Here are two articles from my hometown's newspaper. My old high school band director is the one involved in these allegations.

Let me just preface these articles by saying I was never comfortable with the man, to the point that I quit band my senior year after 7 years of being in the band.

Also, many of us knew of these allegations in his first year of teaching, but we were unable to make it known to those with the power to do anything. It's been 2 1/2 years, but they finally got the creep. So without further ado, here are the articles.

Yikes! The article indicates the investigation is ongoing so nothing has been proven yet, but still ... !

I know nothing has been proven yet, but in our backwater little hole it won't matter. The allegation alone is enough to ruin him as far his career, and since there is so much evidence, I seriously doubt that he'll get off.

I teach down in Terre Haute, IN, and we've had three teachers booted in the past month for having sexual relations with students-- one of whom actually fathered a child with one of the girls. I'm pretty disgusted that these people don't have enough honesty to just keep themselves out of schools if they're contemplating actually doing something like this.

Grr.

Holy crap! You teach in TH? I'm a freshman at ISU. Small world huh? Also, I think a lot of this is that Reynard came to Crawfordsville directly out of college, and probably wasn't mature enough to be in such a position. Probably should have been an assistant somewhere first.

a spanish teacher in albuquerque was accused of a similar thing when his 16 year old student turned up pregnant. while they denied that the baby was his, they were married in las vegas over new years.

the girls mother was quoted as saying ....
In the police affidavit for Ortiz's arrest, the mother is quoted as saying "she would rather have her daughter with a person that loves her and (is) going to take care of her than a drug addict from the Valley."

and with a mother like that, maybe she is better off with him

when my nephew got out of college he started out teaching in highschool. having the girls flirting with him and asking him out quickly convinced him that middle school was a better option. now that he's 33 he has gone back to teaching highschool english with much better results.

As a first-year teacher myself, it upsets me that cases like these give all of us bad names. If I were a parent of my students, I think I would be justifiably scared of what's going on. I've taken the steps of cancelling some of my after-school activities because I had too few (and all female) kids working on them... it's a sad thing to have to do, but there's too much of a risk of career-ending allegations otherwise.

But you're quite right, the teacher(s) in question have not handled themselves maturely. My question is this-- would they have tried the same things if they'd gotten into teaching at age 30? I think they probably would.

Wow, a mother who'd care that her daughter was loved and being taken care of by someone regardless of their age, how horrible...

Not to say that all first year teachers are not mature enough to handle the situation, but quite often that is the case. Especially when there is a great deal of work that must be done outside of regular school hours, such as in a high school marching/concert band.

Had he been 30 when he first accepted the position, I feel that he would have been more grounded in keeping the distinction between what is acceptable and what is not.

What the article does not mention is his first offense with a student, who was at the time 18. This girl was perfectly legitamate for him with the only exception being that she was a student. The only proof that exists of this is my friendship with the girl, and the stories she shared with me. I think this was the initial temptation, and the lack of maturity brought about the criminal offenses.
