Contest Over!

Final results:

Neo-Anarchists 21 (Possibly 20 as Vittos withdrew his vote, which was for NA)
Keruvalia 9
FairyTInkArisen 7 (possibly 8, but I don't know if the "go Tink!" post was a vote or just a cheerleader)

Eutrusca did get 16 votes, but he dropped himself from the running.

Congratulations, Neo! You can now add another trophy to your fireplace. :)

this was hard vote. i went away for the weekend, and i came back to this!!
before i vote, let me make a little speechthing.
Neo is definitley the nicest person i have met. she is a sarcastic, goofy, sensitive intelligent HONEST poster. she also changed my opinion and thoughts on a very important issue that i had struggled with for a long time. i really truly look forward to reading every post she writes.
Keruvalia- not only is he an awesome LONG HAIRED rocker musician daddy, he also has a tattoo i would pay money to see. no, really, he is very smart, and wonderfully humerous. he also defends his beliefs staunchly, no matter how unpopular they are with certain members. it would be easy for him to hate me, but , as i can so far tell, he doesnt.
but MY VOTE MUST GO EUTRUSCA. not only is he the oldest, wisest, and most thought out person i have seen on the forum, he has lived more life than any of us, but never uses that against people. he chooses to instead apply his experiences and views in lesson form. he has some of the best jokes, esp. when you realize they are made by a 60 plus year old man. just when i think they should start euthanizing all old people because they are useless, along comes an Eutrusca post, and i relax a little.

i was kidding, you know, the last part. no one freak out.

My vote has to go - out of this group - to Neo-Anarchists. IT was a tough choice, and I respect the honourable author of this thread and the fun girl - I had to make a tough choice.

Frankly, Eutrusca was not ever in the running for me as - despite the description noted - I have far too often encountered him to respond in political debates with snide personal attacks. While I respect his opinions that tactic has always struck me as unworthy.

Now, now Zooke, Zeppistan debates only with facts. Eutrusca debates with his emotions, that is no secret to any of us who debate or follow debates. Zeppistan is not in this. Eutrusca, for the same reasons as given in the 4th round. I've never noticed any 'snide personal attacks' from him - however, I admit that I'm not here often enough to read everything that goes on. Still, from what I have seen of him, I've found him to be an intelligent and interesting debater and therefore I respect him; and I can only really comment from these personal experiences.

Good luck everyone :)

I just don't see why it is necessary to do more than vote...why was there a need to trash one of the candidates? Give all of the reasons you can possibly think of to show that your favorite candidate is the right choice, but to single out one candidate and publically criticize him, is snide and unworthy. Anyway, this isn't the time or place to discuss this. It's enough to say that I don't have the same concept of appropriate behavior. Do I need to mention what was said to a young lady on here that upset her so much...and who said it?

He was just giving his honest opinion, which I agree with, and so do the many people who have sent me TG's who refuse to take part in this contest because he's in it. To each their own I suppose. Many people have given their reasons for voting or not voting the way they did.

Any way, Zep is more than able to back up what he says. I don't think I need to defend his comments beyond this. I know he is more than able to do it himself.

To not participate because they don't like one or some of the candidates is a defeatist attitude. I suspect his politics and military background weighs heavily against him in yours and your NS buddies' eyes. I don't have time to read all of the posts on here right now, so I will expand my rebuff to all to whom it applies. Why is it necessary to make negative comments about a candidate when you could spend your time by making positive statements about someone else?

Eutrusca: A genuinely nice man. A Veteran of the United States Army and a strong voice for NS Conservatives without being fanatical. He always has a kind word for everyone he meets and he is often seen as the perennial NS grandfather. His advice comes from his years of wisdom, but his years have not turned him into an "old blowhard".

Mmkay ... can we not argue this here?

Zeppistan didn't say anything remotely disrespectful concerning Eutrusca and don't start lumping in the whole "NS buddies" thing. I happen to be a combat veteran of the US Army as well, but mine and Eut's politics are rather different. So we can leave the whole Vet thing out of it as well.

At any rate, go argue in your own thread.

Do I need to mention what was said to a young lady on here that upset her so much...and who said it?

Zooke, I did not "trash" anyone. I simply expressed the reason why someone did not get my vote as opposed to those who did. And that has nothing to do with his politics and/or military background as I am very proud of the serving members of my family and I hold various debating opponents here in high regard. Indeed, at this point it seems to be YOU who is flinging muck around and defending him based on your own political afiliation.

Had I intended to vote the person whose politics most closely match mine I would have probably gone with Kuruvalia. I didn't.

