Say So Much...

Lately I've been in such a mood for sad music, all of the down trodden, low down and dirty sounds I can muster won't sate this desire...

Post some of the saddest songs you can think of to help me out... lyrics too if you wish :)

I'll start us off with a this one (fit the lyrics don't make you cry, you'd better find it and give a listen - the song will for sure):

Billy Austin
(Steve Earle)

My name is Billy Austin
I'm Twenty-Nine years old
I was born in Oklahoma
Quarter Cherokee I'm told

Don't remember Oklahoma
Been so long since I left home
Seems like I've always been in prison
Like I've always been alone

Didn't mean to hurt nobody
Never thought I'd cross that line
I held up a filling station
Like I'd done a hundred times

The kid done like I told him
He lay face down on the floor
guess I'll never know what made me
Turn and walk back through that door

The shot rang out like thunder
My ears rang like a bell
No one came runnin'
So I called the cops myself

Took their time to get there
And I guess I could'a run
I knew I should be feeling something
But I never shed tear one

I didn't even make the papers
'Cause I only killed one man
but my trial was over quickly
And then the long hard wait began

Court appointed lawyer
Couldn't look me in the eye
He just stood up and closed his briefcase
When they sentenced me to die

Now my waitin's over
As the final hour drags by
I ain't about to tell you
That I don't deserve to die

But there's twenty-seven men here
Mostly black, brown and poor
Most of em are guilty
Who are you to say for sure?

So when the preacher comes to get me
And they shave off all my hair
Could you take that long walk with me
Knowing hell is waitin' there

Could you pull that switch yourself sir
With a sure and steady hand
Could you still tell youself
That you're better than I am

My name is Billy Austin
I'm twenty-nine years old
I was born in Oklahoma
Quarter Cherokee I'm told

Johnny Cash's cover of "We'll Meet Again" may be the saddest song I have ever heard, considering the circumstances.

Ooo! Good one! (His cover of NIN's 'Hurt' is up there too)

He has a lot of them from late in his career, especially from that album. "Give My Love to Rose" is another sad one.

Also Dylan's "Not Dark Yet" is another fine sad song.

Title: A Bad Goodbye

I've been bound to leave you, we've known that for awhile
I'm sure it's something i can't do if i can't leave you with a smile
I don't know how far i'll have to go 'til i'm sure those eyes won't cry
And in my mind i've left enough to know that i can't leave you
With a bad goodbyegoodbye, easier said than done
Goodbye, there's no good when you're the one
Whose goodbye you swore would never come
And in my goodbye you're finding none
I'm still bound to leave you, i surely don't know how

My heart won't let me put you through
What my mind says should happen now
I don't know where we'll go from here, there may be no way to fly
And the cloud i'm in just makes it all too clear that i can't leave you
With a bad goodbye

Repeat chorus

How can we be so far between where we are and one more try
And any way i look, i've only seen that i can't leave you
With a bad goodbye

and one of my favorites(im a huge sara fan):

Title: Do What You Have To Do

What ravages of spirit
conjured this temptuous rage
created you a monster
broken by the rules of love
and fate has lead you through it
you do what you have to do
and fate has led you through it
you do what you have to do ...

and I have the sense to recognize that
I don't know how to let you go
every moment marked
with apparitions of your soul
I'm ever swiftly moving
trying to escape this desire
the yearning to be near you
I do what I have to do
the yearning to be near you

I do what I have to do
but I have the sense to recognize

that I don't know how
to let you go
I don't know how
to let you go

a glowing ember
burning hot
burning slow
deep within I'm shaken by the violence
of existing for only you

I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
I know I can't be with you
I do what I have to do
and I have sense to recognize but
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go
I don't know how to let you go

People just ain’t no good - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
People just ain't no good
I think that's well understood
You can see it everywhere you look
People just ain't no good

We were married under cherry trees
Under blossom we made our vows
All the blossoms come sailing down
Through the streets and through the playgrounds

The sun would stream on the sheets
Awoken by the morning bird
We'd buy the Sunday newspapers
And never read a single word

People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good

Seasons came, seasons went
The winter stripped the blossoms bare
A different tree now lines the streets
Shaking its fists in the air

The winter slammed us like a fist
The windows rattling in the gales
To which she drew the curtains
Made out of her wedding veils

People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good

To our love send a dozen white lilies
To our love send a coffin of wood
To our love let all the pink-eyed pigeons coo
That people they just ain't no good
To our love send back all the letters
To our love a valentine of blood
To our love let all the jilted lovers cry
That people they just ain't no good

It ain't in their hearts they're bad
They can comfort you, some even try
They nurse you when you're ill of health
They bury you when you go and die
It ain't that in their hearts they're bad
They'd stick by you if they could
Ah but that's just bull, baby
People just ain't no good

People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good
People they ain't no good

Creep - Radiohead
When you were here before
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel
Your skin makes me cry
You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
And I wish I was special
You're so fuckin' special

But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here.

I don't care if it hurts
I want to have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
When I'm not around
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo.
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here.

She's running out again,
She's running out
She's run run run running out...

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special...

But I'm a creep, I'm a weirdo,
What the hell am I doing here?
I don't belong here.
I don't belong here.

Hurt - Jonnie Cash cover
I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt

I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Stash - Sadness Lyrics

You said times with me were lots of fun
But now funny just ain’t what you want
Yeah my girl, ain’t that just a little strange
There were times you’d rather die than leave
Now you say: hold on a second here
yeah my love ain’t it all just a little strange
When you say: just hold on a second here

Better times are moving up ahead
And all sorrow is gone for good
Hey my girl, why don’t you just let it flow
All this time I tried to figure out
Just what it takes to live on your cloud
yeah my love, I guess I misunderstood
When you said; just hold on a second here

If sadness is a color, than it’s blue just like your eyes
And sorrow can be all over you but it will never tear me down

Better times are moving up ahead
And all sorrow is gone for good
But hey my love, I guess I misunderstood

If sadness is a color than it’s blue just like your eyes
And sorrow can be all over you but it will never tear me down If sadness is a color than it’s blue just like your eyes And sorrow can be all over you but it will never tear me down

I'd like to point out that 3EB's eponymous album has "Semi-charmed life" as the most positive bit on there. Listen to the lyrics a bit, then interpret.

But, as REM's NightSwimming popped on right now...
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
Turned around backwards so the windshield shows
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse
Still, it’s so much clearer
I forgot my shirt at the water’s edge
The moon is low tonight

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night
I’m not sure all these people understand
It’s not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
Of recklessness and water
They cannot see me naked
These things, they go away,
Replaced by everyday

Nightswimming, remembering that night
September’s coming soon
I’m pining for the moon
And what if there were two
Side by side in orbit
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
Could not describe nightswimming

You, I thought I knew you
You, I cannot judge
You, I thought you knew me,
This one laughing quietly underneath my breath
Nightswimming

The photograph reflects,
Every streetlight a reminder
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night

Linkin Park - My December

This is my december
This is my time of the year
This is my december
This is all so clear
This is my december
This is my snow covered home
This is my december
This is me alone
And i
Just wish that I didnt feel
Like there was something I missed
And i
Take back all the things I said
To make you feel like that
And i
Just wish that I didnt feel
Like there was something I missed
And i
Take back all the things I said to you
And I give it all away
Just to have somewhere to go to
Give it all away
To have someone to come home to
This is my december
These are my snow covered dreams
This is me pretending
This is all I need
And i
Just wish that I didnt feel
Like there was something I missed
And i
Take back all the things I said
To make you feel like that
And i
Just wish that I didnt feel
Like there was something I missed
And i
Take back all the things I said to you
And I give it all away
Just to have somewhere to go to
Give it all away
To have someone to come home to
This is my december
This is my time of the year
This is my december
This is all so clear
And I give it all away
Just to have somewhere to go to
Give it all away
To have someone to come home to

Far too many but this one springs to mind:

Tears In Heaven
by Eric Clapton and Will Jennings
Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven?

