Most contests on here are, unfortunately. However, the reason-giving thing may be a good idea, considering that all the people who gave Tink their 8 votes don't get on here much except to support her in these silly things or RP...

Would you not feel better by giving your votes to some one who actually deserves respect? Like lets say some one who is informative, keeps up with the world and doesn't have an extreme view one way or another, yet represents the validly of current events as they are without their own spin, whether it be right or left. Some one open minded, who cares about the world around them and not just one country, but the world in general. Some one you could look up to and know they were not just bullsh*tting you to try to bring you under their tent?

Nah, that's just crazy talk..lol sorry ;)

It's unfortunate that more people haven't realized that you're the best poster on NationStates. Well I dunno Keruvalia, you could ask a mod to check it out.

By the way kudo's to all of you who have not voted for themselves. I told Zeppistan he should, but he has outright refused. He said that by voting for himself it would show how little you should respect him, not how much. I admit I really tried, I told him others had. He said he is not others. That if they care that much, so be it. You know, I respect him all the more for that. The guy never ceases to amaze me. I don't care if he wins this or not. He has my respect above all, because I know what type of person he is.

(Ok, rant over) ..lol

I voted for myself as a joke at first, and now it's grown into a more horrid joke.
Trying to go as far as I can on my own votes. I don't expect to win, nor do I want to. And I honestly don't care who respects me on this forum (Althoug I'd hope I get some).
I respect many of those on the list (The ones I know of anyway), and I'd hate to offend some of them by being forced to choose between them, so I vote for myself, and have fun with it.

Now, don;t let me be the only one who finds it funny that I made it this far.

I do not want this to be a popularity contest.
Unfortunately, it appears that is exactly what is happening, IMHO. Please take no offense Keruvalia.

Although I have taken part up to this point by voting, I will no longer participate in a contest that has up to this point involved ego inflation and deflation.

We should ALL strive to be respectful on a daily basis? By giving respect, one earns respect and that is far more important than a popularity contest.

Some posters have earned my deepest respect for their compassion towards others and yet they were never even nominated. And to be brutally honest with you, I found myself throwing all my votes to one candidate, (even though others were deserving), in an effort to thwart the possiblity of a certain individual, (who I have far less respect for) from claiming the "Most Respected" crown. This to me is wrong thinking and led me to remove myself from the list of electors.

I will leave you with this quote:

I feel that the essence of spiritual practice is your attitude toward others. When you have a pure, sincere motivation, then you have right attitude toward others based on kindness, compassion, love and respect. Practice brings the clear realisation of the oneness of all human beings and the importance of others benefiting by your actions.

Hmm, that surprises me Canuk. I thought Zep you and I shared a very common value on most things, which would of earned you his respect. I guess not. I do agree this contest is not about respect, but who can flash their boobs or can show they are the "fluffle" people. But I thought you knew Zep wasn't like that. I use him as an example because that is who you were supporting. In my mind an excellent choice. As he was always a moderate on these forums and used facts, not emotion to back up his arguments. I understand and respect your decision, but I would be lying if I didn't say I was some how disappointed in it.

Peace,
Steph.

what the hell has that got to do with being respected?! I used to like you but lately you've become really spiteful and vindictive!

Lets see, you had your first nation deleted for spam. You just came off of a 3 day forum ban for spam, you never discuss any thing serious on this forum, it's like a social club to you. You flash your cleavage for all to see. You advocate for how wonderful you are, but I've never seen you have a serious discussion on this forum other than to flirt and the new buzz word "fluffle" I'm sorry, as an adult woman, that doesn't scream respect to me. I'm not saying you don't deserve respect, I'm just saying you sure don't act like a person who would have a lot of it if this is how you really are. I have no personal problem with you. But you are up against people such as Bottle, Zeppistan, Niccolo Medici and others who use their brain on this forum and not their boobs to make their point. If that makes me have more respect for them than you, so be it. However, if me pointing out the obvious to you is spiteful and vindictive, so be it, sounds like your problem not mine.
FairyTInkArisen
21-02-2005, 16:10
i've gotten involved in debates on this forum before but i soon came to realise that there really isn't any point! nobody listens to what you're saying, nobody is going to change their opinion because of your arguments and nobody is gonna change your opinion with their arguements! it's just one big cycle repeating itself over and over again with everybody giving the same arguements over and over again! it's utterly pointless! so instead i choose to not waste my time posting long pointless arguements and instead I have a bit of fun!

