Yeah, so I'm a giant dork and went out and bought the $300 Imperial Star Destroyer Lego Set. It's 3,100 pieces, and is three feet by two feet by 18 inches. Took me about 8 hours to build. My fingertips were literally purple and swolen by the time I finished. :) Check it out!

That's one heck of a Star Destroyer...wish I had money like that to burn when I was 10 years old.

On the other hand, I am an incurable Star Wars geek, so if I had money to burn, I would still probably buy it.

Well, it was a birthday present, so I didn't really spend my own money as much as I spent money given to me for my birthday. And my brother went in and got them to give him a military discount of $50 off as his "present" to me.

The funny thing is that I really don't much care for Star Wars. I've loved Legos my whole life, and this is the biggest set they've ever made. It was like a personal challenge. :)

That must be the ideal life...grow up building legos (check) even in high school (no check I'm afraid), then getting a job in Microsoft (or Boeing) and doing the same thing for the rest of your life. *sigh*

Thing about guys...you can grow up and still play with toys.

I wish I were still in high school. And I would love a job that involved playing with Legos!

I'm not dissing your Star Destroyer...

But I think I will always pine for the days when Lego came in basic set pieces, while you could buy a specific set to build something (usually with the instructions on the inside) they were the same pieces you find in any other set (just with the correct number of bits for whatever was on the box).

I went shopping a few months ago and thought it was about time to buy some lego for my son. To my dismay all the lego these days appears to be designed specifically to build whatever object is in the box and nothing else!

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm guessing all the stuff you used to build that Star Destroyer couldn't easily be used to build something else?

Actually, there were only two pieces unique to the set. The rest are regularly included in other sets.

So true...I miss the days in my childhood when each Lego set had a classical theme with completely interchangeable blocks...

I loved the space lego sets... a friend in primary school had a huge collection of bits. We used to spend HOURS just clicking bits together to see what cool spaceships we could make.

I used to make foot long planes and Cars.

I loved the Pirates and Port Royale thing that was grand.

Hey!

There's some blue. And there's red and black and blue on the inside.

Besides, gluing it together would require taking it completely apart and putting it all back together.

nope just paint the outside.

Well it's hollow, so it could cave in on itself. Or pieces on the inside could break off. And that would be a huge pain.

Darth Vader is teeny-tiny, itty-bitty compared to that thing. He's like a speck of dust.

They do sell a TIE-fighter set that you can put a little mini Darth Vader guy into. My brother has the Darth Vader guy. It's cool.

I had lots of lego sets, but I built them up into forts and stacked the lego soldiers and such on the walls and then picked them off one by one with my air rifle when I was about 10 years old. This ruined most of them as the pieces were crushed in by the BBs.

After that, I killed all my army men by taking their heads off with my BB gun. Then I got really bored and shot up boxes of 50 year old glasswares, then I just shot up the wall after that.

Ah, happy times...