I'll find my way
Through night and day,
'Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven.

Time can bring you down,
Time can bend your knees.
Time can break your heart,
Have you begging please, begging please.

Beyond the door,
There's peace I'm sure,
And I know there'll be no more
Tears in heaven.

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same
If I saw you in heaven?

I must be strong
And carry on,
'Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven.

Most sad songs, you really need to hear them singing it to get the emotion across.

And also songs that have personal meanings to you can be incredibly sad whereas to other people they mean nothing. Like (God help me) a Good Charlotte song makes me incredibly upset-blame my friend who told me about it and said that's how he felt....

Goo Goo Dolls - Iris

Iris

And I’d give up forever to touch you
’cause I know that you feel me somehow
You’re the closest to heaven that i’ll
Ever be
And I don’t want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
’cause sooner or later it’s over
I just don’t want to miss you tonight

And I don’t want the world to see me
’cause I don’t think that they’d
Understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And you can’t fight the tears that ain’t
Coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
Yeah you bleed just to know you’re alive

And I don’t want the world to see me
’cause I don’t think that they’d
Understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don’t want the world to see me
’cause I don’t think that they’d
Understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

And I don’t want the world to see me
’cause I don’t think that they’d
Understand
When everything’s made to be broken
I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am
I just want you to know who I am

Peech, I want one bajillion three hundred and sixty eight thousand nine hundred and twenty five... :D

(better IM me them later, hahahaha!)

Another couple:

Wheat Kings
(The Tragically Hip)

Sundown in the Paris of the prairies
Wheat Kings have all their treasures burried
All you hear are the rusty breezes
Hanging around the weather vane Jesus

In a zippo lighter you see the killer's face
Maybe it's someone standing in the killers place
Twenty Years for nothing well that nothing new
Besides no one is interested in what you didn't do
Wheat Kings and pretty things,
Lets just see what the morning brings

There's a dream he dreams where the high school is dead and stark
It's a museum and we're al locked up and after dark up in it and after dark
Where the walls are lined all yellow gray and sinister
Hung with pictures of our parents prime ministers
Wheat Kings and pretty things,
Lets just see what the tomorrow brings

Late breaking story on the CBC,
A nation whispers "we always know he'd go free"
They add "you can't be fond of living in the past,
Cause if you are then there is no way you are going to last"
Wheat Kings and pretty things,
Lets just see what the morning brings
Wheat Kings and pretty things,
Thats what the morning brings

Im stealing someone elses thunder with this one, but its so sad I have to post it...

Kilkelly, 1860
(Peter Jones)

Kilkelly, Ireland, 1860, my dear and loving son John
Your good friend schoolmaster Pat McNamara's so good
as to write these words down.
Your brothers have all got a fine work in England,
the house is so empty and sad
The crop of potatoes is sorely infected,
a third to a half of them bad.
And your sister Brigid and Patrick O'Donnell
are going to be married in June.
Mother says not to work on the railroad
and be sure to come on home soon.

Kilkelly, Ireland, 1870, my dear and loving son John
Hello to your Mrs and to your 4 children,
may they grow healthy and strong.
Michael has got in a wee bit of trouble,
I suppose that he never will learn.
Because of the darkness there's no turf to speak of
and now we have nothing to burn.
And Brigid is happy, we named a child for her
and now she's got six of her own.
You say you found work, but you don't say
what kind or when you will be coming home.

Kilkelly, Ireland, 1880, dear Michael and John, my sons
I'm sorry to give you the very sad news
that your dear old mother has gone.
We buried her down at the church in Kilkelly,
your brothers and Brigid were there.
You don't have to worry, she died very quickly,
remember her in your prayers.
And it's so good to hear that Michael's returning,
with money he's sure to buy land
For the crop has been bad and the people
are selling at every price that they can.

Kilkelly, Ireland, 1890, my dear and loving son John
I suppose that I must be close on eighty,
it's thirty years since goodbye.
Because of all of the money you send me,
I'm still living out on my own.
Michael has built himself a fine house
and Brigid's daughters have grown.
Thank you for sending your family picture,
they're lovely young women and men.
You say that you might even come for a visit,
what joy to see you again.

Kilkelly, Ireland, 1892, my dear brother John
I'm sorry I didn't write sooner to tell you, but father passed on.
He was living with Brigid, she says he was cheerful
and healthy right down to the end.
Ah, you should have seen him play with
the grandchildren of Pat McNamara, your friend.
And we buried him alongside of mother,
down at the Kilkelly churchyard.
He was a strong and a feisty old man,
considering his life was so hard.
And it's funny the way he kept talking about you,
he called for you in the end.
Oh, why don't you think about coming to visit,
we'd all love to see you again.

radiohead - exit music (for a film)
EDIT: lyrics

Wake... from your sleep
The drying of your tears
Today.. we escape
We escape.

Pack and get dressed
Before your father hears us
Before.. all hell.. breaks loose.

Breathe... keep breathing
Don't lose.. your nerve.
Breathe... keep breathing
I can't do this.. alone.

Sing us a song
A song to keep us warm
There's such a chill
Such a CHILL.

You can laugh
A spineless laugh
We hope that your rules and wisdom choke you
Now we are one
In everlasting peace

We hope that you choke.. that you choke
We hope that you choke.. that you choke
We hope that you choke.. that you choke
You Forgot Poland

Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits:

These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And you'll no longer burn
To be brothers in arm

Through these fields of destruction
Baptism of fire
I've watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms

There's so many different worlds
So many different suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones

Now the sun's gone to hell
And the moon's riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But it's written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
We're fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

His Infernal Majesty "And Love Said No"

And loves light would
Let me be you
Through all the emptiness that had become my home
And love's ice cold
It seduced me with you
And at that moment I knew I was out of hope

Heal me
I begged and love said no
Leave me
for dead and let me go
Kill me
I cried and love said no
Kill me
I cried and love said no

Love's icy tomb
Dug open for you
Lies in a cemetery that may use my name
Love's fiery tomb
From me to you
Rips your heart out and leaves you
bleeding with a smile on your face

Heal me
I begged and love said no
Leave me
for dead and let me go
Kill me
I cried and love said no
Kill me
I cried and love said no

And love said no

And loves light would
Seduced me with you
And at that moment I knew I was out of hope

Again

Heal me
I begged and love said no
Leave me
for dead and let me go
Kill me
I cried and love said no
Kill me
I cried and love said no

And love said no

Deftones "Change (In The House of Flies)"

I watched you change
Into a fly
I looked away
You were on fire
I watched a change in you
It's like you never had wings
And you feel so alive
I've watched you change

I took you home
Set you on the glass
I pulled off your wings
Then I laughed
I watched a change in you
It's like you never had words
Now you feel so alive
I watched you change

It's like you never had...
annhh-ahah (6x)

I look at the cross
And I look away
Give you the gun
Blow me away
I watched a change in you
It's like you never had words
Now you feel so alive
I've watched you change
And you feel alive
You feel alive (2x)
I've watched you change
It's like you never had...

annhh-ahah (6x)
You change (3x)

The Deftones song is mostly just insanely depressing when you hear it with the music, i'm not sure why. Anything by HIM is depressing and sad, especially "Close to the flame" the lyrics of which aren't that sad, but the song itself is. I'm not sure why, i just get that vibe from it. Man there are lots of songs, my top one is probably Tears in Heaven, though, and someone already posted that one.