Now I don't have time to go back to find a long list of the posts that Eutrusca has made that have led me to my opinion right now - I'm at work. But I do recall one from yesterdayhere (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=399810&page=5) where I was having a very polite exchange with Whispering Legs (someone who's political views are even further from mine than Eutrusca's), and he felt it appropriate to jump in the middle of our conversation simply to level a snide remark at me which I found abhorent in that it implied that I actually took personal pleasure from the ongoing death and destruction in Iraq. It added nothing to the subject at hand - and was clearly injected only for personal reasons.

That sort of thing sums up my recent discourse with this poster and why I do not rank them at the top of my respect list. And it was clearly not done as you implied as "<a> response to snide personal attacks in a way that his debate opponent is most likely to be able to understand" as clearly the conversation was going along very politely without him as a participant at that point. And this was a very mild example of a trend I have found with him lately - it was just the most recent example that I knew where to find it.

Anyway - I've said my peace and the thread author has asked that this matter be dropped. I just could not let your assertions as to my motives and character rest without a proper response.

No, it was only two. First one was a complete farse. Blind voting, please.

As for this one, I was only defending what my husband said. I didn't even start it..and there was the thing with Tink, which we have more than settled.

No, I'm not like this with Zeppistan because he is fair, the most respected person in my life. A great person, a loving father and the best husband a woman could ever want.

Now, now Zooke, Zeppistan debates only with facts. Eutrusca debates with his emotions, that is no secret to any of us who debate or follow debates. Zeppistan is not in this. But don't be insulting my husband when he points out a fact that more than one of us have noticed from Eutrusca time and again. Zep was only being honest.
You're bashing Eutrusca after voting for Tink in the previous round? Come on, wtf?

Eutrusca is a great poster. I don't think he's one of the best debaters here, and I am often in conflict with him. He is intelligent, friendly, and has a sense of humour.

On a vote like this that is meant to be ENTERTAINING, you should be extolling the virtues of the candidate of your choice. "Badmouthing" a candidate, even if it's truthful is IMO just plain rude.

I have my issues with one or more of the candidates. That's why I picked None of the Above. I'm not going to subject this contest to my personal opinions of any of the candidates.

I have no problems with his opinions, I've just seen him lose more than once in a debate to Zeppistan and resort to personal attacks, not very mature. That's all I'm saying. It's my husband who brought it up, take it up with him. I am just agreeing that I've seen the same thing more than once when he loses a debate.

Steph, you know that I love you, but I feel that it's quite relevant to point out the fact that what youre doing falls short of being mature either.

Its quite alright not to have respect for someone, but quite another to feel it nessecary to single that one person out and declare openly why. Theres no purpose in it other than to ruffle feathers.

Perhaps I'm guilty of doling out too much diplomacy when it comes to these things, and this is just an opinion... but I feel it's one that has been validated time and time again herein. So call it cliche if you must, but if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. You are of course entitled to your opinions, and from time to time you may be called upon for them - but on a personal level shouldn't they be kept to yourself?

I am sure that even Eutrusca will tell you that he argues on emotion with some issues. *cough*Kerry*cough* But he also is very respectable in the fact he is kind to all posters, usually, and he has firm, respectable convictions that he stands by and supports.

Well as far as debating issues with emotion....how is that wrong? If we sat here and debated things based on the facts alone-whats the point? Thats not debate. Thats a regurgitation of facts. Debate relies on opinions sometimes much more than it does facts. In fact, thats one of the problems with our government, they dont have any(or much) passion about anything. Get excited, get mad, get frustrated.....whatever moves you is likely to provoke you to get something done. We can sit here and volly statistics back and forth all day long. Show me someone who feels passionately about their opinions .......... that is something well deserving of respect.

Debating out of emotion is a faulty form of debating. Not that it can't accomplish something, but it is a very inefficient way of doing it, and can lead to faulty conclusions.

Debating should be about making statements and supporting them through facts and logical deductions until a definitive conclusion is reached. Emotion can throw a very, very large wrench into the deal.

So if I were to lobby for the protection of children, say in regards to abuse and neglect, I should present my case based soley on the %'s of children who were abused over the past few years? Throw in which states that occured in and then ask the government to get riled up about it and allocate several million dollars so that the appropriate number of social service workers can be hired and have a caseload of 10 instead of 50.
I think I might get more accomplished if I presented my case with a clear expression of my desire to help children. By showing them specific cases that detail what kinds of abuse are going on. By directly appealing to their human side, or emotions, if you will, so that they might actually go back to their conference room and discuss the two year old boy whos mom put him on top of the stove while it was on. Or the 10 year old who was raped and beaten by her moms boyfriend and then her wounds sewn up with fishing line by him. Or the two 14 year olds who were starved so badly that they weigh 36 and 38 pounds.Maybe, just maybe....if they got emotional about those particular facts.....they'd vote to appropriate the money.

