Personified God?

This is something that's always bothered me. What do people think of when they think of God? A "big guy in the sky", or something else?

My own personal views on this matter are that God is far from a "big guy in the sky". Some people would probably call me a Deist for saying so, but I find my belief in a non-personified God compatible with my religion.

I think God is embarassed when I picture him in lacy undergarments.

No, God wouldn't be embarassed. God has all perfections, and therefore has the perfect Rack.

But can God wear lacy undergarments? Or does He/She/It have a Rack at all? ;)

God does not look good in the wrong size shoes!

This is the Anthropomorphic argument. It separates some religions, notably Hinduism; In which there are the personalists, mainly those who worship Vishnu/Krishna, and the inpersonalists, mainly those who worship Shiva. Though in both sects either one deity can be anthropomorphized or not.

It really depends on who you talk to. I think Spinoza would agree that God can wear undergarments. Seeing as there is only one substance, and that one substance has all properties, including extension, that substance could wear lacy undergarments.

Ha! I laugh at your poll.
I have many gods, all look quite human.
Many goddess too (Some quite hot).

If God could do anything that is logically possible (for we assume that he can't do the logically impossible, such as make an object which he is unable to lift) then could he become a person?

I hope I understood the poll properly. I voted Unbeleiver, because I'm atheist. I voted personified human-like being because I think most theists see god this way.

Charleton Heston with a big white beard. Either that or a giant polygonal face that says, "Your Head Asplode!" before casting me into a badly animated lake of fire.

No they don't!

If theists did see God as a human-like being, then why on earth would they want to worship him??

Well, the limited results of this poll would seem to prove you wrong. For which I am thankful - sometimes I get the feeling everybody has a skewed view of God.

Agnostic/Catholic - I tend to think of him as Michaelangelo portrayed him on the roof of the Sistine Chapel. The holy spririt's there for being a vague force, people!:P

I've seen the Sistine Chapel - believe me, if God's a big white dude in the sky, then how come lightning bolts aren't being thrown around every five minutes burning down unbelievers?

Think of it as a vague force within another vague force.

Both A and B. I think God has both aspects, but isn't limited to either. He is the creator and ruler of all that is in Whom "we live and move and have our being" Whose power and might and holiness are infinite while at the same time being our Father who loves us and is aquainted with our every tear and joy and trial and success and knows the number of hairs on our heads. He is both awesome and transcendent and personal and relational at the same time.

I meant as a personality, rather than a force without emotions or thought.

That's probably pretty close to what I believe, actually... but He's still not a big white guy sitting on a cloud! :D

Seems to me that imagining God as a human doesn't prevent you from worshipping Him as being greater than human. The nature of God without doubt surpasses all our comprehensions so, for me at least, anthropomorphizing Him seems to be the most sensible of way of dealing with the issue, as all interpretations are going to fall vastly short of the mark.

Non-believer. Don't picture god in any sense, so none of the options really fit.

Though He could be if He so chose, the sitting on the cloud part in particular, though I am thoroughly convinced there is more to heaven than that. We do know that Christ is half Jewish though.
