What is the best film you have seen?

Not really old films on the poll but if your film isn't on there just pick other.
Alien Born

Other:- 12 angry men (1950s b&w)
Possibly the best portrayal of human nature on the cinema screen ever. Also reason for hope.

Whoa, this is a really interesting and yet crazy thread - there are loads of films out there! Umm, I'm trying to decide is I love Captain Corelli's Mandolin or hate it. The book is my favourite of all time, but I think you have to read it to totally understand the film, and there's alot of deviation from the book in the film. Otherwise, I thought A Time to Kill was a great film. Anyway... yes....

My all time favorites are Top Gun (for pure fun and adrenaline), The Patriot (Mel Gibson's reminder of the sometimes terrible cost of freedom and why it is worth defending), Shawshank Redemption (beautiful portrayal of the human spirit and its capacity to lift others even amidst the most trying of circumstances), The Passion of the Christ (there is no higher truth than what Christ did on my behalf at the cross). I must finally be growing up because I dropped RAD of the list.

i find it impossible to pick a favourite film :/
I loved Requiem for a Dream , loved the Usual Suspects, loved Fight Club, loved Godfather (all three), loved Pulp Fiction, loved The Blues Brothers, loved The Pink Panther series etc, etc.
I read the novella of Shawshank ("Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption") well before i saw the film and it's easily the best adaptation i've ever seen but i've never been able to rate it too highly because the novella's so good, which is a pity i guess.
Oh, and i see someone's mentioned One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. If you thought it was good read the book - it goes so much deeper, it's brilliant.

The best movie i have ever seen in Schindler's List, and many people have told me it's a weird choice for a favorite movie. My grandpa and his brothers were in concentration camps for the last two years of the war, so anything Holocaust related i feel an emotional connection to, even moreso than most people would. That particular movie i love because it is emotional, beautiful, poignant and touching. It shows us that even our heroes are far from perfect, that sometimes they even straddle the line between hero and villain. It showed us the incredible evil and hatred that mankind is capable of, but it also showed the incredible love and compassion that mankind is cabable of. I think it changed the way we look at the world, ourselves, and eachother.
