where in HK are you?
There's also Tattoo which came out recently. Sort of like Anatomy. Germans love their sick thriller movies.
Can't think of any that haven't been said already. But would like to say 'Wings of Desire' is one of my all time favourite movies, as is 'Aguilere: The Wrath of God'.
You could conceivably consider 'Lola Rennt' as a football movie, as the first monologue is all about football.
Nothing else in the movie is though. But a damn cool movie. And Franka Potente has great tits that bounce nicely when she runs (as she does a lot in the movie)

That really is a great film. Although the dodgy flashback scenes are rather shit.

try "Nirgendwo in Afrika" - Nowhere in Africa.
Great movie. About a German-Jewish family that has to emmigrate to Africa during the Nazi era.
"Der Schuh des Manitu" or "Manitus shoe" in english i suggest is a really good comedy. The most succesfull german movie i think (but dont know if the jokes were translated good)
Goodbye Lenin is quite cool, "Das Wunder von Bern" is okay.
But the real problem is, i dont know if many of the unknown movies were translated into english. There are dozens of good historical dramas and socialcritic movies, which wouldn´t be translated because they were only about german problems/history. I once saw a cool movie about Klaus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg. Stalingrad is also a good movie, and even an translated one ;)
Der Untergang should be translated. I havent seen it, but it is said to be an very good movie.
If you like old (i mean old, yes. Like about 50´s and 60´s) comedy, then try to find translations of "Die Feuerzangenbowle" oh and the movies of Heinz Rühmann. But, well, they´re old movies
If you like soccer, then go get some recordings of games ;) or even better - get your ass outside to kick! *lol*
Back to the movies. If "Traumschiff surprise, Periode 1" havent arrived you yet, then watch out for it. Its another comedy from Michael "bully" Herbig and his friends. They´re the ones who made Manitus shoe. Are there still any german movies left? Let me guess... oh, yes, the movies about the Hitler-Regime. "Hitlerjunge Samuel" about an jew, who survives because no one knows hes a jew and the nazis believe hes arian. Two movies are just now here in the cinemas, havent seen them but their names are: "Napola" and "Sophie Scholl". First is about an School for the childs of the more important nazis and the second is about one of the most popular fighter against Hitler. Actually only about her last days when she was captured by the Gestapo-guys. I guess thats it, dont know anymore
But, an tip. Try to find the differences between german war-movies and american war-movies, thats really interesting.
