The giant coffee conspiracy

Super-power
27-02-2005, 18:51
The big evil corporations have been getting coffee on the cheap from South America, selling it in places including the US.

The majority of Americans drink coffee every morning, and depend on it to wake up. This is where the coffee corporations begin their exploitation.

Once enough Americans are under the coffee yoke, they will either a) pull a major price gouge, or b) pull the coffee off of store shells. Deprived of their fuel source, the American people will watch in groggy semi-consciousness as their precious country is invaded by the evil corporate armies.

Coffee is the primary source for caffeine, which most Americans are addicted to and won't admit for the same reason most alcoholics don't admit it. Meanwhile, caffeine, which stimulates the HEART, contributes to the leading cause of death, HEART disease.

Not much of a conspiracy, just people slowly killing themselves. The trendy way.

All I know about this is that all the good coffee gets exported leaving us with crap.
Stop this evil plot please, and let us in South America have some decent coffee.

If you want to be free, you should try limiting yourself (to your maximum normal amount) per week, and then one or two weeks later making the limit smaller, one or two weeks later smaller than that etc until you don't need any coffee and you aren't aware of it anymore.

That usually works.

I dont know about the second part of your idea, but that 'big price gouge' is called "starbucks coffee."

Well, it's that way all over the world. At 231g per capita annualy, the Finns consume the most caffeine, coming overwhelmingly from coffee.

It's Starbucks that must be destroyed. They're trying to take over. Heck, there are three within a half-mile radius of my house. An-and *shudders* I was walking throuhg Boston, and I walked by a Starbucks...and across the street one block down was a-a-an-another Starbucks!

Yeah and in the early 90's Sweden consumed the most. I think they're in second place now.

They've only just started on you. When I come out of the station of a morning there's a Starbucks opposite. Fifty yards down the road, another; opposite that, one more. Another hundred yards or so, another. Round the corner, two more.

I wouldn't mind so much if they would. Just. Serve. Decent. Coffee!
(Is that so much to ask of a coffee house?)

To answer Anarchic Conceptions' question, they make money through soulless marketing whores who buy coffee there because their cups say Starbucks on the side and they want to look "cool". That, and people who go there because Starbucks basically ate everything else that produces coffee. Someone else denounced the coffee industry before Super-power. They make money by charging outrageous prices and they’re in league with Borders, the bookstore giant. Starbucks is like the Nike of coffee.

Don't forget that there also is a starbucks in every street so that competeing coffee retailers cannot get a foot in the market, and thus cannot compete leaving satbucks free to charge £3.00 for a Latte - its milk and some beans for christs sake!!

I guess people who are addicted. Plus they have to market to a certain group of consumers. I mean have you seen the people who go there? I would say most of them are younger, probably 20-30 years, and they are middle to upper middle class. Starbucks has an image, and that's what they sell.

They exist. It's scary, but they exist. I've met some.

They tend to be young and ask what you did at 'Uni', which makes me want to hit them. But really they're quite nice, it's just that there's something .... I dunno ..... missing. :(

Well I'm young, and tend ask what subject people do (but in my defense, I'm at uni so asking what people do is a good way to start conversation. Although come to think about it, I rarely talk to people older then me  )

It's actually the word 'uni' I have a problem with. It was put into common currency by yuppies and Oxbridge wannabes in the 80's, and it just bugs me. Meh.

This implies that you often go into Starbucks. May I ask why?
(Like mars bars, there are no Starbucks in Brazil that I know of.)

Or it implies I talk to people who do.

Though I admit I have been in them where there is no alternative supply of infused caffein, such as when I've been in America.

(No Starbucks in Brazil = natural order of how things should be. Though no good coffee in Brazil? That sucks. I've heard the same thing pertains in citrus fruit in South Africa. Capitalism, eh? )
