Hundreds killed in Iranian quake
An earthquake has hit several villages in south-eastern Iran, killing more than 500 people and injuring many more.

The 6.4-magnitude quake struck just before 0600 (0230 GMT) and was centred near Zarand in Kerman province, 740km (460 miles) from the capital, Tehran.

The authorities say up to 70% of the buildings in six villages around Zarand have been damaged or destroyed.

Casualties are expected to rise as rescue workers reach the area. Heavy rain is hampering rescue work.

State-run television in Iran and the local governor's office in Kerman put the death toll in the earthquake, which lasted 11 seconds, at more than 500.

The authorities say 196 bodies have now been recovered and identified.

Reports from the area say about 1,000 people have been injured, but casualty figures are still rising.

The head of Zarand hospital earlier said 5,000 people were injured, but Iran's interior ministry says that includes people who received first aid for very minor injuries.

I hate seeing things like that happen to under-developed countries. If that happened here there wouldn't be all that much damage comparitively.

But it would be hyped up a lot more because it happened in a developed country, because we all know that people in richer countries are more human!

If it happened in one of our major cities it'd be worse. Most buildings aren't quake-proof.

Well, they are in an earthquake zone. I genuinely feel for any lives lost, but they're kinda used to earthquakes - sort of like Californians.

Oh, and Monkeypimp, they're not an under-developed country. They have some under-developed areas, but so does the US. :) Not sure why they do it, but they take a place in Iran with 400 people living in it and call it a "village", but where I live has a population of 400 and it's called a "town". Image, I suppose. *shrug*

Sorry, by 'here' I was refering to Wellington where I live, and due to a rather large earthquake in the 1850s (which bought up land most of the CBD now sits on) and a large fault line running close to the city, there are earthquake regulations.

That the Tsunami and the earthquake hit Muslim areas prove that God is against them!!

(Oh, sorry, I was just spewing the same crap that Al-Queda said about the four hurricanes hitting Florida...) :D

...sorry, I'm feeling a little sarcastic this morning...

I thought that the areas out of the main cities were, sorry, western media ya' know. 400 people would be quite a small town, though. I agree with the image bit.

I'm sure I saw someone say, in full seriousness on a thread after the tsunamis that it only happened because God was against them or something.

Some of them are, nod. Iran is somewhat of a poor country due to years of war with Iraq followed by lots of sanctions from the West. It's getting better, though. As Russia's and China's economies grow, so does Iran's.

Man, I hate pundits...

The idea that God would send down natural disaster to obliquely help one faction or another is really (and pathetically) self important. I feel just a shade sorry for that person, but if it was a fellow American, it just proves the worth of the Electoral College.

Actually it is more to do with Iran being situated on top of Plates within the earth's structure that collide, thus, causing vibrations, otherwise known as an earthquake. :)

The entire Middle East is prone to being shaky, geologically and politically.

Buildings in earthquake prone areas are designed to hold up, thats why you dont see thousands upon thousands of people dieing when an earthquake hits in california
