WTF does the 'eh' mean?

Der Lieben

It seems like I constantly see 'the' misspelled as 'teh' and 'me' mispelled as 'meh.' What the fuck does it mean; its driving me batshit insane. :headbang: Please assist before 'my head a splode.' :D

"meh" is not "me"

the only time I've used 'meh' is when I need a word to convey mediocrity.

"Dude, this game rocks!"

"Meh. It was ok."

"Eh" is what us Canadians says. What the hell it means, I'm not sure.

If used as a question, e.g. "eh?", it can mean "please reiterate the last point", or "what the fuck did you just say?"

"meh" and "eh" go best with a shrug of the shoulders

Yeah... "eh" is also heard often in the UP of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. in such places it rhymes with "day"

Although usually it's pronouncedmore like "ay" (to rhyme with hay), and used to invoke agreement...sure is cold out today, eh? To which you might reply "meh. I've seen worse."

Eh:

1. A term used to express confusion. (ex. Eh?)
2. A term used by Canadians to compound a point. (ex. Not a bad game, eh?)

Meh:

1. A term used to discribe a person/place/thing/idea as neither good nor bad. (ex. Joe: What did you think of that movie Bob? Bob: Meh...)

Teh:

1. A misspelling of "the", used by typists that rush.
2. A quazi-1337 term. (Ex. d00d, taht pizza was teh bomb!)

Hope that clears some things up.

Thanks all. That helps. I've still never heard 'meh' used in speech, though.

I've heard 'meh' all the time...

But it CAN be used for 'me' too.

Like, you know. "Feed meh!" or something. But it's more common to see it as apathy/desgination of mediocrity.

Eh: 2. A term used by Canadians to compound a point. (ex. Not a bad game, eh?)

3. A term used by scallies (also known as chavs) as a form of verbal punctuation. (Note this is usually pronounced like the 'a' in 'air' rather than as an 'ay')

I think the sounds you make all depends on where you live. Try saying it out loud HorMaN. Did you do it? Usually ofr me, it implies uncertainty. Sometimes astonishment or disappointment, it all depends. For a nother question, I get that uber is sort of like very or ultra, but what doe sit really mean?

Note that there is a difference between the Canadian "eh" which sounds more like "Ay", and the other "eh", which sounds like it looks.

Also, there is 'ne', which is most likely derived from Japanese, but is often spelled 'neh'. It basically means "Is that so?" and "Isn't it?", or "Ya know?" in common usage.

"That's the way it goes, ne?"

American:
Eh? = What you just said, could you repeat it in a similar terminology?

Incenjurania has a point, HorMaN. Sounds often mean what they sound like... like onomatopeias. So try saying it out loud. Ah... does that make any sense?

I usually mistype "the" as "teh" when I'm trying to dumb down the appearance of my post for humourous reasons.

I'm possibly wrong, but I think Jeff K. (http://www.somethingawful.com/jeffk/) made regular use of "teh" as widespread as it is today.

Ne, is used this way, but its origin is not necessarily Japanese. The Portuguese for "isn't it" is "não é" which is always contracted to né when used as a question tag. As English speakers tend to ignore accents, this becomes ne (pronounced the same as niegh and not pronounced as knee)

That sounds like a derivative of "Nay"

I'm talking "Neh", like in "Never"

So desu ne, etc.

Mind you, my exposure to it was largely via anime fans and people associating with anime fans. Wakarimasu ka? :D

All I said was it was not necessarily from Japanese, a language of which my knowledge is slightly less than that of the taxonomy of bamboo.

I started saying "eh" and "neh" after reading Ender's Shadow...cuz that's part of the slang that they use...

meh just kind of came...

Eh is sort of like what they were saying with "ne". I use it like Canadians use it. "That's cool, eh?" Also: "Eh, I don't know..." Or someone says something wierd and you're like, "Eh!?" Also, I use is similar to "er" "Um...er...eh..."

Neh is like eh, only negative. "Wanna go to the mall?" "Neh, I'm too tired." So it's like nah or naw, 'cept it's neh.

Meh is just...meh...
It's like, "whatever". "It's snowing!" "meh.."

Thanks all. That helps. I've still never heard 'meh' used in speech, though.

I say 'meh' all the time, it's efficient.

Meh means 'My feelings are completely indifferent to the person/place/thing/event/idea that you just asked me about or are talking about.'

As you can see, it's easier to just say 'meh'.

I use 'meh' an 'eh' interchangeably - example:

'meh?' = 'eh?' (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8293327&postcount=2084)

ÜBER - German word, literal translation "over". Used in forums and gaming language as a superlative, similar to "greatest".

eg. "rob is teh uberfragger" - Rob is extremely good at killing people in this game.
