I've gotten an assignment in my History class that i have to have done fairly soon, and because many of the people i've talked to on here have an excellent grasp of history and politics in general, i figured i could get a lot of different perspectives on the question, i'd really appreciate all the help i can get from you guys.

Okay, so the topic of my paper is

"Discuss some important aspects of Nationalism in Europe during the 19th century, What conclusions did you reach? What did you think about? What is the importance of these events in history? What are the aftereffects? Both positive and negative. Use serious examples."

Any help is appreciated!

Sorry I can't help you, but I would recommend you get hold of a copy of "The Age of Revolution: 1789-1848" and "The Age of Empire: 1875-1914", both by Eric Hobsbawm. I haven't read them, but if his book "The Age of Extremes: 1914-1991" is anything to go by, they'll be extremely readable and incredibly researched and indepth analysis of European History during that time.
Then there's his book "Nations and Nationalism since 1780: Programme, Myth, Reality.", which might just be helpful to you.

I don't really know much about nationalism in Europe, but I know what it relates to. Not sure about the first half, but the bit in bold, you can talk about Napoleon in France, the unification of Italy - which can digress onto the Crimean War - the unification of Germany, the British Empire.
After effects - First World War, therefore Second World War, therefore the Cold War - and you can go on about the rise of America as the only world power. Also, the massive decrease in power of the Catholic Church (because of the unification of Italy) the collapse of the British Empire, the development of the Third World.
Try finding Years of Ambition: European History 1815-1914 by Cooper, Laver & Williamson. It's extremely good for an overview of the period.

As I do A-Level history on that kind iof course, i might be able to help - i focused on the reunification of Germany and the tide of nationalism that helped cause that, and also nationalism in Russia which caused the foundations of the Russian Revolution in 1917.

Hope that helps a bit

Do you have any online sources or anything like that? It'd be a great help.

The revolutions of 1848 are more than enough for any paper.. google the phrase and you'll have plenty.

You couldnt write that paper without mentioning the unification of Germany and Italy

well, you could. but it would be strange not to

I've started writing. Haven't gotten a long way yet, though. I'm definately going to go in to the Italian and German unifications, and i also intend to draw paralells between the idea of uniting the people using national identity and uniting the working class or uniting the people towards other common goals.

I could also use some political philosophers of the time influenced by nationalism, any ideas?

you could also look into the rise of nationalism in Ireland...a part of the biggest superpower of the time trying to break off
