At the risk of sounding ignorant, I do not know any details about the Nanjing Massacre besides the location and commonly-accepted death-toll.

As for the Jewish Holocaust, definately.

I hope this is not for a class. If it is, please, please, please choose a more reliable method. (I almost failed a class for a less stupid stunt.)
And if it's not for a class, what is it for.

Please andswer, YES, or NO to the following.

Have you heard about the Nanjing Massacre, or read about the Rape of Nanjing?

And, Have you heard of the Jewish Holocaust?

Thank you. I will post results by the end of the week.

I'll answer (probably to your pleasure) when you clarify the above.

Thanks. :)

"Yes" to both. The "Rape of Nanking" ( old spelling ), was at least on a par with the Holocaust in terms of sheer numbers, with the Japanese slaughtering tens of thousands of men, women and children.

Yes and yes.

Nanjing is the pinyin anglicization, accepted as official by the PRC, while Nanking is from an older anglicization method (Wade-Giles, I believe). I think most maps (National Geographic, at least) use Nanjing.

Its along the same lines as the Beijing-Peking translation difference. The pinyin is a much better approximation of the Mandarin pronunciation, but there are innumerable local dialects which vary quite widely, and sometimes mutually-unintelligible ways.

To clarify the spelling of Nanjing/Nanking

Nanking is spelling it phonetically (in English).
Just like the German word "Führer" can be spelled "Fuehrer" in English, or the German name "Höss" can be spelled "Hoess" in English.
IMO, I hate when people translate words like that. Especially when the German name Wilhelm is translated to William. Some encyclopedias do this and it can be confusing as hell when trying to understand history, because King Wilhelm I (of Germany) is not the same person as King William I (of Britain).

I hope this helps.

the Rape of Nanking (as it was known in the West) occured when the Japanese Army, after a fierce and costly campaign, fought their way to the then Chinese Nationalist capital after battles around Peking and Shanghai (using Western names to be consistant). By the time the Japanese finely shattered the defending Chinese Army, the Japanese Army had suffered rather serious casualties. The Chinese Nationalist government and remnants of army forces retreated from the city and the Japanese Army moved in.

Over the next few days the Japanese soldiers essentially behaved like savages. The Japanese officer corps failed to control their troops, or urged them on, and an unknown number, but estimated to be well over 100,000 Chinese women of all ages (from toddlers to the elderly) were raped and many of these women were killed. A similiar number of Chinese men and boys of all ages were killed, usually by rifle shot, bayonet, sword or pistol but frequently in more barbaric fashion (gasoline for example).

The German Ambassador (who as it happens was a Nazi) was so appalled he filed a protest (and incidently saved several thousand women and children in the grounds of his embassy). The Japanese Army was so out of control that it sank a US Navy gunboat shortly after, and also bombed (but missed) a British Gunboat, nearly triggering war in 1937.

This pattern of Japanese Army behavior was to continue until the final Japanese defeat. Estimates but the total number of Chinese dead at well over 20 million, possibly as high as 30 million. A standard Japanese tactic once they were no longer able to continue the advance was to make short advances to conquer an area, and then carry out a tactic called "Kill All, Burn All" and essentially kill everyone in that area, strip it of everything of value, and burn what they couldn't cart off.

The Japanese government has never apologized to China and Japanese textbooks have been criticized for glossing over Japanese behavior in China. The Japanese government also conducted biological warfare experiments on captive Chinese (along with other nationalities as well but in token numbers in comparision) including dropping Bubonic plague invested fleas on a couple of small Chinese cities (it didn't work very well but the intention is certainly clear enough).

The German policy known as the Final Solution began as early as the invasion of Poland. Jews, Polish intellectuals and leaders and Communists were rounded up and some were killed immediately. Most ended up in Ghettos as the Nazis were still figuring out what to do. Later on, during the invasion of the Soviet Union, special murder units followed behind the advancing German Army and killed nearly 2 million Jews, and and unknown (to me but somebody knows) number of Communist Party officials and others. In 1942, the officials of the Nazi Party met in secret and came up with a deliberate policy of deportation and execution in camps. All European Jews and Gypsies were targeted, as well as Communists, Homosexuals, and a number of other political and religious groups. In all, 11 million were deliberately executed as a matter of policy, not counting several million Soviet POWs and slave laborers deliberately or simply callously worked to death.

In both China and in Europe, government agencies made deliberate decisions to murder tens of millions of people. The Nazi Government ordered its apparatus to conduct this activity, while the Japanese Government allowed its Army to do as it wished. The German government postwar has apologized to practically everyone. The Japanese government has not done so and apparently hopes that the world will forget so that it can avoid the shame of having to apologize.

Yeah, the Rape of Nanking was the equivalent of, oh, at least ten or twelve days of the fifteen-million-victim Holocaust. Of course it was in the Orient, where troops have always acted like this, so it didn't attract much attention from anyone but the victims and the Western press.

What about it?

I always heard of it as the Nanking massacre, but I have heard of it. I didn't know anything except that it was a massacre of the Chinese by the Japanese Army, but thanks to New Shiron I now know much more.

I had heard of the Holocaust as well.

To clarify this, no, it is not homework or anything related to school work. I am doing this so that I can use it as a regular statistic. I have surveyed about close to 80 persons. I was going to stop at 50, but a lot more replies came in than expected with emails and messages from forums pouring in. So I have planned to call it a stop by Friday or the weekends.

Nanjing is the 'Current' romanization of Nanking. It is called Pingyin and is adopted by foreign countries.

Nanking was the former romanization system called the Wade-Giles System. it is still in use in Taiwan only. So, the current, Beijing, would be called, Peking using the Wade-Giles system.

CURRENT RESULTS WITH THE ABOVE ^ REPLIES ADDED
Hey, I am doing a survey, Have you heard of the the Rape of Nanjing, or the Nanking Massacre?
Yes = IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
No = IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Have you heard of the Jewish Holocaust?
Yes = IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
No = IIIIIIIIIII

Each tally,( I ) represents one person's answer. The results will change because I have only begun taking in answers at my school, and the emails are still piling up. The survey is to determine the overall numbers of people who know about these horrible events and also, I am trying to raise awareness of the horrible six week holocaust in Nanjing(Nanking) and the horrible actions of the Japanese Imperial Army in Asia which is being forgotten as you can tell from the results so far.

THANK YOU for all who have contributed.

For more information on the Nanjing Massacre, please visit:
http://www.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/NanjingMassacre/NM.html

The Nanjing Massacre was about =
In December 1937, Nanjing fell to the Japanese Imperial Army. The Japanese army launched a massacre for six weeks. According to the records of several welfare organizations which buried the dead bodies after the Massacre, around three hundred thousand people, mostly civilians and POWs, were brutally slaughtered.

Over twenty thousand cases of rape were reported. Many of the victims were gang raped and then killed. The figure did not include those captives who were sent to army brothels (the so-called "comfort stations").

I AM STILL TAKING IN RESULTS. Thank you. I trust everyone will be honest in answering, sorry, this forum's not that easy for me to use, I only rp, and rarely do polls. Sorry about that. You can teach other people here, but I trust they will answer no to not knowing either choice before saying yes, only after learning it here. I would apprciate it, thanks again.

Yes, i have heard of both, though i know much more about The Holocaust then i do the Rape of Nanking. My grandpa and his brothers were in concentration camps, so the Holocaust has always held a fascination, if you can call it that, for me.

I found out the author of The Rape of Nanking died when i read the People and Time year end almanacs.
