Save The Manatees!!!

Manatees are sooo cute. But they are in trouble. Manatees are slow moving, gray skinned mammals who live in warm shallow water. Because they have poor vision and move slowly, the motor boaters who boat in their area often cut them with the blades. This kills manatees and harms unborns as well. We need to stick together to save these precious sea cows and force the governments around the world to prohibit motor boating in such areas. Thanks. And holler if you love manatees too!

They are called peixe-boi here in Brazil, (Fish bulls) I have been to the preservation centre at Fort Orange, and have actually hand fed one. The most amazing creatures. There is huge preservation project for them here, along with one for sea turtles.

For anyone who can read Portuguese (or Spanish as that generally works) here is the preservation project's site (http://www.projetopeixe-boi.com.br/)

I want to cut up two bumper stickers, a "Jesus Saves" one and a "Save the Manatees" one, and make a "Jesus Saves the Manatees" sticker.

Umm, manatees live in the ocean, so are you suggesting boats be prohibited from the ocean??

They come a little inland. Most notably the canals and the intercoastal in Florida. I used to live there, so we had to be extra careful when boating from my uncle's house to the ocean cause there were quite a few manatee zones.

its nice that there are people out there who actually care enough to be careful around manatee zones and try to avoid injuring them

Habitat and Range: Manatees can be found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, saltwater bays, canals and coastal areas. Manatees are a migratory species. Within the United States, West Indian manatees are concentrated in Florida in the winter, but they can be found in summer months as far west as Texas and as far north as Virginia. However, these sightings are rare. Summer sightings in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina are common. West Indian manatees can also be found in the coastal and inland waterways of Central America and along the northern coast of South America, although distribution in these areas may be spotty.

I don't much care for seafood. Still, it would be nice not to have to hose down the outboard motor every time I come ashore.

Some people are just dunderheads.

There are areas of shallow coastal waters that there is no need to ever enter with a motorised boat. (You could always use a fan driven boat if you needed to) These areas can be set aside as sanctuaries/reserves for manatees and other wildlife as well.

Manatees are vegetarian grazers. They eat seaweed. Lots of seaweed in shallow water is not good for your boats anyway.

Sadly, you are mistaken, or else it wouldn't be the problem it is. Manatees enjoy the same waterways as most boaters. They are slow and unafraid of humans.

Dang, gotta go, Maybe I finish later.

The solution is to find a great tasting manatee recipie. If people could be convinced to eat them, manatees would be farmed. They would never go extinct.

"The West Indian manatee is related to the West African manatee, the Amazonian manatee, the dugong, and to the Steller's sea cow, which was hunted to extinction in 1768."

...So *how* am I going to collect the whole set, if one has been extinct for 237 years?!?

What the hell is a walrius?

Manatees are uber-cool. Unfortunately it's always the best animals that we kill. The Dodo... now that was a great animal until we decided it was also good target practice. What the hell did humans get from dead dodos anyway?

We should equip manatees with lasers, รก la Dr. Evil's sharks. Sharks don't need lasers, whereas manatees clearly need them to blow up motorboats with.
