Almost anywhere. The one I miss most is Mexican though. No good Mexican food to be found anywhere in this country.

Just noticed - Scottish?

Are you checking whether people choose randomly, or whether anyone has actually lost their mind?

The best place to get a good meal is England, not for the shepherds pie etc but for the diversity of the food available. By accepting the foods and customs of immigrants I beleive we now must have one of the most diverse tastes and "menus" available.

I hear some people genuinely like all their food deep fried and/or full of salt. :)

I chose Mexican, but seriously, I prefer "American" food, if you want to call it that. Steak and potatoes kind of shit.

Punjabi? That's a bit specific isn't it? :p
I embrace all food, depending on what I'm craving.
I wouldn't mind a South Indian style thali right now. Yum, sambar and rassam. Or a masala dosa. (a really nice crispy slightly sour pancake filled with spicy potato)

Burritos, and I've said this before, are the most perfect form of food available. Everything is better in burrito form. All hail the burrito.

Though I do like Italian.

What I'd really like is the Iron Chefs creating crazy ass food for me on an hours notice...

I like it all, especially Bury black puddings boiled not fried, with loads of vinegar and mustard. English mustard that is, not the sissy stuff.

Oh and haggis, neeps and tatties is good too but I wouldn't go so far as the deep fried battered mars bars.

all of the above can/have been adopted and adapted by the english(and british but i'm english and don't know about the others) the recipes we see here are adapted from the originals or even simply invented here. The english have some excellent native meals, along the line of pies and stews, mainly because of the ingredients available. We did not have potatoes, pasta, rice, spices beyond simple herbs. I am not saying our native cuisine is any better than anyone else's but we have adapted to modern times and at least accepted that there is much to learn from foreign cuisine. I would be interested to know where you are from and if you have spent any time here or are basing your arguments on outdated stereotypes.

I personally like Italian food the most, particularly pizza, but I am surprised that Scottish food has been included since we have the worst diet in Europe which is reflected by a lower life expectancy in the poorest area of Glasgow than Iraq.

I have deviant tastes ... same reason Chinese food of any type didn't make the list.

Was actually thinking of one of the best meals I've had--shepherd's pie, in fact--at a Scottish restaurant in the U.S. ... I've eaten at English-style restaurants in the U.S. too, but have never been to Britain.
Asengard

I think foreigners have a bad conception of British food because we cook so much.

In America and on the continent they are more likely to eat out or have takeaways. Restaurants in Europe tend to be better than here in England where you are generally stuck with pub grub unless you want to spend a fortune on a meal.

We have good restaurants but you need to know where they are, they're not on every street like they are in America.

The best British food is what your mum would make on a Sunday.
Roast Beef/Lamb/Pork/Chicken with roast potatoes AND mash. Cauliflower and Broccoli cheese, carrots and swede, roasted parsnips and loads of gravy. With English mustard/mint sauce/apple sauce/sage and onion stuffing.

Beautiful!

You have named some of the most popular meals in england, not just with the english either. On this board alone people have named shepherds pie as one of the best meals they have had. There is another thread debating the virtues of bacon and sausages, so sausage and egg is another popular meal. You had a bad chinese? not very english is it. I think this is your taste, not our food, please don't slag off an entire nation's cuisine because you didn't like 4 meals while you were here, 1 of which was not english.

Shepherd's pie is best when seasoned properly. You have to use salt, despite the current low-sodium trend, and salted real butter helps too, course that conflicts with the low cholesterol trend. Oh and some people even sweeten the hamburg with sugar, but oh wait that conflicts with the low carb trend. There's lots of ways you can do it though. Lots of ways that taste really good.
