I think a virtual wake might be in order. I'll probably be on here at some point tonight drinking (actual) whiskey and hunting for some quotable chunks of the great mans prose. Someone else can supply the firearms.

No, no, no. Not whiskey. A quart of rum; a quart of tequilla; a case of beer maybe; but not whiskey.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls. Not that we needed all that for the trip, but once you get into a serious drug collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can. The only thing that really worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge, and I knew we'd get into that rotten stuff pretty soon.

Well ... shit.

I've only ever had three personal heros outside of people I have known personally ... George Harrison, Hunter Thompson, and Bob Dylan. Two down ... one to go.

*sigh*

Ah well ... think I'll pop in Where the Buffalo Roam.

Bugger. Oh well, I suppose it had to happen sooner or later. In a way, it's amazing that it didn't happen much, much sooner. Still and all, I'm sorry he's gone. Anybody know if he wrote anything after Better than Sex?

years ago, i named my pet hedgehog Dr. Gonzo. he never said anything profound, never impacted modern journalism, and he never rendered any philosophical reflections on his cockroach addiction. but he ate well, he kept good company, he made a bunch of young rabble-rousers happy, and he fell over a great deal. i wonder if HS would have approved?

Part of me wants to think it's just an elaborate ruse, and the good Doctor has slipped quietly away to a land of unending cocktails.

But alas, I fear not.

Hunter, the world just got a few degrees colder. You are missed already.

For those of you interested, Rolling Stone has done a brillant piece of Thompson's life in tribute in the current issue.
