My brother has a social science test soon about nazi germany, and could use a definition of what the nazi ideology actually is. Since there are a lot of people here with widely varying political views, i thought id ask you all to post your thoughts on nazism, so he can get some various perspectives on it.

Thanks!

National socialism is a political party that exploits the worker first ideals of socialism in order to justify completely immoral economic and social systems.

Yeah, how do they do that?

Through intense nationalism, scapegoating, and violence.

IIRC Nazisim as an economic system was essentially Fascisim, that is, Private Ownership of Industry (profits were allowed) under Total Government Control (Social Control of Private Industry... hm, sounds much like the Greens to me...).

It really had little else to do with classic economic socialisim.

As a Political system it was a pure Dictatorial Totalitarian Police State suffering the whims of a madman.

As an ethical system, well...

Your best chance is to look up the histories of Spain, Italy, and Germany in the 20's and 30's.

The Nazis actually believed in a fascist ideology that they called "National Socialism" so that they could get the more moderate leftists on their side. Fascism, contrary to popular belief, is not an ideology that glorifies only violence, genocide, and authoritarianism. It is a very complicated ideology that is best described in the writings (or ghost-writings, rather) of Mussolini. Fascism is based mostly on mythology and emotion rather than reason, but that does not make it a completely imagined ideology without political roots. The authoritarian aspects make it well-suited to unstable countries such as Germany after the first World War where the people are looking for an authority figure who can give them hope. Hitler based much of his public figure on a long-held German belief in the "Fuhrer Prinzip", or "Fuhrer Principle", which said that a leader would come to Germany to unite them and lead them to their true place as rulers of the world.
I hope this has helped you a bit. Two good books to look for are The Hitler Myth by Ian Kershaw and Mussolini's "On Fascism" writings.

well, Nationalsocialism has few to do with socialism and the NSDAP called themself a workers party, but wasnt a real workers party.

Nationalsocialism contains a few points.

-"Rassenlehre" dont know how to translate, but a important part of nationalsocialism is the believe that one race is the top of evolution and shall rule other races. It also means destroying the worst race, the Jews (actually human races never existed, but the Nationalsocialists said so)
"Rassenlehre" is also using nationalist and patriotist thoughts.

-Totalitarism. In the believe of the Nationalsocialist only one man shall rule the world, because this job needs a strong leader. Democracy is for sissys and every thought and word against the regime is an crime.

- Everything is given from the parents to their childs. Dangerous thoughts, crime ect. can only be destroyed by killing the ones who do these things.

- Another important part of nationalsocialism is the idea of an great national community. Everyone has his place in the community. If he cant fulflill his dutys or dont want to live the life, the community said him to do, hes worthless and must be destroyed. Also this community has one leader, like explained in totalitarism.

- only war can show true strenght. War must be fought and everyone should be able to fight. If not, hes worthless as long, as he isnt a woman. Then she only has to become children... as much as possible.

- the last important thing to know about nationalsocialism is the fact, that they believe different cultures cant live together. Every contact between two different cultures has to be forbidden. Oh, and the arian culture is the best....

Well, needless to say what idiotic thinking it is, but this is nationalsocialism. It dont has much to do with real socialism and because of great differences (especially Rassenlehre, the idea of one Leader, the war thing and much more) communism and nationalsocialism/fascism are the greatest enemys.
