NS Nerdiness: Your Nation's Language

Takuma
21-02-2005, 05:06
In continuing with my traditions, first with my National Anthems thread, here is this one!

What language(s) do the people of your country speak? Have you created one? Do they speak an Earth language? Is your country bilingual? Etc.

I have (partially) created a language, Takumese for mine. Click here (http://www.freewebs.com/marusproductions/takuma/takumeseorthography.htm) for the orthography. The only phrase at the moment is in my sig, and it says basically "Lo, Great Takuma! Takuma free, Liberty!"
Takuma is also bilingual, with a different language, Sandla, spoken in the north.

Anyone else?

We speak USAian. We only made a change or two in the written language, to make letters that look similar more different from each other.
Avadria
21-02-2005, 05:43
"Hagon, Im lod Avadria fel Im spaken Ebinspak oz Avadrisk. Avadrisk ist dod daet volk aof Avadria hab nomen Ebinspak."

Or for you English speakers out there:

"Hello, I'm from Avadria so I'm speaking Ebinspak or Avadrian. Avadrian is what the people of Avadria have named Ebinspak."

Simple but it's a small snippet of Avadrian, the official language of Avadria (Although English is taught in some schools, as well as German to a lesser degree, and Chinese, Korean, and Japanese are spoken almost exclusively within the city of New Beijing). Yes I too have made a language and I'm looking to insert as many snippets as possible into some of the RP's I'm in. Heck I've even made an alphabet for it, which I might just post I suppose (although it's a crappy handwritten scan).

But for my language I don't have a pronounciation guide such as yours, mine instead is fairly simple (to me at least as I know how I want it to sound). The main thing where pronounciation is different is on the vowels. Basically it's:

"A" = "Ah" (As in "Father"
"E" = "Eh" (Sort of, although it's not stressed too much. I'm not exactly certain how to write it out)
"I" = "EE" (As in "Free")
"O" = "Ou" (Not really certain on any example of this to be honest. I'll edit if I can think of one)
"U" = "OO" (I suppose it would be as in "Loop")
"J" = "Y" (Such as "Ja" is pronounced "Ya")

It's kind of hard to explain for me I suppose. But I might put the alphabet up just to add some more to my brief introduction to the language.

Andaluciae
21-02-2005, 06:08
The official language of Andaluciae is Andaluciaen English, but there is a sizable (500 million people) who speak Andaluciaen German in the East.

About 100 million people in the Southeast speak pax Germanian German dialect (another nation in my region.)

Another 200 million speak Andaluciaen Polish.

Latin is also common amongst some of the power elite, but all government work is done in Andaluciaen English.

In our colonies: All government work is done in Andaluciaen English

Occupied Aldovar: Aldovareon Spanish
Halbar and Halban: Halba and Andaluciaen English
Fijar: Fijarian English, Fijarian French, Fijarian Polish
Sarzonia

Sarzonia's official language is English. Spanish is spoken by a small minority among their families and in small communities, but everyone must be able to communicate in English.
Liebermonk

English in all of Liebermonk
A variation of Queyna (the Tokein Elfen language) is spoken in our Earth II Liechtenstein lands
Spanish in Liebermonkian Hidalgo (which is south Texas) also in Earth II

All three are official languages, and all government documents are printed in all three.
Letila
21-02-2005, 06:30
The official language of Letila is Letilan. I haven't really made up anything about it, but I do have other languages I've made. I'm working on a socialist language.
Gurnee
21-02-2005, 06:39
Hey... I never even thought of a language for my country. Since I said in that one issue that all schoolchildren in Gurnee must be fluent in at least five foreign languages (in addition to our own), I better choose six.

1. Gurnian: This is our nation's language which i just made up.

2. Esperanto (From Wikipedia: a constructed international auxiliary language. The name derives from the pseudonym (Dr. Esperanto) under which the Polish philologist L. L. Zamenhof published the language in 1887 His intention was to create an easy-to-learn language, to serve as an international auxiliary language for global communication. Today Esperanto is used for many activities including travel, correspondence, cultural exchange, literature, and language instruction; it is the most widely used constructed language and even has some native speakers.)