This one is the saddest of all to me for personal reasons, so I should post it too:

The Dance
(Garth Brooks)

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared 'neath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known that you'd ever say goodbye

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives are better left in chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance

Holding you, I held everything
For a moment wasn't I a king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey who's to say? you know I might have changed it all

And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance

Yes my life, its better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance

Far Away Boys
(Flogging Molly)

Well I worked on the railroad
For t'pence a day
Drank down one penny
The other I'd save
I hammered and I hammered
For God knows how long
Well into madness, with each setting sun
I put my head down and I dreamt you were here
With me by the ol' tree, where no one could care

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I'm lyin' with my sweetheart
In her arms I'll be found

Then the sun belched upon me
You were no longer here
Lyin' in your place was my hammer and my gear
So I stamped out the fire that kept us both warm
The ashes were fallin'
Like the snow drops of old
We came to a mountain
Dynamite and she'll blow
A big hole in that rock
Like the one in my soul

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I'm lyin' with my sweetheart
In her arms I'll be found

We buried four workmen
They dug themselves well
From four empty coffins, to four early graves
They're only paddys, just paddys
Don't dig them too deep
You'll need all your strength boys
And they're replaced easily
With the heat I was melting
Into your sweet lips
Ah, your kiss takes me back
Takes me back from all this

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I'm lyin' with my sweetheart
In her arms I'll be found

Someone said it was Christmas
But not a tree was in sight
The only thing growin' was my will to die
Till the gaffer said 'men, your work here is done'
I said 'I'll see you in Hell, on that train we died for'
Never again, will I smell your sweet dream
But a pissed stained ol' gutter where:
You lips used to be

Far Away Boys, Far Away Boys
Away from ya now
I'm lyin' with my sweetheart
In her arms I'll be found

That one really grabs me, I love Mark Knopfler, his guitar is enough to make a statue cry.

It's his unique combination of jazz, country, and rock. Those resonating, twanging blues notes just stick.

No matter where i am, this one always makes it hard for me not to cry (in the event that i don't cry):

CRANBERRIES - "Zombie"

Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?

But you see, it's not me, it's not my family.
In your head, in your head they are fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are crying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, dou, dou, dou, dou, dou...

Another mother's breakin',
Heart is taking over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.

It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen.
In your head, in your head they're still fighting,
With their tanks and their bombs,
And their bombs and their guns.
In your head, in your head, they are dying...

In your head, in your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie,
Hey, hey, hey. What's in your head,
In your head,
Zombie, zombie, zombie?
Hey, hey, hey, hey, oh, oh, oh,
Oh, oh, oh, oh, hey, oh, ya, ya-a...

When the Angels Sing
(Social Distortion)

At last we meet again, dear God
Hear the angels sing
The funerals are nicer when we know you're there
When the angels sing
Sometimes
I try so hard
To understand
The things you do
I like to question you
When it all comes down
Hear the angels sing
Stand up strong
Feel the pain
When the angels sing
Love
And death
Don't mean a thing
Till the angels sing

The prisoners pray when they're on to death row
When the angels sing
The junky
Cries for love but it's all run out
When the angels sing
The sins
Of the world
And it's cold on the streets
And you're all alone
And the tears
They start to fall
When it all comes down
Hear the angels sing

Stand up strong
Feel the pain
When the angels sing
Love
And death
Don't mean a thing
Till the angels sing
Little
By little
Day by day
I watch the children play
Cause life
And death
Don't mean a thing
Till the angels sing

When the angel of death comes to looking for me
Hear the angels sing
I hope I was everything I was supposed to be
When the angels sing
There's gotta be a heaven
Cause I've already done
My time in hell
And a little
Baby's born when it all comes down
Hear the angels sing

Stand up strong
Feel the pain
When the angels sing
Love
And death
Don't mean a thing
Till the angels sing
Little
By little
Day by day
I watch the children play
Cause life
And death
Don't mean a thing
Till the angels sing

Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits:
Know what's funny? I was just about to post that. Instead, have another one by them:
Romeo and Juliet off Making Movies, by Dire Straits

A love struck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?
Juliet says hey its Romeo you nearly gave me a heart attack
He’s underneath the window she's singing hey la my boyfriend's back
You shouldn’t come around here singing up at people like that
Anyway what you going to do about it?
Juliet the dice were loaded from the start
And I bet and you exploded in my heart
And I forget I forget the movie song
When you going to realize it were just that the time was wrong Juliet?

Come up on different streets they both were streets of shame
Both dirty both mean yes and the dream was just the same
And I dream your dream for you and now your dream is real
How can you look at me, as I was just another one of your deals?
Well you can fall for chains of silver you can fall for chains of gold
You can fall for pretty strangers and the promises they hold
You promised me everything you promised me thick and thin
Now you just say oh Romeo yeah you know I used to have a scene with him

Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
There’s a place for us you know the movie song
When you going to realise it were just that the time was wrong?
I can't do the talk like the talk on the TV
And I can't do a love song like the way it’s meant to be
I can't do everything but I'd do anything for you
Can’t do anything except be in love with you

And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be
All I do is keep the beat the bad company
All I do is kiss you through the bars of Orion
Julie I'd do the stars with you any time
Juliet when we made love you used to cry
You said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die
There’s a place for us you know the movie song
When you going to realise it were just that the time was wrong?

A love struck Romeo sings the streets a serenade
Laying everybody low with a love song that he made
Finds a convenient streetlight steps out of the shade
Says something like you and me babe how about it?

The Town I Loved So Well
-Phil Coulter-

In my memory I will always see
the town that I have loved so well
Where our school played ball by the gasyard wall
and we laughed through the smoke and the smell
Going home in the rain, running up the dark lane
past the jail and down behind the fountain
Those were happy days in so many, many ways
in the town I loved so well

In the early morning the shirt factory horn
called women from Creggan, the Moor and the Bog
While the men on the dole played a mother's role,
fed the children and then trained the dogs
And when times got tough there was just about enough
But they saw it through without complaining
For deep inside was a burning pride
in the town I loved so well

There was music there in the Derry air
like a language that we all could understand
I remember the day when I earned my first pay
And I played in a small pick-up band
There I spent my youth and to tell you the truth
I was sad to leave it all behind me
For I learned about life and I'd found a wife
in the town I loved so well

But when I returned how my eyes have burned
to see how a town could be brought to its knees
By the armoured cars and the bombed out bars
and the gas that hangs on to every breeze
Now the army's installed by that old gasyard wall
and the damned barbed wire gets higher and higher
With their tanks and their guns, oh my God, what have they done
to the town I loved so well

Now the music's gone but they carry on
For their spirit's been bruised, never broken
They will not forget but their hearts are set
on tomorrow and peace once again
For what's done is done and what's won is won
and what's lost is lost and gone forever
I can only pray for a bright, brand new day
in the town I loved so well

This one's kinda neat. There's a pretty good irony in the fact that the tune is very upbeat and happy sounding.

