Woooo! I'm seventeen today, that means I can, like, see an R-Rated movie in a theater alone. I think. That and get a driver's license. Wooooo!

What's an R rated movie?

Er... I'm going to take that as a serious question, since I don't know if Europe uses the same rating scale for movies as America does. An R-Rated movie is one which you can only get into if you're seventeen or older or in the company of someone seventeen or older, basically.

im not sure how it works in the rest of Europe, but in the UK we have nice & simple age ratings. to see a "18" certificate movie, you have to be 18. to see a "12", you have to be 12. simplicity itself :)

Ah, well, that clears some things up. In case anyone doesn't know and wants to, in America our rating system goes:

G- General Audiences: movies mostly for the li'l ones, pure and wholesome and full of sugar
PG - Parental Guidance Suggested: movies for kids still, probably with some rude humor or double-entendres or something in it to keep the adults entertained.
PG-13 - Parental Guidance Suggested Under Thirteen: Honestly I'm not sure why we have a PG and a PG-13, and why PG is actually a lower rating than PG-13, there's no limit on age their, so if you're forty, do you still have to ask mommy and daddy for permission? Anyway, PG-13 is where there's a lot of action movies.
R - Like I said, be seventeen and up or show up with an adult and you get in. Mostly for violence, gore, horror, all the good stuff.
NC-17 - Must be older than seventeen to see... we don't have many of these, and I don't know what crazy, bizarre rituals go on in an NC-17 movie.

Happy Birthday.

Here's how the rating system works in Canada.

G--for all ages.

PG--similar in concept to the US PG, but actually the content is closer to PG-13. Most chick flicks fall into this category.

14A--most scary and action movies fall into this category. 14 or older.

18A--very gory movies fall into this category, eg The Passion of the Christ. 18 or older with parental supervision

R--rarely used. This one is for fairly graphic sex and violence. I've only seen boxes of a couple movies with this.

A--adult. This is what they rate porn. I've never actually seen a movie box with this rating.
