Am I stuck back in time?

While everyone at school is listening to Green Day, I'm listening to the Ramones Blitzkrieg Bop, The Trashmen's Surfin' Bird, Rare Earths Get Ready and Funkytown.

I'm 14 and I'm listening to that. Is there something wrong with me?

Nope, it just means you have different tastes in music. I wouldn't say there was anything wrong with you because of your musical tastes, even if you were into morbid death metal or something.

I don't recognise any other those songs or albums or whatever they are, but I would hate to have to only listen to recent music - I wouldn't be able to listen to Black Sabbath and other great things. I'd hate to only listen to old music too.

I'm not much older, and I'm listening to the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Dr. Hook, the Drifters and Mozart/Strauss/Vivaldi etc.
Buechoria
25-02-2005, 20:35
Oh yeah, Beach Boys and Beates are pretty good. My friend Austin called me Beach Boy because I listened to it all the time. Well, that was before he moved to Canada.

Nope.

I'm 14, n listen to Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Queen, Led Zeppelin etc. - it just means you're more 'individual' then everyone else.

Besides, I agree; it just means you have good taste. Music these days suck.

The problem isn't what the time period of the music you're listening to is, its what you're listening to from that time period.

It depends. Are they listening to "Dookie"? Or the new one?

Don't be scared if you differ from your friends. The best way to solve the problem is to turn it to your own advantage.
I'm 17(soon 18) and I'm the only one in my school who likes to listen to all kinds of eurodance hits of the 90's. I also love listening to morbid death metal but that's so common in Finland that I don't listen to it in the public.
I've turned the problem to my own advantage easily: How easy do you think it would be to get a free seat with a safety area of 3 meters in diameter in a bus if you're listening to something like green day or whatever.
That happens ALWAYS when I listen to Captain Jack or some german techno-music with full bass and maximum volume (of course).
You should be proud of your oddity and make it your trademark like I've done. ;)

So, I'm 25, and most of the music I'm listening to is older then me (Rare Grooves, Funk etc.). To each his own.

Contemporary "music" is mostly not worth listening to, in my ears, so why should you be crazy because of your opinion about or taste in music.

On the other hand, if I wouldn't get my regular dosis of Acid Jazz or Lounge, I'd miss something.

BTW, if you like The Ramones, you might want to check out Guitar Wolf, but albums can be hard to get, as they're from Japan.

Glenn Miller, bah. I prefer benny goodman, or maybe even some actual real jazz instead of that nasty, nasty watered down 'swing' junk. Gimmie Louie Armstrong anyday!

;)

Oh and being 14 and liking the Ramones instead of the latest American Idol pop crap doesn't mean insanity, it means, to me, good taste. heh!

Or just the english punkband that was inspired by Ramoners like Sex pistols and The Clash that is really good. London Calling album with the clash is really good even if it's not exactly the same as Ramones

I'm not really into Punk, I just now some "classics" and accidentally stumbled over Guitar Wolf, as they made the excellent end theme for the mediocre Wild Arms anime. ;)

Although I have been to a big band performance last Sunday, I normally can't listen to Swing or the Jazz standards anymore. They're not aggressive enough and, when you sooner or later discover the wild tracks from the 60ies and 70ies "Dancefloor Jazz" scene, lack innovation. But maybe that's just in my eyes. Standard Jazz has been played to death on culturally high brow radio and in the town where I'm from, and the people there just weren't able to leave the common tracks and expand their horizon.

That's why I never refuse to listen to music I don't know. Hey, sometimes I'm even listening to Death Metal, although I don't like most Metal.

How did you work that one out? I'm sure lots of people have heard of him.

I myself went to a tribute concert of his with a girl I like. We were the only teenagers there. That was great. Everyone else was at least 60. But it was a fantastic night.

[Actually, a few people might not know him, but I'd be surprised at someone who hadn't heard "In the Mood" one way or another...]

Good for you. I'm over 30, and although I listened to some of those you mention during the 70s, for me it was a lot of early Who, Stones, Zeppelin, Beatles, Janis, Hendrix, and even older like Little Richard, Buddy Holly, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, and Jerry Lee Lewis.

Nothing wrong with you. What's actually wrong is acritically ingesting whatever pap they feed you over TV.

I was surprised at my high school that a bunch of kids had good taste in music rather than rushing out to buy the latest mass-produced pop hits. Like, for some reason, the skater subculture in the area got turned on to Led Zepppelin and Black Sabbath, which was cool since it meant half the school was exploring more music than just recent stuff. That made me happy.

Listen to what you want, not what other people want you to listen to. I got my music taste from my dad - so it's mainy 70s stuff like Emerson Lake & Palmer, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Hawkwind, as well as some of the more interesting modern stuff. Then in the last year or so I've developed a taste for punk, hardcore and ska. Sadly a lot of my friends like hip hop, r&b, dance, modern pop etc...which I despise with a passion. If you're listening to the Ramones that can only be a good thing.