Simon and Garfunkel- I am a Rock

A winter’s day
In a deep and dark december;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I’ve built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It’s laughter and it’s loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

Don’t talk of love,
But I’ve heard the word before;
It’s sleeping in my memory.
I won’t disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.

And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.

Kinda reminds me of myself. :(

Oh wow!! S&G... soooo many great sad songs, heres one of my all time favorites:

The Boxer
(Simon and Garfunkel)

I am just a poor boy and my story’s seldom told
I’ve squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises
All lies and jest, still the man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest, hmmmm

When I left my home and my family, I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station, runnin’ scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters, where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

Li la li...

Asking only workman’s wages, I come lookin’ for a job, but I get no offers
Just a comeon from the whores on 7th avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there

Now the years are rolling by me, they are rockin’ even me
I am older than I once was, and younger than I’ll be, that’s not unusual
No it isn’t strange, after changes upon changes, we are more or less the same
After changes we are more or less the same

Li la li...

And I’m laying out my winter clothes, wishing I was gone, goin’ home
Where the new york city winters aren’t bleedin’ me, leadin’ me to go home

In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him
’til he cried out in his anger and his shame
I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains
Yes he still remains

Li la li...

This song from Pink Floyd's album "The Wall" has never failed to get me.

Pink Floyd
(Nobody Home)

I've got a little black book with my poems in
I've got a bag with a toothbrush and a comb in
When I'm a good dog they sometimes throw me a bone in
I got elastic bands keeping my shoes on
Got those swollen hand blues.
Got thirteen channels of shit on the T.V. to choose from

I've got electric light
And I've got second sight
I've got amazing powers of observation
And that is how I know
When I try to get through
On the telephone to you
There'll be nobody home

I've got the obligatory Hendrix perm
And the inevitable pinhole burns
All down the front of my favourite satin shirt
I've got nicotine stains on my fingers
I've got a silver spoon on a chain
I've got a grand piano to prop up my mortal remains

I've got wild staring eyes
I've got a strong urge to fly
But I've got nowhere to fly to

Ooooh Babe when I pick up the phone
There's still nobody home

I've got a pair of Gohills boots
And I've got fading roots...

i can't believe i forgot these:

Zero Chance by Soundgarden

I think I know the answer
I stumbled on and all the world
Fell down
And all the sky went silent
Cracked like glass and slowly
Tumbled to the ground
They say if you look hard
You'll find your way back home
Born without a friend
And bound to die alone
I'm thinking of your highness
And crying long upon the loss
I've found
And on the plus and minus

Zero chance of ever
Turning this around
Why doesn't anyone believe
In loneliness
Stand up and everyone will see
Your holiness
Why doesn't anyone believe
In loneliness
Stand up and everyone will see
Your holiness
They say if you look hard
You'll find your way back home
Born without a friend
And bound to die alone

AND

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell, blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail? A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze? Cold comfort for change?

And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground. What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Right on. That's another great one.

This is also a song that's very close to me:

Pink Floyd
(Sorrow)

The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land
Plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky:
A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers,
But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking

He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise
In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise
He's chained forever to a world that's departed
It's not enough, it's not enough

His blood has frozen & curdled with fright
His knees have trembled & given way in the night
His hand has weakened at the moment of truth
His step has faltered

One world, one soul
Time pass, the river rolls

And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication
And silent replies that swirl invitation
Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea
A grim intimation of what is to be

There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night
And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight
And silence that speaks so much louder that words,
Of promises broken

He has a lot of them from late in his career, especially from that album. "Give My Love to Rose" is another sad one.

Also Dylan's "Not Dark Yet" is another fine sad song.

Dylan's entire album "Oh Mercy" was depressing, but good.

streets of heaven by sherrie austin
i cry every time i hear it
by the time the singer accepts that her little girl is going to die and she asks god to hold her hand when she crosses the streets of heaven because shes too young to cross by herself im a basket case.

Hello God, it's me again. 2:00 a.m., Room 304.
Visiting hours are over, time for our bedside tug of war.
This sleeping child between us may not make it through the night.
I'm fighting back the tears as she fights for her life.
Well, it must be kind of crowded,
On the streets of Heaven.
So tell me: what do you need her for?
Don't you know one day she'll be your little girl forever.
But right now I need her so much more.
She's much too young to be on her own:
Barely just turned seven.
So who will hold her hand when she crosses the streets of Heaven?

Tell me God, do you remember the wishes that she made,
As she blew out the candles on her last birthday cake?
She wants to ride a pony when she'd big enough.
She wants to marry her Daddy when she's all grown up.

Lord, don't you know she's my angel
You got plenty of your own
And I know you hold a place for her
But she's already got a home
Well I don't know if you're listenin'
But praying is all that's left to do
So I ask you Lord have mercy, you lost a son once too

And it must be kind of crowded,
On the streets of Heaven.
So tell me: what do you need her for?
Don't you know one day she'll be your little girl forever.
But right now I need her so much more.
Lord, I know once you've made up your mind,
There's no use in beggin'.
So if you take her with you today, will you make sure she looks both ways,
And would you hold her hand when she crosses the streets of Heaven.

The streets of Heaven.

This is my favorite song ever, and it makes me cry everytime i hear it.

Too Much Love Will Kill You-Queen

I'm just the pieces of the man i used to be
Too many bitter tears are raining down on me
I'm far away from home
And i've been facing this alone
For much too long

I feel like no one ever told the truth to me
About growing up and what a struggle it would be
In my tangled state of mind
I've been looking back to find
Where i went wrong

Too much love will kill you
If you can't make up your mind
Torn between the lover
And the love you leave behind
You're headed for disaster
'Cause you never read the signs
Too much love will kill you, everytime

I'm just the shadow of the man i used to be
And it seems like there's no way out of this for me
I used to bring you sunshine, now all i ever do is bring you down
How would it be if you were standing in my shoes
Can't you see that it's impossible to choose
No there's no making sense of it
Everyway i go i'm bound to lose

Too much love will kill you
Just as sure as none as all
It'll drain the power that's in you
Make you plead and scream and crawl
And the pain will make you crazy
You're the victim of your crime
Too much love will kill you, everytime

Too much love will kill you
It'll make your life a lie
Yes too much love will kill you
And you won't understand why
You'd give your life, you'd sell your soul
But here it comes again
Too much love will kill you
In the end
In the end

Youth Of The Nation
P.O.D. - Satellite

Last day of the rest of my life
I wish I would’ve known
Cause I didn’t kiss my mama goodbye

I didn’t tell her that I loved her and how much I care
Or thank my pops for all the talks
And all the wisdom he shared

Unaware, I just did what I always do
Everyday, the same routine
Before I skate off to school

But who knew that this day wasn’t like the rest
Instead of taking a test
I took two to the chest

Call me blind, but I didn’t see it coming
Everybody was running
But I couldn’t hear nothing

Except gun blasts, it happened so fast
I don’t really know this kid
Even though I sit by him in class

Maybe this kid was reaching out for love
Or maybe for a moment
He forgot who he was
Or maybe this kid just wanted to be hugged
Whatever it was
I know it’s because

chorus:
We are, We are, the youth of the nation

Little Suzy, she was only twelve
She was given the world
With every chance to excel

Hang with the boys and hear the stories they tell
She might act kind of proud
But no respect for herself

She finds love in all the wrong places
The same situations
Just different faces

Changed up her pace since her daddy left her
Too bad he never told her
She deserved much better

Johnny boy always played the fool
He broke all the rules
So you would think he was cool

He was never really one of the guys
No matter how hard he tried
Often thought of suicide

It’s kind of hard when you ain’t got no friends
He put his life to an end
They might remember him then

You cross the line and there’s no turning back
Told the world how he felt
With the sound of a gat

chorus

Who’s to blame for the lives that tragedies claim
No matter what you say
It don’t take away the pain

That I feel inside, I’m tired of all the lies
Don’t nobody know why
It’s the blind leading the blind

I guess that’s the way the story goes
Will it ever make sense
Somebody’s got to know

There’s got to be more to life than this
There’s got to be more to everything
I thought exists

chorus

I don't know the names of these but they're pretty sad.

