Here is a thread devoted to appreciating our heritage:

I am French, Russian, Scottish, Irish, Spanish(Spain) and German.

There is a district in Scotland with the same name as my last name.
My family was one of many who settled a town in Wisconsin.
My grandparents X something were named Valentin and Valentino (lol).

The options on the poll were created after the thread was created. I tried to use some of the most popular responses from posters since I could not list everything. Some options I did not add were Indian, Asian, Swiss, Danish, Lithuanian, and Estonian.

I'm of Italian descent. My father came from Sicily, my mother from Calabria. I have roots in two great cultures, the Helenic, from my Sicilian roots, and the Roman, I guess from both places. Some of my distant relatives were from the group of people who invented democracy, The rest were from the people who invented the republic and spread the idea accross Europe, the Middle East, and Northern Africa.

Well okay, you asked for it:

Generally, the blood from my dad is English and Welsh (or Saxon/Norman/Viking and Celt) and that from my mom is German and English (bit more Saxon there, likely).

My dad's mom apparently is descended directly from King John I of England.

John I's parents were Henry II "Curtmantle" and Eleanor of Aquitaine. That "The Lion In Winter" thing on Showtime starring Jean-Luc Picard? Captain Picard was playing the part of Henry II.

Sheesh... going back from THEM you see people like Clovis, Charlemagne, William the Conqueror, Hugh Capet "The Great", Egbert (first king of unified England, apparently), Alfred the Great, the first kings of Scotland (or parts of Scotland... "Dalriada" or something like that), Matilda of Scotland, Hengest the Saxon, a whole line of viking kings (including Odin -- Woden), and Priam Podarces.

Not sure about Priam Podarces and Odin. lol

In the 90s, there was a huge trend for researching your family history. Now, many people are putting the finishing touches on their family trees. So this will allow you to be able to fine lines a lot easier without having to start from scratch and find connections on your own. I have done my family tree once before, but had computer problems and I lost my account on genealogy. So I suggest you copy all of your information into word. Now I am going to create it once again. I'd be glad to help you. Can I ask, do you have any idea where some of your ancestors may have come from?

I am Italian, Scottish, English and i think Irish.

My mom's side of the family is from Italy, mostly Casino. My grandpa immigrated to Ellis Island in the 50's then went to Canada. My aunt Antoinette went with him, she was going to marry my uncle Charlie, who already lived there. My mom, grandma, and uncle Sal came to Canada in 1962. My aunt Maria and her husband, my uncle Angelo, and their kids, came a few years later.

My dad's side is from England and Scotland and i think Ireland. My dad was born in Richmond, BC and my grandparents were also born in Canada. My grandma's mother, my great-grandma, was born in Stokesley, York, England. My grandma's father, my great-grandfather, was born in Leamington, Ontario. My great-great grandpa was born in Scotland, they think Paisley. My mom said that my grandpa's parents are from England and Ireland, but i don't know where they were born. My last name though does have English and Scottish origins, and for the first two years of my life i had red hair. The Irish could come in there...lol.

Perkeleenmaa
01-03-2005, 07:19
The poll is totally broken. Let's see.

French
German
Polish
Russian
Italian
African
Australian
English/Scottish/Irish
Arabic
Slavic (Bulgaria, Hungary)

First of all, Hungarian is NOT Slavic. Hungarian is the largest language in the Fenno-Ugric language family, one of the three originally European families: Basque, Fenno-Ugric with Finnish, Estonian, Hungarian, and Indo-European with the rest of European languages. Hungarians also identify themselves with a different culture than Slavic. Hungarians would be probably very insulted should you suggest it's a Slavic culture.

Problem two is that there are three Slavic entries (Russian, Polish and "Slavic"), while the Romance heritages are represented by two entries (French and Italian, no generic option). German and two options for English are given, but the Scandinavian heritage is ignored completely.

"African" is a good one, as the knowledge of the exact ancestry has been systematically taken away in America. "Arabic" is also less disputable.

