Anyone else play a sport in High School?

Particulary, if you are on a swim team, I'd like to know.

If you understand the difference betweem Varsity and Junior Varsity, do you think that a time of 1 minute, 18.83 seconds on a 100 freestyle is good for Junior Varsity? Competative? Keep in mind, my time on this was 1:28:57 just a little over a month ago.

I'd get this info. from my coach, but I'm impatient and would like to get an estimate now. :D Besides, I'm interested to know how everyone else does, and if anyone else has a life OUTSIDE of NS.

Sorry, I'm just a wholesome Linebacker who smacks people. I ended up being captain and honorable mention in my league, however my coach nominated me for guard rather than linebacker in short,I should've been 1st team. Still going to play football in college next year though.

Yes, the football teams are extrememly overrated. But whatever rallies the school together I guess...

Lol, without sports a high school would have no way of identifying itself. Every school would be the same and its students would drone their way through school. I uberly despise people who think like that.

I'm Varsity softball manager.
Can't say I like the system of devoting yourself to one sport...which you must know how to play, as they won't teach you.
Three years ago I was playing netball, hockey, swimming, trampolining, squash, working out, tennis, rounders, cricket, dance (yuck), volleyball, athletics (more yuck) and ballgirling. Oh and kingball, but that doesn't count.

Where I grew up, sport was organised outside the school and was a personal choice like going to church - your private business.

There was no interaction and relation between school and sports club.
(And no interaction between school and church either.)

Our boys volleyball is apparently ranked 15th in the U.S.

I am a swimmer right now, still in High School, at least for two more years. You got a 1:18:83 on a 100 freestyle? Before I say anything else I need to know how long you've been swimming. I'm alternating between Junior Varsity and Varsity because I'm one of the main fly swimmers and a strong IM swimmer. My 100 free time isn't that good compared to my team but we have a good team so I don't know how to compare.(51:3)

I started the team back in November '04. We really haven't started practicing everyday until a couple weeks ago. And I'm a freshman.

And a 51:3 time on the 100 free will probably get you in varsity for our team. Then again, this is the first year our school has a swim team.

Looking back as a college freshman, I already wish I had been involved in sports in middle and high school.

Sigh.

Oh you guys are a new swim school? Well welcome to the ranks. My school started a 4 short years ago. If you started in November, you're making pretty good progress. I started swimming last year(swim season is 3 months for us for those who don't know) and started with a time of 1:16:26. I got involved in swimming through water polo so the only stroke I actually knew how to swim was head-up freestyle. Believe me, I suffered during that year. As for my 100 free time, it's still not good enough for our CIF. Consideration time is 50:90. You have a particular stroke yet or are you just testing them out still?

My best one is freestyle. I actually kick as well as anyone on varsity, but when I do my freestyle with my arm movements, my kick isn't so fast anymore.

And my butterfly and breaststroke are just terrible. My backstroke is slow, IMO. 1:59 in a 100.

Bah! I hate sports too damn much and I suck at everything to care. Too much prepness to go with the territory and most are just simply big suck-ups to the REAL enemies.

Track and Basketball. You could probley start a paintball club, advertisments all around the school, i did, and we got second place at (Canadian)nationals because of it

yeah, your backstroke is pretty slow but since you're in your first year, it's not so bad. CIF consideration is 1:00 here but im 6 seconds too slow. darn. And prepiness goes with some sports but it's still aa stereotype. Though I have to admit our water polo team can sometimes be...eh. My breaststroke is pretty slow as well but that's to be expected from a fly swimmer. I get a 1:12 at best. And don't worry about any of your times yet. Second season is way more important becasue the faster you get, the harder it is to improve. And I'm only in my second year so it's bound to get worse.

I'm confused. You despise people who have no identity other than school sports, or you despise people who think there is more to life than sports?

Think he's trying to say that sports gives students uniqueness, and a chance to excel in an area other than academics or the arts.

Lessee, wrestled in high-school and managed to be above mediocre at it. Never really did that well aside from once placing second in Eastern Ontario (Less impressive than it sounds, trust me).

i played football (all-state) and ran track in HS (won a couple of state championships). i went on to be a scholarship FB/track runner in college. now i am in grad school. about all i want to say on the subject is that HS sports really mean nothing once you are 1 year removed from HS--no one cares or remembers anymore (me included). college athletics are a job--the game is gone and is no longer fun anymore. my advice: enjoy HS athletics while you can, those days will fly by.

Southern California.
So Cal.....so, you guys just have the shallow end of the pools down there, right? Ah, I slay me......

I was on swim team which is the only reason I'm responding, because I can't for the life of me remember my times. I did butterfly, IM, and 1000 (I think, whatever the looooooooong races where...) because I could do butterfly and for a time I just never got tired. I wasn't super fast, but I wouldn't wear out.

Those days are looooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg gone. I actually want to start swimming because while I was far from being a star, between being mediocre at swimming and absolutely horrible at karate (but it was fun-Kenpo for those who care) I was in fine shape. I should go back, once I have the time a scrill to do those things.
