What movies make you cry?

I'm always upset after Edward gets chased to his castle in Edward Scissorhands. Now not so upset I'd CRY, but still...

Also, I always curl up into a little ball and sniffle when Basil goes off the edge of the Big Ben tower. (Bonus points for those who know what I just refered to.)

The Great Mouse Detective

...and the movies that make me cry the most;

Legends of the Fall
A River Runs Through It
Life is Beautiful
Shindlers List
The Last of the Mohicans
Field of Dreams

... there are too many!! Ok, two last ones...

The Fox and the Hound

Last, but certainly far from least...

a recording of the Vancouver Canadians playing baseball, that was aired on CTV a very long time ago - you can see me and my little brother watching the game in the crowd, and it's the only live footage I have of him.

I cried when I saw The Terminal. The main character was so sweet and intelligent. The fact that he was such a good person and he couldn't come to the US was sad to me. When watching movies, I tend to cry over people's strong will versus more sad things. He kept trying no matter what, he is a great example of perseverance.

Now and Then is a sad movie, and Of Mice and Men is such a sad book. I haven't seen the movie though. I also think The Lion King is a sad movie, too. The part where Mufasa died is sooo sad. I was only 5 when I saw it. I cried then and I still cry now whenever I see that part.

Odly enough, the only ever movie that's ever made me cry was "Mrs. Doubtfire". Of course I had only slept a few hours the night before and had spent the day in airports and on planes, so I was emotionally drained .

I should rewatch that movie sometime and see if I still like it in a normal state of mind.

I Am Sam made me howl, probably something to do with the "father" issues I've got.

And the winner of the category "Movies that made me feel stupid because I watched it and cried at the end even though it was a kids movie" goes to...

Small Soldiers

The bulk of the movie did not even vaguely trigger any emotions, in fact if it had ended after they discovered all the Gorgonites under the satellite dish I wouldn't have thought any more of it. However, the scene right at the end of the movie with the Gorgonites sailing off down the river... that hit me like a sack filled with doorknobs.

Not sure why... probably some deep issues in there somewhere that I need to address.

I always said I never cry at movies, but at the end of the series 'Band of Brothers', I had to blink real quick for a few minutes. Nothing to do with patriotism or anything like that. I just really got into the film and could not believe how hard them guys had it. What set me off was I didn't know that those old guys who would talk at the start and end of the episodes were the actual people who went through all that crap on the film and stayed committed to each other.

Heh... and The Wedding Singer just makes me real happy. I watched it four times one weekend on TBS.

And the new Star Wars flicks make me cry because they suck so much.

I'm glad to see someone else here has taste. That's the saddest movie I've ever seen. I had to put up with my g/f sitting through the last hour of that movie in absolute tears. Which didn't help me from not shedding a tear or two myself, which I was trying hard not to.
THere are so many brilliant scenes in that movie.
The song on the train tracks is one of the best bits of cinematography I've ever seen. Apparently he used over 60 cameras and took 100 hours of film for that one scene. The song is very poignant as well.
Likewise the murder scene, which is pretty horrific and his 'ressurrection' to forgive her was just superb.

Breaking the Waves is another good one by Lars Von Trier for getting the sniffles.

As for the Titanic, I laughed when DiCrapio floated down. It was so melodramatic it was hilarious. Americans can't do sad movies. They're too ham-fisted and tend to lay it on too thick, especially with the music. A sad scene should be able to hold it's own without having to resort to music to tell the audience what they should be feeling.

I have a copy of that movie. The really emotional part is after the credits, when they dedicate it to Phil Hartman. I miss that guy.

For movies to cry at?

Gladiator. Too damned heroic. And heroism is the thing that makes me emotional.
Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. The ending to that movie is such a welling up of heroism and powerful music that I am powerless against it.
The Transformers Movie. The Death of Optimus Prime is the most devastating moment I can recall from my childhood.

Saving Private Ryan, at the end. With the captain on the bridge, all his his squad dead and him just dying on the spot. Takes out his pistol and just keeps firing....

*chokes*

..scuse me... :(

Yeah. When I first saw Saving Private Ryan, it affected me too. Especially when I think of Melish, Carpuzo, the medic, Jackson, and Captain Miller.

When the SS Soldier and Mellish are fighting in the room trying to take control of the knife, and Upham is at the bottom of the stairs, too scared to move, and then the German finally comes on top, putting the knife into Mellish, and Mellish is pleading for him to stop, and The German says "Give in, make it easier for the both of us, it will be all over soon...shhh...shhhh"

And Mellish is stabbed through the heart.

It made me emotional when I saw this film, I did not cry, but it got to me.

Another one was the original Watership Down. I owned rabbits at the time, the scene where 'Bright eyes' is played at the end, and when the rabbit dies at the end. It affected me because the first rabbit I ever owned, died not long before.

The Killing Fields
I haven't seen that movie, mostly because every single time I hear its name it makes me think of the song "Killing Fields" by Funker Vogt.

"You must plan and you must train,
for the battle you don't want
To defend what you love
That's how the war begins

Peace is impossible,
no matter what it seems.
Someone's killing someone
Even in your dreams

You can't give them a reason
You can't tell them the truth
They are so convinced
To know what to do

People are not very wise
Don't know their limitations
Don't know what deathh means
When they play their dirty game

CHORUS:
So when you walk away,
leaving the killing fields,
you will be soon aware
what you have lost.

Don't give them a reason
and her screams are getting louder"

Now that I think of it, much of that song reminds me of trying to debate people.

Crying is not just for babies. If you have seen "The Notebook" and have a grandma who doesn't remember you any more because she has Altzheimers, it will affect you. What was the worst for me was the fact that the lady in the movie had some time when she remembered her life, while all my grandma can remember is that she is supposed to love me, but she doesn't remember why. I also cried at the end of "The Little Mermaid" during the big operatic send-off the first time I saw it. I was 26 at the time. :(

And the end of "The Wedding Singer" makes me cry when Adam Sandler comes out of first class on the airplane to sing that song about growing old together to Drew Barrymore in coach. I cry every time. Shouldn't there be a gate or something stronger than a curtain between the sections? (Just kidding! :) I think Elaine on "Seinfeld" said something like that first.)

Edit: Yeah, "Schindler's List" makes me cry too, just because of man's inhumanity to man. And that little girl in the pink coat against the washed out background is an extremely powerful image that also makes me weep openly and bitterly.

"Blazing Saddles" and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", you'll laugh so hard you'll cry

or you can just default "Old Yeller" or "Where the red fern grows"