A better one would be:
English, Scottish, Irish, other GB
Mediterranean (French, Italian, Spanish, Greek)
Germanic (Swiss, German, Dutch)
Scandavian (Swedish, Danish, Norwegian)
Slavic (Russian, Polish, Bulgarian)
African
Native American
Asian (sorry)
?
Other

This, of course, still produces a substantial "Other" input, but that should cover at least North American heritages. Arabic is ignored, because as yet no one has voted for it.

There's one option left. It could be Fennic (Finnish, Estonian), but this would exclude Hungarian; and it could be Fenno-Ugric, but this would make little sense with respect to cultures, as there is no such this as a "Fenno-Ugric culture". Only the languages are related. Can't know about Hungarian, but Finnish cannot be really classified "Nordic", as it'd immediately bring ideas about ABBA and other such Swedish = fairy things into mind.

Scandinavian and German could also be merged, as the distinction between the two isn't all that great. That would allow a better differentiation for the "Asian" option. I can't know how that should be divided up.

Any other ideas for a better poll? Posting it if it's good.

By the way, I'm most probably 100% Finnish. That is, with 1/4 Ingrian Finnish and possibly some Sami relatives. Couldn't be any more pure-bred white =)

I'm (at least) 4th generation living in Dresden, Germany (pure German heritage). Otherwise, my family is pretty normal middle class. But I'm happy to live in Germany, although I mostly don't like the politicial system. I am very proud of what our ancestors created, the long and rich history of Germany - despite its short dark time of national socialism. My old ancestors helped destroy the Roman Empire, Germany used to be a cultural and technological world power. We're on our way back to being one :D

The town I live in got its "town rights" in 1206. That's very old and we'll celebrate the 800th birthday of Dresden next year. I'm very proud of that aswell, although I didn't do much for it, I am happy to be part of it :)

I live in the U.S., and have ancestors that I know of from Germany, Scotland, England, the Netherlands, and Denmark. All my dad's ancestors are from Germany.

Almost my whole family on my mom's side were Mormon pioneers ... which makes it easy to research their family history. Her mom is adopted, though, so we have little idea who her ancestors were.

I have ancestors that I know of who served in the U.S. Army in the Civil War and World War 2 (my grandpa, who was born in Germany, was also in B-17s bombing Germany, where he still had cousins living, during that war), and in the German Army in World War 1.

It's not a question of if, it's a question of how.

Considering that our sample is an Internet population, the poll should discriminate those options for which it is unlikely that there are any voters, e.g. Arabic, and equally include disproportionately small groups such as Fennic, for which there are more voters. (See the thread "Virallisin suomalainen säie" and count, for example. Yet to see the Arabic thread...)

I'm 7/8 Norwegian and 1/8 Finnish. My family name is a Swedish name that my great-grandfather made up when he escaped from the Finnish Civil War (or something) in connection with that in 1917 or 1918. His original Finnish name is the name of some place in Finland, I think. I don't know very much about him, and I have never been to Finland - have lived in Norway all my life.

No Cajun option either. Oh, sure, people could argue that Cajuns are just a variation on French, but any Cajun would beg to differ. We're a mix of Arcadian French (the kind who were sick of trapping furs in Canada so they declared independence, put a gold star on the French flag and made it their own, adopted Ave Maria as their national anthem, and moved to the Louisiana bayous) and Opalousa Indian, yielding itself to one hell of a swamp culture, rich and distinct from any possible variety of French.

I speak Cajun, but no Frenchman would ever understand me no matter how slow I spoke to them.

However, I have no need of a Cajun option. I don't need no stinkin' poll to be proud.

Slavic (mainly).

I have some german relative (my fathers side) waaaaaaaaay back. So I discard that, because it's so far back that it probably doesn't matter (and for the fact that I couldn't care less). Uh.. some russian blood on my mothers side, also waaaay back so discard that one too...

Hmm,.. well, just 100% Serb then. Not a good mix, if you count in german, during WW2. Serbs with Jerry blood were hunted and executed in Serbia during WW2 so my family had to make sure that it wasn't revealed to the local partisans.

Something interesting?

