Shining force 2. Now that was an RPG. Best characters were... Chester the centaur, Jaha the Dwarf, and Baron Lemon.

I spent months and months playing and replaying that game. It just rules. Every single aspect of it rules.

http://www.defense-update.com/products/r/rpg.htm

RPG-7 is a reloadable, shoulder-fired, muzzle-loaded, recoilless antitank and antipersonnel rocket propelled grenade launcher that launches fin-stabilized, oversized rocket - assisted HEAT grenade (85-mm in the PG-7 version, 70-mm in the PG-7M) from a smooth bore 40mm tube. The launcher with optical sights weighs 6.9 kilograms (15.9 pounds) and has a maximum, effective range of 300 meters against moving point targets and 500 meters against stationary point targets. 500 meters is also the maximum range of rocket assisted flight, which enables a flatter trajectory and more accurate aiming. The RPG-7V is light enough to be carried and fired by a single operator. An assistant grenadier deploys with the shooter, to the left of the gunner to provide cover with his personal weapon and reload after fire.

Oh. This is about PLATFORM RPGs, I see. Well, I'll take my D&D books and go be creative somewhere else.I was going to suggest Space: 1889 or B5 or $FavouriteGenreIn GURPS or even the old Star Wars system, but with the caveat that you need a good GM/DM/Rolemaster/whatever, who can do justice to the setting and the system.

I've never found a particularly good computer/console-based RPG. Perhaps because I'm geeky and can see the limited programming shine through, whereas human controllers (indeed humans in general) tend to pleasantly surprise me with their repartee, inventiveness and adaptability... (Not a put-down, just an limited observation.)

Splendid, then. I run D&D games quite frequency, on the 3.5 rules set. I've never been able to play much in the way of computer-game rpgs, since I generally prefer a social aspect to gaming. Also, sunlight.

well, you obviously didn't play Knights of the Old Republic, otherwise you would have added it as an option. It's probably the best I've ever played. Not to mention, it's received countless "game of the year" awards and thousands upon thousands of players and critics also hail as the best RPG ever. I'm very confused why it's not listed in your poll.

KOTOR is a great game... but it was a little narrow for my liking. It was semi-non-linear, but most of the time your choices only really affected the lightside/darkside points, which in themselves only really blatantly affected how easily you could use the corresponding force powers. There was only really one part of the game that altered the ending, and that was the final lightside/darkside choice. I managed to complete the entire game, including every quest, I believe, in 40 hours. It's great whilst it lasts, but it lacks replayability, in my opinion.

I play a good amount of Dungeon Siege, but I never classified it as an RPG because the only role you really play is "guy who smashes things to itty bitty bits". Still a lot of fun though.

GTA san andreas totally fits the bill. and is my favorite.Interesting choice. A lot of people who liked the pre-SA GTA series fell out with GTA:SA for the very reason that it went into RPG-mode. Haven't played it myself (not a PS2 fan, so must wait till June to decide to get it) but I must say that what attracts me to the series was originally the chaos, map scope and (later, with GTA3/Liberty City onwards) the whole 3D rendering of the environment.

I don't know if I'll get a kick out of the strict RPG elements (girlfriends and the like) or will take on the missions merely as 'means to an end' in order to get full reign of the environment so I can do those things (base jumping, impromptu drive-bys, messing with the cops, blowing things up, finding interesting corners of the maps and driving/riding/flying/sailing various things through/over/into various other things. All without aim, all mindless, all good fun with a minimum emphasis on role-playing... :)

And using the (limited, but at least present, and possibly moddable) two-player mode to allow a 'fragfest' sort of thing might be interesting. I've not yet messed with the GTA3/VC multiplayer mod, but I think I'd prefer explosive duelling with someone (Brown Thunder vs Brown Thunder :D) or having a sniping competition (:sniper: :sniper: <= winner!) than having to rely on the basic 'mission-flow' element for my RPG-kicks... You can even introduce RPGing into the multiplayer perspective, like "You have to get to point A, across town, someone (i.e. me, with the radar turned off) will be trying to find you..." perhaps?

Sorry, waffling.

No RPGs in the poll, just a bunch of computer adventure games. Post some real RPGs and I'll give an opinion.

(They're called Role Playing Games for a reason. Guiding a fixed persona through a fixed adventure is not playing a role.)

I vote for either the Elderscrolls-Series or the Gothic-Series. But also "Planescape: Torment" and the Baldur's-Gate-Series and "Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magic Obscura" are great RPGs which i had to mention.

I also disagree with the founder of the thread on his choice of RPGs. First, they are Eastern (so I think) and second for me those aren't RPGs at all.

The D20 system. Well, it's the dominant RPG in the market.

More specific? Fine... D&D. It's the one who launched them all. T&T was good, but not as much as D&D. And the one who said shadowrun: Why? The d6 system they use is moronic and clunkiy at best. Yes the setting is fun, but the system is crap.

Yeah, Fallout wins.

But the problem with computer games is that first, you don't really assume any kind of role. You kill stuff, you level up, you kill bigger stuff. No real variation. I mean you get to pick what weapon you use for teh killing, but is that a role? So many games force your character choice and make you play the game through with them. Consider the old SNES Shadowrun. Second, because all the options are pre-set, there isn't really that much choice. Fallout's pretty damned open, but there still aren't that many real decisions.

Knights of the Old Republic (and II) is the worst at this. It presents the illusion of an open world, but it only really offers a very long series of good/evil binary choices. You never really do anything inventive. You kill the guy or you help the guy.

I guess the MMORPGs might have the cure for this, but they need to overcome the Diablo II-type grind first. You need to have a larger economy than kill-loot-sell. There need to be bigger goals and reasons for players to hire other players.