My wife had begged, pleaded, pestered, bugged, needled, and otherwise cajholed me to try and get me to put my 8 votes in for myself to get me into the final round. Primarily because she wants to post a wonderful essay on why I should be considered so respected.

Sorry babe. I can't do it.

Proving that I resepct myself is not the same as having the honest votes of others. And if someone gets there over me for their socializing, well then that's how it goes. I have a job, I have a family, I have obligations that make it impossible for me to compete on the "fluffle-meter" standard that seems to count most. These things, after all, always boil down to popularity contests anyway. And it's not that I don't enjoy a fun chat, but just that I have little enough time to spend online and I prefer a good debate.

And sweetie, if I don't make the next round you can still post your essay - and people can take it or leave it as they would have anyway. Besides - knowing that I'm at the top of YOUR list is all that really matters to me anyway.

Love ya sweetie :fluffle:

I find these three intelligent people highly intelligent individuals, who make well argued points. I don't always agree with their points of view, but because they can debate in a civilised and intellectual way, I respect them nonetheless. This particular vote has nothing to do with popularity or whatever - I don't spend enough time on this forum to really get to know people.

~~~~Dalai Lama~~~~
You know, Cannuck, I hardly ever find myself agreeing with you as we have different political and cultural views. But, in this, I agree with you wholeheartedly. Rather than voting for a person's demeanor and the way they treat others, many are voting popularity.
OK, I'm finished agreeing with you. We can go back to arguing now.
Four a piece
For Eut because he's a caring old codger who's seen a lot in his time, has a lot to teach, and shows an unrivaled love for his grandkids. Its hard not to respect that.
For Peech because shes one of the most caring and kind people Ive had the pleasure of meeting here, but she isnt afraid to stand up for what she beleives in either. She has two adorable children which she loves in large quantities - which again, is hard to deny repsect for.
I didn't nominate myself and I havn't forced people into voting for me, yet i'm the one who is being attacked and getting upset! so, I withdraw myself from the competition and I hope you're all happy and know that I don't need your stupid respect!
Lets see, you had your first nation deleted for spam. You just came off of a 3 day forum ban for spam, you never discuss any thing serious on this forum, it's like a social club to you. You flash your cleavage for all to see. You advocate for how wonderful you are, but I've never seen you have a serious discussion on this forum other than to flirt and the new buzz word "fluffle" I'm sorry, as an adult woman, that doesn't scream respect to me. I'm not saying you don't deserve respect, I'm just saying you sure don't act like a person who would have a lot of it if this is how you really are. I have no personal problem with you. But you are up against people such as Bottle, Zeppistan, Niccolo Medici and others who use their brain on this forum and not their boobs to make their point. If that makes me have more respect for them than you, so be it. However, if me pointing out the obvious to you is spiteful and vindictive, so be it, sounds like your problem not mine.
Ok, Im sorry - but all of this nonsense is making me quite upset, and I feel a duty to try and sort it out.
First of all, respect is a matter of opinion. It is not given out specifically for interest in political or religious debate. As a matter of fact, due to the level of argumentation herein, I have tried in earnest to avoid these topics since I beleive my opinions are my own and ought to be kept sacred as such. I have no interest in conflict - and so I avoid posting things that I feel will involve such. That said, I have nothing against people who are interested in debating these topics - there are many valid debates to be held - but we cannot expect that everyone will be interested in that. In the same breath, I would hope that people interested in these topics can be a little more understanding of people who would rather discuss other issues in this forum. This happens to be a door that swings both ways.
One way to lose respect, however, is to be disrespectful of other peoples feelings and emotions. I think that a lot of people here have forgotten that. Now, perhaps some people behaviour here on the forums is carried out in different taste than my own - but I still respect their right to compose themselves in any fashion the so choose to. As long as it isnt done in an attempt to be spiteful or mean it does not bother me, nor will I allow it to.
The beautiful thing about people is that we are all different. We have different values and hold different things in varied weight accordingly. There is no need to be making personal attacks on peoples choices and/or compositional values because they are different than your own.
I find respect for people, above all else, that treat others well. Regardless of social stature, wealth, 'intelligence' (which I find extremely subjective anyway), or personal values. I think we all had better take a good long look in the mirror before we start pointing the dirty finger around and making unjust accusations. Respect is a matter of opinion, not a matter of fact.