Or I could just leave emotion out and hope my stats were enough to convince them.

Who writes the rulebook of debate anyway? I'm not talking about jumping up and down and yelling 'youre wrong, I'm right!!" at anyone. I'm simply saying that how we feel about a subject is very important. Its what seperates the differences we have in the first place. What is the point of debating an issue if you dont have some sort of fire inside about it? Debate should produce a resolution or at a minimum.....spark consideration and thoughts about the subject matter.

Another thing to note is that you presented actual cases of child abuse. Sympathy is another form of reason, and while you may not make any progress as to what to do about child abuse, you certainly will prove that child abuse is a horrible thing.

Right...because I said that opinions/emotion in addition to facts. Not just pure emotion running wild. If sympathy is what I need to invoke to achieve the results I previously mentioned.....then so be it. And even if all I accomplish is making more people aware of whats going on with the abuse of children, then perhaps somehow, be it directly or indirectly.... a child somewhere might be removed from a harmful situation before its too late.

But you and SD are smart guys, you know what I' saying here. I guess its that passion and emotion are what leads us to get involved in a debate in the first place. Then perhaps a more formal design of expression is applied.

Fair enough, but I remember the days when a contest was on it's merit, back when Zeppistan won the best debater on this site. I think he's proven it time and time again. But there is some thing seriously wrong when people get voted off the island like, Zeppistan, Bottle, for heck's sake even Cog. Most respected? That should mean some thing, at least it does where I come from. I know it's just an Internet poll, of people willing to take part, because my telegram box was full of people saying WTF? So many got tossed when they were and are the most respected, it all comes down to a popularity contest of the willing. Best debater =/= Most respected

thats not what alot of people are basing this on

its respect for the person, for what they have done, for how they have stuck to beliefs etc

its stuff like that - not whether or not someone is a good debater, or whether or not they have been warned...

I actually am not happy with all the people who refused to take part because he was nominated. They could of killed him in the water if they had.

So, at the end of the day, maybe he'll win.. I say win loosely.. but he is by no means even close to the most respected player on these forums, nor am I.

You are obviously upset about the way others have chosen to vote because they do not agree with your opinions of certain nominees. I'm sure you have your reasons for feeling the way you do. You have 6000 + more post experience and interaction with this group than I, but in my time here, I've formed my own opinions of who is and who is not respectable,, likeable, loveable, funny, whatever. Just as the other members have. If you feel differently than we do, thats splendid....youre entitled. But you do not have to be so accusatory and in attack mode. I have no problems with you and do not wish to develope any today. I'd just appreciate it in the future if you wouldnt direct things toward me that have nothing to do with previous comments I've made. I say this in a polite tone and clarify that since we cannot always interpret the tone of text online.

After much serious thought between Eutrusca and Neo-Anarchists, my vote must go to Neo. The reason for this is because while Eutrusca is most certainly the wise old guy with indispensable information on these forums, he is eclipsed by the young heroine, i.e. Neo-Anarchists. As such, I have no choice but to vote for Neo. And yes, I've been playing entirely too many rpgs lately.

As a side note, the odor of sour grapes is strong in this thread for some reason.

If Eutrusca is out of the running then I vote NONE OF THE ABOVE. The whole competition has been side railed and sabotaged by a couple of people who cause trouble everytime something doesn't go their way. Eutrusca has been nothing but fair and honest and when a couple of whiners can run off a decent man like that, then I say the whole election has been made null. One of them tried to run off another of the finalists but she came back. If Eutrusca will come back then chalk my vote for him.

At 15 minutes until contest end, Neo is the clear winner even if Eutrusca comes back into it. I am in 2nd and Tink 3rd. If Eut comes back, Eut will be 2nd.

All of the Above does have 12 votes, but votes for individual people take presidence.

What I've got so far:

Neo-Anarchists 21 (Possibly 20 as Vittos withdrew his vote, which was for NA)
Eutrusca 16
Keruvalia 9
FairyTInkArisen 7 (possibly 8, but I don't know if the "go Tink!" post was a vote or just a cheerleader)

All of the Above 12
None of the Above 6
