Looking Intelligent

Atheistic Might
28-02-2005, 03:49
Here are some rules for appearing intelligent online I came up with:

1. How smart you appear is inversely proportional to how many exclaimation marks you use. The fewer, the better.

2. Try to avoid common grammatical errors--their/they're/there, and so on. You appear far smarter if your grammar is close to correct, but just strange enough that no one will dare question your English skills.

3. Sadly, all caps was scientifically proven to be worthless at hiding a lack of content.

4. Believe it or not, words are not spelled with numbers.

Does anyone have anything to add?

One might end a sentence with an ellipsis to denote trailing off dialogue or a thought which is either very obvious or obvious and offensive.

But placing a period (denoting end of sentence) at the end of an ellipsis (unfinished thought) would defeat the purpose of an ellipsis, wouldn't it?

The ellipsis is most often used in the middle of a sentence to show that some of the words have been left out.

When it is at the end of the sentence, the final period is added.

I too am an abuser of the ellipses.......I use length to imply longer 'ackward silences'.

Editors stop reading now: In scripts I'll do this-..., which drives editors nuts, including initially my collaborator. But actors know what I mean, so I keep doing it.

If one is endeavoring to appear perspicacious, it would be a surpassingly excellent intellection to eschew obfuscating dialogue as it does lead to an outstanding impression that the orator oftentimes engages in auto-eroticism.

The certitude that engaging in an exhibition of exorbitant verbosity will prevail to one favourably subjugating those that express a disparate conjecture is counterfactual.

All depends what the person is saying as to how I take grammer into account. A simple grammatical error isn't going to make me think they're not smart. Maybe grammer just isn't their thing. And I'd never ridicule someone for their grammer or punctuation.

It may not be commonly known, but long ago, people decided on what the acceptable spelling for words would be. They also created a powerful tool: the dictionary. Sadly, the ignorant masses wished to stay that way, and fiercely avoided this book. Centuries later, the people created computers that had a word processing program with a "spellcheck." There are few words that cannot be run through spellcheck to verify their correctness. Thus, there is no excuse to write (sp?) next to a word. Unless, of course, Clippy frightened you so much that you can never use Word again.