Well... My father and I are the first ones in our family history who have not been in or experienced a war. My grandfather (fathers side) fought for both, yes both, the serb Cetniks (pronounciation: Chetnik) and Tito's partisans. After WW2 those who had fought for the Cetniks were mostly executed or sentenced to work in labour camps but my grandfather managed to aquire a partisan hat and convince them that he had fought for the partisans and not the Cetniks. He had planned to escape to the English/American/French lines after Berlin was captured (he participated in the attack with the Red Army) but no such chance occured so he had to return to Yugoslavia (serbia).

All my relatives (during the Ottoman occupation) have fought against the turks in some way.

Eh, not so interesting but hey.

Without seeking to offend, I totally agree. Regardless of what the naysayers, whiners, fearful, and lame say, America is still the best hope for the future of the world. If we are lazy, it's become a positive trait because we always look for a less strenuous way of getting things done, and almost always find it.

I suspect that one reason so many Europeans don't want to make the effort to understand America is that most of us are descended from the castoffs Europe didn't want ... the disinherited, the poor, those who had no "heritage." Personally ... I LOVE bein' a mutt! :D

My great grandmother on my dad's side was Irish. She met a British Army officer stationed there, who became my Great Grandfather, where my great grandfather was posted to British ruled India, to an area now known as part of Pakistan. This was where my grandmother was born from their relationship. She and her parents then moved to the UK.

My grandmother grew up, met my grandfather who was in the Army, married, before my Grandfather became an anti aircraft gunner in Coventry in WW2, then as part of REME, being sent to France. His brother was at El Alamein. I have the pictures he took of the carnage. Panzers, aircraft, dead Germans and dead British...

My great grandparents on my mum's side was Scottish, they moved to England, and had my other grandmother, who met an English man (my other grandfather) who went off to fight in Italy in WW2, and possibly N Africa?

My grandparents had my parents, born and raised in London, who had me!

So, I have Irish, Scottish and English bloodline, as well and heritage, as well as Pakistani heritage from my Nan being born there.

My Nan could be termed as British Asian, although she is white. That should rile the racist bastards out there.

Yep, we do it just to bother the Brits. Or more precisely, you. Did you get buggered by a bunch of Americans? Because you certainly seem to have something about Americans up your ass.

No, I just don't like the way the world's going, supporting Bush in the massacre of the war on Iraq originally reasoned to catch Osama Bin Ladin. Hmm where is he now? Yankees seem to have forgotten about him wouldn't ya say? Which is rather suspicious considering he was what prompted the war on Iraq in the first place - oh yeah...and he DID kill hundreds of American's and Brits and other various country's inhabitants on the 11th of September 2001 - has that been forgotten? It seems it. No, I have nothing against Americans, it's their country I have something against, and everything it seems to stand for - 'freedom' my arse, America stands for one thing...Itself. :headbang:

I really don't know mine

I am told by my mom that I am german/english/irish but she couldn't tell me why and gave me the sense that it really doesn't matter. Therefore I never really felt that it did.

Should I care?

Ach! I be Irish! Very Irish and I'm DAMN proud of it!
Yes, I noticed the problem when I was there. It suddenly dawned on me then where the Americans must have gotten their arrogance from.

I'm about 80% Irish, 16% Scottish, 3% German, and 1% French.

I've got a sturdy, mesomorphic build, extremely thick, blonde hair, am pretty tall (although not quite to manchild proportions), and I love to argue with people... Well, when they're being assholes, anyway. I fiery debate with two or more people is always good fun.

And I really like Potatoes. Potato Soup, French Fries, Tots, Potatoes Au Gratin, you name it. If it has potatoes in it, I'll eat it.

Dad's side, I'm part Scotch-Irish, part French Hugenot. Mom's side, I'm part Nigerian, part Cherokee.

In reality I look like a North African. Except that my hair has greek curls in it and I'm graying like a mofo.

Needless to say, I don't go for many airplane rides these days (even when I want to ;) )

I'm English, Welsh, Irish, Scottish, French, Haitian, Chinese, and Native American. Those are the ones we know about.

I'm American, or currently, a laowai in China. Laowai overrides all of that stuff.

It's all good.