3. Elvish or "Quenya" (intented by JRR Tolkeing for LOTR and his other Middle Earth books).

4. Mandarin- becuase it is the most widely spoken langauge in RL (must know how to speak, but not to write).

5. Latin- So our people can know enough conversational French, Spanish, Portugese, and Italian to communicate with people to whom this is their first language. (About 500 million people in RL.)

6. English, since that is the language of my nation's region. (And also spoken as a 1st language by about 402 million people in RL.)

I numbers 1,2, and 6 are my nation's official languages. The other 3 are just required to know, but not used in public places. Wow, I am an NS nerd :).

Everybody here speak 'Greedy' language. It's all to do with sticking a 'Big Shiny Thing' with one hand and pointing what you want with the other.

Nurcia
21-02-2005, 07:19
Well, Nurcia does have it's own language and bans the use any other language, but I've never worked out how my nation's language works too well. It is supposed to be harsh and nasty sounding though, maybe I'll just copy it from the Black Speech of Mordor, that certainly sounds nasty enough when spoken.
Saarin Jargo
21-02-2005, 07:22
Saarin Jargo has no official language. This leads to an administrative nightmare, as documents must be printed in all languages. Legislation has recently been passed to create a new language combined from many dialects in an attempt to reduce the number of languages commonly used, but this will most likely have little or no effect for many years to come. Babeltech has introduced dialect transducers that look like a small earpiece to deceifer speech patterns into any language, and, although the technology is quite advanced, there occasionally are problems with the current models.
The Parthians
21-02-2005, 07:22
The official language is Persian, but the Avestan language is very commonly used.
Poptartrea
21-02-2005, 07:34
Latin. Sounds pleasant and my citizens should be able to puzzle out a conversation with a speaker of a Romance language. We've had to overhaul the vocabulary for modern usage, so it might be considered an entirely new language.
Evinsia
21-02-2005, 07:45
Evinsia's official language is Evinsia, which is identical to English.
Toujours-Rouge

The Segovene
21-02-2005, 08:27
Hahaha! I went through and basically bastardized German and Czech, since on the Eastern European map I'm sammiched squarely between 90% of Austria, parts of Bavaria, and Czech lands all the way up to Prague... So, long story, but here's the official excerpt from the Segovian Factbook.

Origin of the Segovian Language:
The origin of the Segovian Language went through three different phrases. At one point in time, a Slavic Czech tribe had left the Bohemian region of the old Czech lands, migrating west where they were exposed to the German lanugages. However, because of increasing hostilities by the local Germanic tribes, these Czechs returned (or more accurately were forced) back into Bohemia. Czech, their original language, had become incorporated with this German, which became known as Segovian, or "the language in between." The second phase of the language incorporated Slovak, a language nearly identical to Czech. By the third phase, or Modern Segovian, it had become a language of its own, very vaguely resembling its predecessors.

Ice Hockey Players
21-02-2005, 09:17
In Ice Hockey Players, everyone speaks English with a Canadian accent. We also have a language based off of Japanese characters that we intend to market to the world as an international language. It's a little like esperanto except with Japanese characters, which are largely simplified. However, it's mostly spoken among students; most people stick to English.
The Abomination

"Sie'ran idyllitalli maharovni tequellan si'quitel. Ma'tierra folickatel Shei nevatel."

I would explain further, but its a language understood only by the priestly caste and indentured slaves. You sure ain't one, you sure don't want to be the other. ;)
The Alma Mater
21-02-2005, 10:31
Well.. The Alma Mater basicly is an university with an incredibly large campus. Since citizens from all over the world register people tend to be multilingual. However, most courses are given in English, Interlingua and Esperanto. Some require knowledge of additional languages.
