Limewire
Bittorrent (find the app you like best)

Note: Sharing copywriten files and the like is against the law in most places. I am not responsible if you choose to use the suggested software for that purpose.

I like Ares too, I use Ares, SoulSeek, KLite and WinMX - though I use Ares the most for the broad user base. :)

Ah, but that's what the proxy setting is for! Pick an anonymous proxy, such as the Mexican or Turkish proxies, and your IP address will be untraceable. They can't prosecute what they can't find. The only problem is some websites will pop up in Turkish.

A few anon proxies, in the format IPaddress:Port#

I'd tell ya but I'm currently not a liberty to do so as both the RIAA and the MPAA want me dead.

(Banging on the door)

RIAA Officer: Open up! We know you're in there!

Bolol: You'll never take me alive bitch! (Grabs MAC-10)

PS: I heard somewhere that people can no longer be prosecuted for using file-sharing programs. Is this true?

Bittorrent. And you're perfectly safe downloading with it, if you only download stuff that's not on the RIAA list. If I can find a link for it, I'll post it (or someone else could do the same, if they know it?).

I'm big on the Kazaa Lite Revolutions. It's great, all the benifits of the Fasttrack network without all the BS of Kazaa or Kazaa Lite. Basically the program is the next evolution of Kazaa Lite K++, and as Kazaa is currently still trying to stomp out K++, Revolutions is doing great. Also it gives you a constant PL of 1000 and blocks the IPs of known RIAA head hunters. Hard to find a download, but if you want one, try google.

I use K++ for most things, but if you want to ftp then Filezilla is a good one

Of those I have used, I prefer eMule. Just connect to a good eD2K server & Kad, and you will be able to find a lot of stuff. It's especially good for finding large files, like games and movies, and pretty good for music and programs. The download speed can be pretty bad good for files with low amounts of sources however.

I use Soulseek for non-RIAA music... it's really only good for music-sharing, not much else.

I use BitTorrent for just about everything else... that's legal, that is. Of course. Ahem.

One of my younger cousins got busted by the RIAA for downloading about 7 movies. I'm wondering what exactly is going to happen to him, as it's been about a month and a half since I heard about it and nothing more has happened.

DC++. It's an awesome program, if you share enough to get into the better servers....
And the RIAA aren't permitted to even enter most of the hubs, seeing as Bill Clinton ratified the Internet Privacy Act in 1995. By entering the hub, the RIAA is in breach of code 431.322.12. And if they can't enter, they can't search.

DC++ is only worth getting if you a) have broadband, and b) can share more than about 10 gb.

That means absolutely nothing. They can enter and they DO enter these hubs. Remember all those DC hubs that were shut down recently? They all had that message.

But I agree that DC++ is a good way to share. About a gazillion times better than Kazaa Lite and many others that has been recommended in this thread.

The best file sharing program for newbies though is BitTorrent, since it's easy to use, you don't have to actively search for things you want, it's fast and you're pretty much guaranteed that what you download works.

Exeem! (http://www.exeem.com)

Don't use Exeem, it installs spyware on your pc. You could get the light client (google it), that appears to be ok, although I haven't used it.

For mp3's I use Soulseek, and for torrents I use G3Torrent (http://g3torrent.sourceforge.net/).

Downloading is perfectly legal in the US. Uploading, however, is illegal.

Unless you only upload things without copyright (I assume). I distribute quite a few linuxiso's and open source programs through filesharing programmes like limewire e.g. - but thats done under Dutch law.
Downloading is also perfectly legal here. Of course, I consider it normal to also *buy* stuff from artists I like. They need food just like you and me.

Can't say I'm too impressed with Shareaza. Can be good sometimes, but other times too slow.
Also I'm anal retentive like putting all the correct info into the Metadata page (does help to keep track of what I've downloaded). Unfortunately, if you move the file into a new directory (even a sub-directory of the directory Shareaza saves to), Shareaza restores all info to the original downloaded settings and you have to go through it all again.

WinMX for me!

I don't do much downloading as modems aren't the best way to download big files.