I wake up one morning and it's passed you by.
Don't know when and you don't know why.
I feel like an old memory hangin' round.
An' man, you've got to face it, it's a young man's town.

I knew this day was comin' all along.
Some why bitch an' moan and say they done you wrong.
Just teach 'em what you know an' pass it on down,
'Cause man, you gotta face it, it's a young man's town

It's a young man's town
Full of young man's dreams.
An' all God's children gotta learn to spread their wings.
An' sometimes you gotta stand back,
An' watch 'em burn it to the ground,
Even though you built it, it's a young man's town.

It's a young man's town,
Full of young man's dreams.
An' all God's children gotta learn to spread their wings.
An' sometimes you gotta stand back,
An' watch 'em burn it to the ground.
An' even though you built it, it's a young man's town.

Sometimes you gotta stand back,
An' watch 'em burn it to the ground.
Even though you built it, it's a young man's town.

It's a young man's town

Oh, Johnny wishes he was famous
Spends his time alone in the basement
With a Lennon and Cobain and
A guitar and a stereo

And while he wishes he could escape this
But it all seems so contagious
Not to be yourself and faceless
In a song that has no soul

I remember feeling low
I remember losing hope
And I remember all the feelings and the day they stopped

We are, we are all innocent
We are all innocent
We are, we are...

We are, we are all innocent
We are all innocent
We are, we are...

Oh, and Tina losing faith in what she knows
Hates her music, hates all of her clothes
Thinks of surgery and a new nose
Every calorie's a war

And while she wishes she was a dancer
And that she’d never heard of cancer
She wishes God would give her some answers
And make her feel beautiful

I remember feeling low
I remember losing hope
I remember all the feelings and the day they stopped

We are, we are all innocent
We are all innocent
We are, we are...

We are, we are all innocent
We are all innocent
We are, we are...

One day, you’ll have to let it go
You’ll have to let it go
No...
One day, you’ll stand up on your own
You’ll stand up on your own

Remember losing hope
Remember feeling low
Remember all the feelings and the day they stopped

We are, we are all innocent
We are all innocent
We are, we are...

We are, we are all innocent
We are all innocent
We are, we are...

We are (one day), we are all innocent
We are all innocent (you’ll have to let it go)
We are, we are (you’ll have to let it go, no..)

We are (one day), we are all innocent
We are, we are (you’ll stand up on your own)
We are, we are all innocent (you’ll stand up on your own..)

We are, we are all innocent

Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)

By, Nancy Sinatra

I was five and he was six
We rode on horses made of sticks
He wore black and I wore white
He would always win the fight

Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down

Seasons came and changed the time
When I grew up, I called him mine
He would always laugh and say
"Remember when we used to play?"

Bang bang, I shot you down
Bang bang, you hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, I used to shoot you down

Music played and people sang
Just for me the church bells rang

Now he's gone. I don't know why
And till this day, sometimes I cry
He didn't even say goodbye
He didn't take the time to lie

Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down

Piano man by Billy Joel

It's nine o'clock on a Saturday
The regular crowd shuffles in
There's an old man sitting next to me
Making love to his tonic and gin,"

He says, 'Son, can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet
And I know it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes'

La la la la la dee laa. . . La la la dee da. . . Da dum. . ."

He says, 'Son, can you play me a memory
I'm not really sure how it goes
But it's sad and it's sweet
And I know it complete
When I wore a younger man's clothes'

La la la la la dee laa. . . La la la dee da. . . Da dum. . ."

"Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' all right."

"Jon at the bar is a friend of mine
he gets me my drinks for free
And he's quick with a joke or
To light up your smoke
But there's some place that he'd rather be."

he says 'Yes, I believe this is killing me'
As a smile ran away from his face
'Well, I'm sure that I could be a movie star
If I could get out of this place'

Oh, la la la la la dee laa. . . La la la dee da. . . Da dum."

Now Paul’s a real estate novelist
Who's never had time for a wife
And he's talking with Davy,
Who's still in the navy,
And probably will be for life.

And the waitress is practicing politics!
As the businessmen slowly get stoned
Yes, they're sharing a drink
They call loneliness
But it's better than drinking alone!"

"Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feelin' all right."

"It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause she knows that it's me
They've been coming to see
To forget about life for a while

And the piano sounds like a carnival
And the whole place smells just like a beer
And they sit at the bar and
Put bread in my jar
And say 'Man, what are you doing here?!'

Oh, la la la la la dee laa. . . La la la dee da. . . Da dum."

"Sing us a song, you're the piano man
Sing us a song tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for a melody
And you've got us feeling all right!"

Brand New - Guernica

Ever since I was young
Your word is the word that always won
Worry and wake the ones you love
A phone call I'd rather not receive
Please use my body while I sleep
My lungs are fresh and yours to keep
Kept clean and they will let you breathe

Is this the way a toy feels when its batteries run dry?
I am the watch you always wear but you forget to wind

Nobody plans to be half a world away at times like these
So I sat alone and waited out the night
The best part of what has happened was the part I must have missed
So I'm asking you to shine it on and stick around
I'm not writing my goodbyes

I submit no excuse
If this is what I have to do I owe you every day I wake
If I could I would shrink myself
And sink through your skin to your blood cells
And remove whatever makes you hurt
But I am too weak to be your cure

Is this the way a toy feels when its batteries run dry?
I am the watch you always wear but you forget to wind

Nobody plans to be half a world away at times like these
So I sat alone and waited out the night
The best part of what has happened was the part I must have missed
So I'm asking you to shine it on and stick around
I'm not writing my goodbyes

I'm not letting you check out
You will beat this starting now
And you will always be around
I'm there to monitor your breathing
I will watch you while you're sleeping
I will keep you safe and sound

Does anybody remember back when you were very young?
Did you ever think that you would be this blessed?

