MEMBERS of an elite crime-fighting squad in Bangladesh were deployed to seize a truckload of smuggled Indian onions after an anonymous tip-off, a report said.
Officers from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), feared throughout the country after killing more than 100 alleged terrorists in "crossfire" incidents, found the onions in a truck near the border with India, the official BSS agency said.
The onions, worth around $US5000 ($6336), were discovered in the southwestern Satkhira district which borders India's West Bengal state.
Last year the RAB was called in to drive down the price of onions in markets after traders were accused of inflating prices. The traders staged a one-day strike in protest at the action.
The battalion, which is made up of police as well as members of the armed forces and paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles, was formed by the government as part of an initiative to reduce rising levels of crime.
