Although I love the little spaniel/golden-retriever mix dog I "inherited" from my younger son, I have to confess that the one animal in my entire life I have loved the most is the Himalayan cat my ex gave me when I was recovering from my military parachuting accident ...

Someone had evidently mistreated this lil guy and it took me awhile to gain his trust. I will always remember the first time he tentatively climbed up onto my computer desk and then onto my lap as I sat in my wheelchair. We have been best friends ever since.
Got an animal friend you'd like to tell us stories about?

My favorite was Pandora, a cat I had for 18 years. She would hunt almost anything. She brought home rabbits bigger than she was. She always, without fail, knew which dogs she could bully and which to beware. It didn't matter what size they were. I saw her bully dobermans and pit bulls. She knew exactly how to steal my husbands pillow. She outsmarted everything she couldn't outfight. I miss her, but wasn't terribly upset when she died. She lived a long full life and was never sick until the day before she died.

Sounds like a great lil friend to you. I have to admit that it's going to hurt me deeply when my lil Skuttles dies. ( My younger grandaughter named him! ) :)
Anyone know how long cats normally live?

Well, it depends...
20 years ago cats' life expectancy was 4-6 years, but today they can live for over 15 years.

My first cat (Lester) lived for 16 years, he was the best. At the moment I have another cat (more accurately my dad has another cat) called Magnus who treats me with indefference.

It never ceases to amaze me how attached I can get to a lil animal.

Awwwww! A cute littl' kittie! I love cats, they are so cute and cuddly! I love my cat so much, she is a lil lady cat and is quite small. Shes called Sylvie, shes about 4 at the moment so shes still quite young. We had a cat who was called Tiddles, she lived for 18 years but she died about 10 years ago. Though at the moment this big fat mean Tom Cat keeps coming into our house, spraying and eating our cats food! Our little kittie is being terrorised, so whenever I see this cat I hiss at it, throw water at it and chase it away. It hasn't come back for a while, but I think the other two cats in my road are being invaded as well. Our Cat is actually quite friendly with the other two, which is really strange. Last summer I came back to my house and found my cat and the other two sunbathing on my driveway!

Average these days for an indoor cat is 17 years. Though Pandora was an Indoor/outdoor cat. The record for a cat is 34 years.

I thought it was a bit lower, about 28, but then I'm probably wrong.

Ooh, seal point.
I had a blue point with blue eyes...he was pedigree so his name had to begin with 'L' and had a surname too so he ended up as Lord James Poppydown :/ but I loved him...despite the fluff! I miss him :(

I'm sure you do. I'm really, really dreading the day my little friend dies. It sometimes seems like he's the only friend I have left. :(

My favorite dog was Snowball, a samoyed. He was really sweet but not too bright. He was terrified of men, but loved kids. We think a man abused him before we got him. He was sooo pretty.

When we lived in Upstate New York, a friend of ours wo bred them gave us a Keeshound pup. She grew up with our children and was the sweetest, smartest little dog I have ever known. :)

Emotions are often a mystery. When they told me my grandmother ( who raised me until I was 12 ) died, I felt virtually nothing. It wasn't until many years later that her death finally hit me. :(

I remember smilling when my grandad died, and having to fein sadness so as not to upset my dad, the next week I suddenly got very upset about it.

Lurrrvebird! We caught one of those, put him in a handybird cage before he escaped. He should have been called Houdini.
What always made me laugh was this 'match the cat breed to you' test I took, though it worked the other way, by telling you the stats of the breed. One ranged from Independant to stupid. Himalayan (colourpoint) persians were very close to stupid :D LJ wasn't really stupid...lazy maybe, and really timid. The area's full of females and even the little tabby next door could chase him.