I think that there are some people here that need to find a little more humility and a lot more understanding before they make the kinds of accusations that I have been reading. I for one have grown weary the constant friction between what appears to be two quickly separating factions of NS. What we have here is nothing more than a small microcosm of reality. In life, just as it is here, there are going to be people with differing motivations - and just like in the real world, we ought to be striving to find comfort with each others differences rather than trying to assimilate people into the folds of conformity.
Im positive that if both sides agree to bend a little on this, that we could get a long much easier. Please, for the sake of sanity, lets just give it a try.
"The surest way to corrupt a youth is to instruct him to hold in higher esteem those who think alike than those who think differently"
"We often refuse to accept an idea merely because the tone of voice in which it has been expressed is unsympathetic to us."
Two somewhat fitting quotes from Nietzsche.
Oy ... ok ... can we not argue in this particular thread? I gotta go through all this in a few hours and count votes, ya know. :p
As the originator of this competition, I will remind ya'll that I did say you could define respect any way you wanted to. I also pointed out that in the next round, you'll have to start saying why you're voting for who you're voting for. I meant no implication toward anyone currently in the competition as I have the utmost respect for all of them for different reasons - some for their humor, some for their dignity, some for their passion, some for their devotion, and some for their charm.
Let's try not to turn this into a wrestling match, cuz frankly ya'll aren't naked enough and there isn't enough baby oil.
I think you'd be hard pressed to find a lot of people who were not pubescent boys who would think flirting and exposing ones' cleavage to gain popularity would amount to respect. Well maybe some dirty old men might think differently, I think I'm in the majority. Perhaps not the majority here, but the majority in the way life works. If this was the "nicest" "cutest" "sexiest" etc contest I would agree with you. But this is suppose to be about respect. Respect has to do with using your brain, not your body and your flirting tactics, cause lets be honest, how many people in real life respect that after they've got such a person in bed the next day?
I am not saying that is Tink, I just call em as I see them. Besides, how much respect can you have for some one who can't even follow the basic rules of Nationstates? Should that not also be a pre-req for respect? Some one who doesn't get deleted for spam, has just come off a 3 day forum ban, yes I'm sure that deserves tons of respect.
I do agree this contest is not about respect, but who can flash their boobs or can show they are the "fluffle" people. But I thought you knew Zep wasn't like that. I use him as an example because that is who you were supporting. In my mind an excellent choice. As he was always a moderate on these forums and used facts, not emotion to back up his arguments. I understand and respect your decision, but I would be lying if I didn't say I was some how disappointed in it.
Peace,
Steph.
Perhaps you missed my point? I have the utmost respect for Zep, and by my withdrawal as an "elector", nothing has changed. I also have great respect for many other posters here and, IMHO it doesn't take a contest such as this to prove who is "MOST" respected. I regretably got sucked into a popularity contest and that is not where I want to be. I have a daily opportunity for growth and enjoyment of life, and I will continually be attracted to those that seek to make the world a better place for all people. Those people have my undying respect.
Tinks, if it hurts when people say things that you take as an attack on your personality, then surely this means that you are not happy with that aspect. People here attack all kinds of things, some of these attacks are personal, and get dealt with by the mods usually, others are not, but hurt all the same.
When I feel criticised by something, and it bothers me, I have to take a step back and see if it is because I am not happy with having done whatever it was that I did. 99% of the time it is.
If something hurt, you can learn from it. You can take a step closer to being happy with yourself. :)
Quit arguing in this thread like Keruvalia already asked you to.
If you must bicker, I'm sure he'd appreciate it greatly if you'd take it somewhere else.
As a passing note, arguing and acusing others in a thread about respect is rather ironic, is it not? Perhaps we should all step back for a moment and look at how ridiculous some of what we are saying is.
Thank you for the compliment, but I still maintain that Niccolo Medici should win.
I'm rather ambivilent about the idea of "winning" a respect contest. Respect can be a fluid thing, similar to popularity contests. I would not want anyone to feel pressured to "keep up" with their reputations on this forum. I would not want to be under a looking glass; I just liked making the list. It soothed the savage ego, but thats all I would ask for, a little respect (plays the song on his stereo).
Its good to know I'm held in esteem, but I'm not competitive enough to want to "win" such a competition. I would fully support the desicion to leave the list as it was.
...Besides, its a little too much like "Survivor: NS" for my liking. I fear I might have to perform a humiliating "challenge" soon ;)