Nobody plans to be half a world away at times like these
So I sat alone and waited out the night
The best part of what has happened was the part I must have missed
So I'm asking you to shine it on and stick around
I'm not writing my goodbyes

Bright Eyes - Padriac My Prince

i had a brother once
he drowned in a bathtub before he had ever learned how to talk
and i don't know what his name was but my mother does
i heard her say it once, padriac my prince i have all but died from the
sheer weight of my shame. you cried but no one came and the water filled your
tiny lungs. appear, my dear, and cry for me. it was six years ago today that
we laid you in your grave, your sweet young skin was shining then too.
and so tonight to celebrate i will poison myself.
another coughing, shaking fit in a bathroom that is spinning.
so i close the door and rest my head on the tile floor,
sickness and sleep turning me cold.
i am still not sure, is there some better place i could be heading towards?
where the selfishly sick and self absorbed are welcome.
i saw the future once.
i was drunk in a phone booth.
my eyes were wet and red but i could not tell what was said
and through the screams of the traffic voices carried saying
i am sorry
on a day so gray its black inside
watching churches on tv
in a coma you don't dream you just hope that someone sits with you
babies turn blue when they are ignored like the sky on summer days
before you turn and walk away it has changed you
so tonight to compensate i will poison myself
another coughing, shaking fit in a bathroom that is spinning.

Jimmy Eat World - My Sundown

I see it around me, I see it in everything.
I could be so much more than this.
I said my goodbye's this is my sundown.
I'm gonna be so much more than this.
With one hand high, you'll show them your progress.
You'll take your time, but no one cares.
No one cares.
I need you to show me the way from crazy.
I wanna be so much more than this.
With one hand high, you'll show them your progress.
You'll take your time, but no one cares.
With one hand high, you'll show them your progress.
You'll take your time, but no one cares.
No one cares.
I could be so much more than this.
No one cares.
I wanna be so much more than this.
No one cares.
I could be so much more than this.
No one cares.
I wanna be so much more than this.
No one cares.
I wanna be so much more than this.
No one cares.
I wanna be so much more than this.
Good goodbye lovely time.
Good goodbye tin sunshine.
Good goodbye I'll be fine.
Good goodbye, good goodnight.

Simple Plan--I'll Meet You There.
Now you're gone
I wonder why you left me here
I think about it on and on and on and on and on again
I know you're never coming back
I hope that you can hear me
I'm waiting to hear from you
Until I do

You're gone away
I'm left alone
A part of me is gone
And I'm not moving on
So wait for me
I know the day will come

I'll meet you there
No matter where life takes me to
I'll meet you there
And even if I need you here
I'll meet you there

I wish I could have told you
The things I kept inside
But now I guess it's just too late
So many things remind me of you
I hope that you can hear me
I miss you
This is goodbye
One last time

You're gone away
I'm left alone
A part of me is gone
And I'm not moving on
So wait for me
I know the day will come

I'll meet you there
No matter where life takes me to
I'll meet you there
and even if I need you here
I'll meet you there
(x's 2)

And where I go you'll be there with me
Forever you'll be right here with me

I'll meet you there
No matter where life takes me to
I'll meet you there
and even if I need you
I'll meet you there
(x's 2)

That song makes me cry for the single reason that it reminds me of my boyfriend, and the fact that he's leaving in not six months. :(

For that same reason, Goodbye to You -- Michelle Branch makes me sob:

Of all the things I've believed in
I just want to get it over with
Tears form behind my eyes
But I do not cry
Counting the days that pass me by

I've been searching deep down in my soul
Words that I'm hearing are starting to get old
Feels like I'm starting all over again
The last three years were just pretend
And I said,

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

I still get lost in your eyes
And it seems that I can't live a day without you
Closing my eyes and you chase my thoughts away
To a place where I am blinded by the light
But it's not right

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

Ooh, And it hurts to want everything and nothing at the same time
I want what's yours and I want what's mine
I want you
But I'm not giving in this time

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

Goodbye to you
Goodbye to everything I thought I knew
You were the one I loved
The one thing that I tried to hold on to

The one thing that I tried to hold on to....
The one thing that I tried to hold on to....
The one thing that I tried to hold on to....

And when the stars fall
I will lie awake
You're my shooting star

Just discovered this band recently....

Breaking Benjamin-Firefly

YOU MY FRIEND
YOU'RE A LOT LIKE THEM
BUT I CUT YOUR LINE
AND YOU KNOW I DID
NOW I'M LOST IN YOU
LIKE I ALWAYS DO
AND I'D DIE TO WIN
CAUSE I'M BORN TO LOSE

FIREFLY COULD YOU SHINE YOUR LIGHT
NOW I KNOW YOUR WAYS
CAUSE THERE JUST LIKE MINE
NOW I'M JUSTIFIED AS I FALL IN LINE
AND IT'S HARD TO TRY
WHEN YOUR OPEN WIDE
TAKE MY HAND
WE'LL BE OFF
AND THEN WE'LL
COME BACK AGAIN
TO A DIFFERENT LAND
NOW I LIKE THIS WAY
YOU CAN GO AWAY
IF YOU GUESS THE NAME
YOU CANNOT REPLACE

FIREFLY COULD YOU SHINE YOUR LIGHT
NOW I KNOW YOUR WAYS
CAUSE THERE JUST LIKE MINE
NOW I'M JUSTIFIED
AS I FALL IN LINE
AND IT'S HARD TO TRY
WHEN YOUR OPEN WIDE
BRING ME YOUR ENEMY'S
LAY THEM BEFORE ME
AND WALK AWAY

FIREFLY COULD YOU SHINE YOUR LIGHT
NOW I KNOW YOUR WAYS
CAUSE THERE JUST LIKE MINE
NOW I'M JUSTIFIED
AS I FALL IN LINE
AND IT'S HARD TO TRY
WHEN YOUR OPEN WIDE

FUCK YOU FIREFLY
HAVE YOU LOST YOUR LIGHT
NOW I HATE YOUR WAYS
CAUSE THERE JUST LIKE MINE
SO YOU'VE LOST MY FRIEND
SUCH A SORRY END
AND I DON'T KNOW WHY
SO I CHOKE AND SMILE

The Cure has some damn sad songs...

"i think it's dark and it looks like rain" you said
"and the wind is blowing like it's the end of the
world" you said "and it's so cold it's like the
cold if you were dead" and then you smiled for
a second.

"i think i'm old and i'm in pain" you said
"and it's all running out like it's the end of the
world" you said "and it's so cold it's like the
cold if you were dead" and then you smiled for
a second

sometimes you make me feel like i'm living at
the edge of the world like i'm living at the edge
of the world "it's just the way i smile" you said
you shatter me your grip on me a hold on me
so dull it kills you stifle me infectious sense of
hopelessness and prayers for rain i suffocate i
breathe in dirt and nowhere shines but desolate
and drab the hours all spent on killing time
again all waiting for the rain

you fracture me your hands on me a touch so
plain so stale it kills you strangle me entangle
me in hopelessness and prayers for rain i
deteriorate i live in dirt and nowhere glows but
drearily and tired the hours all spent on killing
time again all waiting for the rain
i'm so glad you came i'm so glad
you remembered to see how we're endeding our last
dance together expectant too puctual but
prettier than ever i really believed that this time
it's forever

but older than me now more constant more real
and the fur and the mouth and the innocence
turned to hair and contentment that hangs in
abesement a woman now standing where once
there was only a girl

i'm so glad you came i'm so glad you
remembered the walking through walls in the
heart of december the blindness of happiness
of falling down laughing and i really believed
that this time was forever

but christmas falls late now flatter and colder
and never as bright as when we used to fall all
this in an instant before i can kiss you a woman
now standing were once there was only a girl

i'm so glad that you came i'm so glad you
remembered to see how we're ending our last
dance together reluctantly cautiously but
prettier than ever i really believed that this time
it's forever

but christmas falls late now flatter and colder
and never as bright as when we used to fall and
even if we drink i don't think we would kiss in
the way that we did when the woman was only a
girl
kiss me goodbye pushing out before i sleep
can't you see i try swimming the same deep
water as you is hard "the shallow drowned lose
less than we" you breathe the strangest twist
upon your lips "and we shall be together..."

