I found this account remarkable in a few ways. First, it tells us what Bush really thought of his opposition in the 2000 primaries, where he underestimated McCain, but, I think, was pretty on the ball about the rest.
Second, it shows us his personal style of speaking and thinking about the issues (some of them), which is remarkably similar to his public image. Honestly, compared to the Nixon tapes or the LBJ tapes, or rumors about other past presidents, these tapes are almost eerily similar to Bush's public image. Think about how Nixon and LBJ sounded in public, versus their paranoid, bitter or scared taped conversations... Bush seems the same on these tapes as he did in the 2000 and 2004 campaigns, for the most part.. I dunno, judge for yourselves, I'd like to hear opinions on this. :)

Edit: Yes, this is a long article.. but it's the original first-hand article on the topic, the most complete and least editorial.