I have liked Wasteland, Fallout for their fun factor. And loved them. Even Shining Force 2 on the Genesis held me in thrall, as did Chrono Trigger. As well, I must mention one of KOEI's last games, New Horizons (sailing and looking for Atlantis, which until today I haven't found:P) and then Pirates! Gold just for being one of those RPG types nobody can replicate. King of Dragon Pass was my most recent favourite RPG.

Again all the top for fun and original factors. Mould-breaking, etc. But they are seated all at the same table, looking up to the throne on which sits...

... Nethack!

To me, no one game embodies RPG more than Nethack does. Of course I say this maybe because no other game has eaten more of my life than this single game. Easy to pick up again every few months, always the extra gem you never knew about or thing you never knew you could do. Just as long as you don't cheat or even try to find out about it, this game will be the most serious fun you can ever have. Talk about series, what other game has lasted as long as this one?

If you want an RPG with real choice, play "Arcanum". It has the best story of any RPG I have ever played (I have played a lot, I can assure you) and it was the only RPG in which you reall could make moral and philosophical choices. Even the whole story turned about morales and philosophy. Is prophecy and religion true? What good is our life? Are all men (and all things that look like men, but aren't really, like dwarves and orcs) equal? What are the consequences of technological advance? etc. etc.

It's acctually one of the games you really have to think about. You can think about it even afterwards, for it can stire quite interesting philosophical debates.

Everyone's so narrow minded about their definition of a role-playing game. If you ask me, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the best RPG ever, though most RPG fans will denounce this, and call it an adventure game. There are many qualities that make an RPG, why do you think everyone has their console (linear) vs. PC (open-ended) battles?

Out of traditional RPG's though, I would have to say Baldur's Gate series is the best. Those are my favorite games ever, Ocarina and the BG series.

Also, my most recent RPG is Vampires: The Masquerade- Bloodlines, and despite many crippling flaws, this game is really good, and reminds me of the classic Fallout games.

Umm...None of those. Also, Rifts would fall under the Palladium system.

As far as the old World of Darkness goes, Mage was way more fun than Vampire...So was Hunter: The Reckoning.

Exalted was better then both of those, despite not being part of the WoD.

Shadowrun wasa helluva lot of fun, but it wasn't cyberpunk. Best cyberpunk game is good ol' Cyberpunk 2020.

Transhuman Space is also awesome. So is kill puppies for satan.

The Altnerity system is good too, despite being out of print. Best incarnation of the D20 system ever, period.

For more recent stuff, Weapons of the Gods looks awesome. I've heard good things about Tekumel, too.

Of the choices, I go with Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Chrono Trigger as my favorite platform RPGs (no particular order). Ogre Battle- both March of the Black Queen and Person of Lordly Caliber- gets an honorable mention.

For best RPGs... well, I tend to lean more towards CRPGs with lots of freedom of choice. Linearity just isn't my bag. If you notice, of the choices I picked, FFT and the OB series are more strategy games, which I like. FF6 and CT just have such awesome stories and characters that I couldn't slight them. I have to go with the poster above who selected the Fallout series (ONLY the RPGs, mind you, not the spawned-off garbage like FOT and FO:BOS, although FOT was at least an okay game). Nonlinearity, a completely awesome atmosphere, excellent writing... I could go on and on about these games. Wasteland and Arcanum get honorable mentions. I can't find myself as fond of Wasteland as of Fallout, though, simply because I'm younger and didn't play it (on an emulator, of course) until long after I had discovered the joys of Fallout. As for Arcanum, great story, great nonlinearity, but the combat system, was, well, not so good. Fallout's strictly turn-based system worked a hell of a lot better.

So ends my rant.

What about the Suikodens? (Specifically 1 & 2, although 4 was better than 3)

Suikodens? They were fun, clever at times, and had interesting battle systems...but the Best of all time? C'mon. The first half of 3 was amazingly good, but after the lead designer quit half-way through production it just died, you lost all sense of what was going on. Did you eve beat three, did you see the insanity that was the end of the game?!

I swear to god this was the end, "Oh no! This open courtyard is collapsing! Quick, let us all run into this enourmous ancient cave complex for safety!"

...Morons, every last one of them morons. ;)

Oh yeah, Chrono Trigger was my vote. Any game that's design by the Squaresoft AND Enix elite teams is gonna be good. Chrono Trigger was the pinnicle of RPG gaming. Every game in the Final Fantasy series has weak spots, where the game play just isn't that much fun for a few hours...not so with Chrono Trigger. It was a wild ride all the way through, with a healthy dose of ass-kicking, emotion, and a wonderful philosophy that tied it all together.

oohh we like Torment. Also like the other black isle games - baldur's gate (all of them, though soa was the best imo) and icewind dale. kotor was fantastic, as was legend of dragoon.

i like the first of the elder scrolls series. there's morrowwind out now, before that was daggerfall, and before THAT was arena. it won't play on today's comps though, it's designed for much older systems.

phantasmagoria, though sickeningly linear, was a fun story. if you like... gruesome.

edit: EQ was good, about 2 years ago. now it's gotten to be an ubergrind instead of a RP ... and the people on the RP specific server are even in that 'i wanna be buffz0rz' frame of mind nowadays. SWG is better for rping, but is more a boring nosetothegrindstone type of work - and crafting is basically running your own home business, but not for 'real'. it's still buggy too, they won't fix the broken stuff cuz the uberlewtwhores are screaming about whatever they want instead of keeping it good. i had my hopes up for WoW because diablo kicked so much ass, but it looks like it'll not sweep the market like i expected... just sort of another MMO really. i have faith in blizzard though! they'll get it worked out eventually :P
