Who likes beer? Why?

This poll was inspired by a little discussion in the "Beer" thread. The question is whether people drink beer for its alcohol content or for the other qualities this delightful beverage has.

I like beer alot.
It's refreshing on a hot day. It comes in many different flavors, hoppy and bitter, malty and sweet, rich and full bodied, or smooth and refreshing. Plus it has alcohol in it, which is a big plus.

I drink beer because it is good and I can get drunk if need be.

Because I like the taste, or maybe I'm just kidding myself because I was brought up to believe that is the only reason to drink it.

It's not my favorite type of alcohol, but pitchers split with friends are a hell of a lot cheaper than doing shots or having mixed drinks all night, so that's why my friends & I drink it.

Beer tastes good. And if it doesn't i wouldn't drink it. :p

Hmm. I haven't acquired the taste for beer to be honest neither do i need the buzz of alcohol in my blood.

And I don't like getting drunk or take too much alcohol. I'm the type when drink too much I get sleepy.

Hence, I go for mixes just for the taste usually. Midori-vodka's nice. :p Or rum-coke.

Beer tastes like sewage. I can't picture liking it. And I would hardly say it's an "acquired taste" either - you can't learn to like something that repulsive.

That said, I am a teetotaler, and it's not for moral or religious reasons. I don't consider myself religious or a moralist of any sort.

I like beer because, living in a Freshman dormitory, I can purchase the stuff after a two minute walk and sell it at a 50% profit, and have people thank me for it.

I don't like beer. Don't like it taste. I'll take some maybe in a very hot day, but only maybe. The only alcoholical drink I like (love) is wine, cheap, delitious, and good for your health

By the way, Santa Barbara, my gentle interlocutor and the inspiration for this thread, says that currently nine of you are deluded liars who don't know why you like beer.

And MOST people "don't like beer except for the alcohol."

By the way, people lie on their polls - and yes, people ARE deluded, the TRUTH about what people like is not always what they SAY or VOTE.

So SB knows why you like beer better than y'all yourselves. Ain't that something?

Sorry, I never claimed "alcoholic content is all that counts," so your stupid misinterpretation of my point - besides being just an elaborate ad populus argument of fallacy - is totally irrelevant. And a strawman too.

Nice try though.

"IMO the only time alcoholic beverages were not about gaining effects of alcohol intoxication was in the medieval ages when ales were healthier sources of water than rivers or wells."

Is that the strawman you're talking about?

You also went on to refer to anybody who expressed an opinion about a favorite beer as elitist or "a snob." Which was kind of grating, though not so grating as being told to "suck your balls." And even that wasn't quite so grating as being told why my tastes are the result of a delusion. Or being called a "liar."

I agree. It's a great thirst quencher in general and just tastes good! I like sampling loads of different varieties from all over the place, but at the end of the day, a nice cool pint of a 'standard' beer is just what one needs sometimes.

I love the taste of beer, and drink it mainly for that reason (Yes also to get drunk, but if i wanted to get drunk fast i'd get some absinthe). Non-alcoholic beer however, does not have anything like the same taste and is repulsive.

Beer does indeed taste rank, but you do start to like it when you drink it purely for the alcohol (when you're about 13/14), and then find you actually rather like it after a few years. Odd, really.

I started to drink beer when I was 15-16. I didn't like it then.
After few years I get used to it and then (thank God) started to like it.
So first it was for the alcohol, but nowadays it's f*** good.

If alcohol content is all that counts, why would you drink beer, sure it's only 5% at most!

I don't like most beer, but I do like some, such as a Guinness.

My fav drink though is good ol' vodka 'n' orange.

Ha. Lumping together tee-totalers and hardcore alcoholics....er, I mean 'liquer conniseurs' (sp?). I'm thinking that they are actually one and the same, but the apparent tee-totalers hide it better

For God Love's Man, He made beer~

Its not in the bible, but it Should be.. Beer is nice, and I drink one or two a day, just to kick back before I start on my house hold stuff after school/work.

But I'm more into the Ciders right now, like StrongBow, and WoodChuk.. thats some nice beer.. and also I homebrew alot of it too..

So for $20 you can brew 6 gl of your fav. beer.. God Bless America! :)

I've had barleywine style beers that were 13%. Most of my favorite beers exceed 6%

I'm actually not that crazy about the taste of beer.. i drink it more for its physiological effects.

and for me... it's easier to control the buzz with beer than it is with alcohol... because with beer i can gradually feel myself getting buzzed/drunk. with alcohol, it's like i'm on a plateau and feeling fine through seemingly 4 or 5 drinks and then BAM i've fallen off the cliff.

Just a thought, by 'Beer' are you including lager in that heading or just bitter? I like lager, but still am not too keen on bitter...

I don't know about that. I hated beer for years until I started going to a bar with a friend of mine that sold bottles 3 for the price of 2 one night a week and chicken wings covered in really spicy barbecue sauce.

For the first couple of weeks I'd taste the wings then I couldn't taste the beer, then having tasted the beer meant I couldn't taste the heavily spiced sauce. Between the two I could tolerate them, either one by itself was awful.

Then one day the beer came and a half an hour later I finished my second beer, the untouched chicken wings had gotten cold, and I turned on my friend "you turned me into a beer drinker you bastard!"

I still prefer a sweet wine though.

My grandmother never drank. She got alzheimers, liver cancer, and died. Everybody gets sick. Everybody dies. Might as well do what you like with the time you have.

"...I like beer. it makes me a jolly good fellow
I like beer. it helps me unwind and sometimes it makes me feel mellow (makes him feel mellow)
Whiskey’s too rough, champagne costs too much, vodka puts my mouth in gear
This little refrain should help me explain as a matter of fact I like beer

On a lighter note:

Just a thought, by 'Beer' are you including lager in that heading or just bitter? I like lager, but still am not too keen on bitter...

I meant it in the contemporary, American sense, where beer includes lagers and ales and pretty much anything based on malt and hops. Even, shudder to think, B-to-the-E and Tequiza.

Mmmm Beer.

Started on the usual cheap studenty beers, now they all taste like horse piss and I'll go for a Stella, Heineken or Steinlager.

Nothing can possibly beat beer and a BBQ. Or beer after a long days work. Or beer with mates to catch up.

*Raises beer mug* Cheers. *clink*

"Ooooooooooooh,
What is the malted liquor,
what gets you drunker quicker,
what comes in bottles or in cans (BEER!!!)
Cant get enough of it,
how i really love it,
Makes me think i'm a man (BEER!!!)
I'd like to kiss and hug it,
But i'd rather chug it,
Fills my belly up to here (BEER!!!)
I could really use a,
I could not refuse a,
Beer, or a Beer, or a BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!"

Consuming anything to excess is dangerous, but for thousands of years people have been drinking alcohol to the exclusion of almost everything else. It is only within the last hundred years or so that tap water became a viable alternative. Until then "fresh" water was often full of diseases and the only way to make it potable was to brew alcohol in it to kill the bacteria and parasites (people didn't know about boiling back then).

While it's true that we don't need to do that for the same reason anymore the fact is that we've adapted. Alcohol relaxes the blood vessels making it easier for your heart to pump blood. Consuming about 2 oz. of alcohol per day seems be be about the optimum for most humans. Much more than that and the damage to the nervous system and liver starts to cancel out benifits to the circulatory system. Also, drinking 20 oz on the weekend does not cancel out drinking nothing all week.