"kiss me goodbye bow your head and join with
me" and face pushed deep rteflections meet
the strangest twist upon your lips and
dissapear the ripples clear and laughing break
against your feet and laughing break the mirror
sweet "so we shall be together..."

"kiss me goodbye" pushing out before i sleep
it's lower now and slower now the strangest
twist upon your lips but i don't see and i dont
feel but tightly hold up silently my hands
before my fading eyes and in my eyes your
smile the very last thing before i go...

i will kiss you i will kiss you i will kiss you
forever on nights like this i will kiss you i will
kiss you and we shall be together...

Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

Right on. That's another great one.

This is also a song that's very close to me:

Pink Floyd
(Sorrow)
[lyrics]
I'd add to the Pink Floyd list If.

If I were a swan, I'd be gone
If I were a train, I'd be late
And if I were a good man,
I'd talk with you more often than I do
If I were to sleep, I could dream
If I were afraid, I could hide
If I go insane, please don't put
Your wires in my brain
If I were the moon, I'd be cool
If I were a book, I would bend
If I were a good man, I'd understand
The spaces between friends
If I were alone, I would cry
And if I were with you, I'd be home and dry
And if I go insane,
Will you still let me join in the game?
If I were a swan, I'd be gone
If I were a train, I'd be late again
If I were a good man,
I'd talk with you more often than I do

But really, (I'm going to screw up the name) Song With Every Line is Filled with Sorrow or something like that is as advertised.

And the saddest thing I've ever heard is Lonely Woman by Ornette Coleman.

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

Of our elaborate plans, the end
Of everything that stands, the end
No safety or surprise, the end
I'll never look into your eyes...again

Can you picture what will be
So limitless and free
Desperately in need...of some...stranger's hand
In a...desperate land

Lost in a Roman...wilderness of pain
And all the children are insane
All the children are insane
Waiting for the summer rain, yeah

There's danger on the edge of town
Ride the King's highway, baby
Weird scenes inside the gold mine
Ride the highway west, baby

Ride the snake, ride the snake
To the lake, the ancient lake, baby
The snake is long, seven miles
Ride the snake...he's old, and his skin is cold

The west is the best
The west is the best
Get here, and we'll do the rest

The blue bus is callin' us
The blue bus is callin' us
Driver, where you taken' us

The killer awoke before dawn, he put his boots on
He took a face from the ancient gallery
And he walked on down the hall
He went into the room where his sister lived, and...then he
Paid a visit to his brother, and then he
He walked on down the hall, and
And he came to a door...and he looked inside
Father, yes son, I want to kill you
Mother...I want to...fuck you

C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
C'mon baby, take a chance with us
And meet me at the back of the blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
On a blue bus
Doin' a blue rock
C'mon, yeah

Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill, kill

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

It hurts to set you free
But you'll never follow me
The end of laughter and soft lies
The end of nights we tried to die

This is the end

Mmmm, in a slight (huge!) departure from the convention of this thread, I am going to suggest some classical music. Requiems are generally very sad pieces of music, and Stabat Maters I would guess at also being a good bet, although I haven't heard enough to be sure.

Moonlight Sonata, and Adiago for Strings would both suit this thread as far as classical pieces go... and both of them are excellent as well!

I could also include the scores of several movies, starting with the theme from 'The Last of the Mohicans'

"Everybody Hurts" by REM
When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,
When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on
Don't let yourself go, 'cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes
Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along
When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)
If you feel like letting go, (hold on)
When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on
'Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends
Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand
If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone
If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,
When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on
Well, everybody hurts sometimes,
Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes
And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Everybody hurts. You are not alone

The Thunder Rolls - Garth Brooks

The Foggy Dew - Irish trad.
'Twas down the glen one Easter morn
To a city fair rode I.
When Ireland's line of marching men
In squadrons passed me by.
No pipe did hum, no battle drum
Did sound its dread tattoo
But the Angelus bell o'er the Liffey's swell
Rang out in the foggy dew.

Right proudly high over Dublin town
They flung out a flag of war.
'Twas better to die 'neath an Irish sky
Than at Suvla or Sud el Bar.
And from the plains of Royal Meath
Strong men came hurrying through;
While Britannia's sons with their long-range guns
Sailed in through the foggy dew.

'Twas England bade our Wild Geese go
That small nations might be free
But their lonely graves are by Suvla's waves
or the fringe of the grey North Sea
Oh had they died by Pearse's side,
or had fought with Cathal Brugha
Their graves we'd keep where the Fenians sleep,
'neath the shroud of the Foggy Dew.

But the bravest fell, and the requiem bell
Rang mournfully and clear
For those who died that Eastertide
In the springing of the year
And the world did gaze, with deep amaze,
At those fearless men and true
Who bore the fight that freedom's light
Might shine through the Foggy Dew.

Ah, back through the glen I rode again,
And my heart with grief was sore
For I parted then with valiant men
Whom I never shall see more
But to and fro in my dreams I go
And I'd kneel and pray for you
For slavery fled, O glorious dead,
When you fell in the Foggy Dew.

There Were Roses- Tommy Sands
My song for you this evening, it's not to make you sad
Nor for adding to the sorrows of our troubled northern land,
But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind
I'll tell you of two friends one time who were both good friends of mine.

Isaac Scott from Banagh, he lived just across the fields,
A great man for the music and the dancing and the reels.
MacDonald came from South Armagh to court young Alice fair,
And we'd often meet on the Ryan Road and the laughter filled the air.

There were roses, roses
There were roses
And the tears of the people
Ran together

Now Isaac, he was Protestant, and Sean was Catholic born,
Though it never made a difference for the friendship, it was strong.
And sometimes in the evening when we heard the sound of drums
We said, "It won't divide us. We always will be one.''

For the ground our fathers plowed in, the soil, it is the same,
And the places where we say our prayers have just got different names.
We talked about the friends who died, and we hoped there'd be no more.
It's little then we realized the tragedy in store.

It was on a Sunday morning when the awful news came round.
Another killing has been done just outside Newry Town.
We knew that Isaac danced up there, we knew he liked the band.
When we heard that he was dead we just could not understand.

We gathered at the graveside on that cold and rainy day,
And the minster he closed his eyes and for no revenge he prayed.
All all of us who knew him from along the Ryan Road,
We bowed our heads and said a prayer for the resting of his soul.

Now fear, it filled the countryside. There was fear in every home
When late one night a car came prowling round the Ryan Road.
A Catholic would be killed tonight to even up the score.
"Oh, Christ! It's young MacDonald that they've taken from the door.''

"Isaac was my friend,'' he cried. He begged them with his tears,
But centuries of hatred have ears that cannot hear.
An eye for an eye was all that filled their minds
And another eye for another eye till everyone is blind.

I don't know where the moral is or where this song should end,
But I wondered just how many wars are fought between good friends.
And those who give the orders are not the ones to die.
It's Scott and MacDonald and the likes of you and I.

There were roses, roses
There were roses

If Tomorrow Never Comes
(Garth Brooks)

Sometimes late at night
I lie awake and watch her sleeping
She's lost in peaceful dreams
So I turn out the lights and lay there in the dark
And a thought crosses my mind
If I never wake up in the morning
Would she ever doubt the way I feel
About her in my heart

(chorus)

If tomorrow never comes
Will she know how much I loved her
Did I try in every way to show her every day
That she's my only one
And if my time on earth were through
She must face this world without me
Is the love I gave her in the past
Gonna be enough to last
If tomorrow never comes

'Cause I've lost loved ones in my life
Who never knew how much I loved them
Now I live with the regret
That my true feelings for them never were revealed
So I made a promise to myself
To say each day how much she means to me
And avoid that circumstance
Where there's no second chance to tell her how I feel

*chorus*

So tell that someone that you love
Just what you're thinking of
If tomorrow never comes

Her Majesty - Cut Me

If I woke you up
Could we have a go again
I'll try to get things right
this time

Where did I go wrong
Did you know this all along
You know I can't go on
without

Please hear me out
Forget all your doubts
Hey! You're shutting me out
Don't you know that's what this means
Whatever you dreamed it's not for the better

I can't let go
And you know just what I mean
And if you cut me out you might as well cut me

And there'll be no hope
For the boy who's lost his soul
There's not enough rope to pull ashore

Please hear me out
Forget all your doubts
Hey! You're shutting me out
Don't you know that's what this means
These webs that we weave are not for the bitter

Still I can't let go
And you know just what I mean
And if you cut me out you might as well cut me

And there'll be no hope
For the boy who's lost his soul
There's not enough rope to pull ashore

And there'll be no hope
For the boy who's lost his soul
Just give me enough rope

Herald's Lament
song and lyrics by Mercedes Lackey

A hand to aid along the road
A laugh to lighten any load
A place to bring a burdened heart
Or heal the ache of sorrows dart
Who'd willingly share in joy or tears
And help to ease the darkest fears
Or my soul like his own defend
All because he was my friend.

No grave could hold so free a soul
I see him in the frisking foal
I hear his laughter on the breeze
That stirs the very tops of trees
He flies with Eagle's on the wing
He is the song that night birds sing
Death never dared him captive keep
He lies not there, he does not sleep.

But there is silence at my side
That haunts the place he used to ride
And my companion can't allay
The loss I have sustained this day
How bleak the future now has grown
Since I must face it all alone
My road is weary, dark and steep
It is for myself I weep.

BloodTears

When I cut, it is as deep as my pain
wrenching
splitting
i await my lover's bloody kisses
singing in the dark church
they will miss me so when i am gone
if only i could live in a castle
Eyes closed for the final time, the soul released
uncaring
no solace for the unforgiven
the christians are awful because they all are judgmental
endless bleak night

(WolfStar Blackheart)

And also, I find this one particularly inspiring!

Sanguine Kiss

I cannot escape this hurt and anger
ripping
thundering
I wish only for death
I write in inks of doom
my mascara cannot hide the tears in my eyes
if only i could live in a castle
Hopes forgotten, dreams untouched, the final end
i really like blood
my soul is like poison
everything and everyone is below me
endless life in the darkness

Already mentioned,
The Dance, by Garth Brooks
Freebird, by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Dust in the Wind, by Kansas

I have to contribute these to the list:
Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd)
Hello.
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone home?

Come on, now.
I hear you’re feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.

Relax.
I need some information first.
Just the basic facts:
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can’t explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.

Ok.
Just a little pinprick. [ping]
There’ll be no more --aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.

Can you stand up?
I do believe it’s working. good.
That’ll keep you going for the show.
Come on it’s time to go.

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen)
Is this the real life-
Is this just fantasy-
Caught in a landslide-
No escape from reality-
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see-
I’m just a poor boy,i need no sympathy-
Because I’m easy come,easy go,
A little high,little low,
Anyway the wind blows, doesn’t really matter to me,
To me

Mama,just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger,now he’s dead,
Mama,life had just begun,
But now I’ve gone and thrown it all away-
Mama ooo,
Didn’t mean to make you cry-
If I’m not back again this time tomorrow-
Carry on,carry on,as if nothing really matters-

Too late,my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine-
Body’s aching all the time,
Goodbye everybody-I’ve got to go-
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth-
Mama ooo- (any way the wind blows)
I don’t want to die,
I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all-

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche, scaramouche will you do the fandango-
Thunderbolt and lightning-very very frightening me-
Galileo,galileo,
Galileo galileo
Galileo figaro-magnifico-
But I’m just a poor boy and nobody loves me-
He’s just a poor boy from a poor family-
Spare him his life from this monstrosity-
Easy come easy go-,will you let me go-
Bismillah! no-,we will not let you go-let him go-
Bismillah! we will not let you go-let him go
Bismillah! we will not let you go-let me go
Will not let you go-let me go
Will not let you go let me go
No,no,no,no,no,no,no-
Mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go-
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me,for me,for me-

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye-
So you think you can love me and leave me to die-
Oh baby-can’t do this to me baby-
Just gotta get out-just gotta get right outta here-

Nothing really matters,
Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters-,nothing really matters to me,

Any way the wind blows....

A lot of Renaissance songs, including
from Scheherezade
THE VULTURES FLY HIGH

While in the streets of all our fears
They reign supreme as orders go
They are the last to have their say
And last to know it doesn't matter how you try
It doesn't matter what you say
They always watch with hollow eyes
To put you down they always find a way to criticise

Chorus I:

The vultures fly high
They circle over us all
The vultures fly high
I'll take your hand if you fall

All those who sheltered in their smile
Are scattered here from yesterday
And if the weak are left behind
They have to pay and though you haven't much to give
You know they take it, yours and mine
Sometimes it looks as though we lose
But then in time the finger points at them
The next in line

Repeat Chorus I

[Instrumental break]

Chorus II:

The vultures fly high
They circle over us all
The lonely sigh
I'll take your hand if you fall

Repeat Chorus II twice

OCEAN GYPSY LYRICS

Tried to take it all away
Learn her freedom just inside a day
And find her soul
To find their fears allayed

Tried to make her love their own
They took her love they left her there
They gave her nothing back
That she would want to own

Gold and silver rings and stones
Dances slowly of the moon
No-one else can know
She stands alone

Sleeping dreams will reach for her
She cannot say the words they need
She knows she’s alone
And she is free

Chorus:

Ocean gypsy of the moon
The sun has made a thousand nights
For you to hold
Ocean gypsy where are you
The shadows followed by the stars
Have turned to gold, turned to gold

Then she met a hollow soul
Filled him with her light
And was consoled she was the moon
And he, the sun was gold

Eyes were blinded with his light
The sun she gave
Reflected back the night
The moon was waning almost out of sight

Softly ocean gypsy calls
Silence holds the stars awhile
They smile sadly
For her where she falls

Just the time before the dawn
The sea is hushed
The ocean calls her
Day has taken her and now she’s gone

Chorus

No-one noticed when she died
Ocean gypsy shackled to the tide
The ebbing waves were turning
Spreading wide

Something gone within her eyes
Her fingers lifeless stroke the sand
Her battered soul was lost
She was abandoned

Silken threads like wings still shine
Winds take pleasure still make patterns
In her lovely hair
So dark and fine

Stands on high beneath the seas
Cries no more
Her tears have dried
Oceans weep for her, the ocean sighs

Chorus
