What do you think is the best National Anthem?
My favorie is the Mazurek Dabrowskiego (http://www.national-anthems.net/countries/index.php?id=PL), the national anthem of Poland.
I also like the Himno Istmeño (http://www.national-anthems.net/countries/index.php?id=PM), the National Anthem of Panama(I also know it like the back of my hand...see my location to know why).
Oh, and don't just choose your own national anthem unless you really think it's the best. If you haven't heard any others, then go to National-Anthems.net (http://www.national-anthems.net/index.html)

The German, American, and the former Soviet Russian anthems all stir up some sort of patriotism in me.
Don't mistake me for a Communazi though for liking the German and Soviet anthems - I like apple pie and baseball too.

The Internationale is by far the best anthem. It is the anthem of all Socialists and Communists throughout the world and was the anthem of the Soviet Union until 1944. Here are the words of the British version:
Arise ye workers from your slumbers
Arise ye prisoners of want
For reason in revolt now thunders
And at last ends the age of cant.
Away with all your superstitions
Servile masses arise, arise
We'll change henceforth the old tradition
And spurn the dust to win the prize.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
So comrades, come rally
And the last fight let us face
The Internationale unites the human race.
No more deluded by reaction
On tyrants only we'll make war
The soldiers too will take strike action
They'll break ranks and fight no more
And if those cannibals keep trying
To sacrifice us to their pride
They soon shall hear the bullets flying
We'll shoot the generals on our own side.
No saviour from on high delivers
No faith have we in prince or peer
Our own right hand the chains must shiver
Chains of hatred, greed and fear
E'er the thieves will out with their booty
And give to all a happier lot.
Each at the forge must do their duty
And we'll strike while the iron is hot.

This is not the real version. The real version is "big trumpety" kind of like the German anthem. It is very beautiful to listen too if you are Icelandic, it's a poem so you really must know what the words mean.

I'm mostly German too, and I love Germany, and because of that people think I'm some kind of Nazi.
But looking back upon that, it is kind of stereotypical. I'm contradicting myself.

well it is call "la marseillaise"and it is bullshit (believe me i'm french) ;)
How is it bullshit?
And to be honest, only the FIRST part of La marseillaise is my puppet's national anthem. In fact, it's on my website right now, just click the link in my sig that says "national anthem", look in the navbar, click "fun stuff". Look at the bottom paragraph, you'll find the anthem for dirdel and binary (my puppet).
I'm planning on introducing Dirdel and Binary into my roleplays soon, but first I gotta get through the war i'm currently in, although it's likely that war RP may never be finished... :(
I like the Russian one, the former-Yugoslav, the French and the Canadian one. The Russian and Canadian are my favourites.
I don't like the German one (boring), the USian one (overly bombastic and uninspiring), the Swedish one (too morbid) and the Chinese one (ugh - it's just bad!).

Allons enfants de la Patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
Contre nous de la tyrannie,
L'étendard sanglant est levé, (bis)
Entendez-vous dans les campagnes
Mugir ces féroces soldats ?
Ils viennent jusque dans vos bras
Egorger vos fils et vos compagnes !
Refrain
Aux armes, citoyens,
Formez vos bataillons,
Marchons, marchons !
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons !
1
Que veut cette horde d'esclaves,
De traîtres, de rois conjurés ?
Pour qui ces ignobles entraves,
Ces fers dès longtemps préparés ? (bis)
Français, pour nous, ah ! quel outrage
Quels transports il doit exciter !
C'est nous qu'on ose méditer
De rendre à l'antique esclavage !
(au Refrain)
2
Quoi ! des cohortes étrangères
Feraient la loi dans nos foyers !
Quoi ! ces phalanges mercenaires
Terrasseraient nos fiers guerriers ! (bis)
Grand Dieu ! par des mains enchaînées
Nos fronts sous le joug se ploieraient
De vils despotes deviendraient
Les maîtres de nos destinées !
(au Refrain)
3
Tremblez, tyrans et vous perfides
L'opprobre de tous les partis,
Tremblez ! vos projets parricides
Vont enfin recevoir leurs prix ! (bis)
Tout est soldat pour vous combattre,
S'ils tombent, nos jeunes héros,
La terre en produit de nouveaux,
Contre vous tout prêts à se battre !
(au Refrain)
4
Français, en guerriers magnanimes,
Portez ou retenez vos coups !
Epargnez ces tristes victimes,
A regret s'armant contre nous. (bis)
Mais ces despotes sanguinaires,
Mais ces complices de Bouillé,
Tous ces tigres qui, sans pitié,
Déchirent le sein de leur mère !
(au Refrain)
5
Amour sacré de la Patrie,
Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs
Liberté, Liberté chérie,
Combats avec tes défenseurs ! (bis)
Sous nos drapeaux que la victoire
Accoure à tes mâles accents,
Que tes ennemis expirants
Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire !
(au Refrain)
6
Couplet 1
Tremblez tyrans portant culottes,
Femmes notre jour est venu !
Point de pitié, mettons en botte
Tous les torts du sexe barbu (bis)
Voilà longtemps que ça dure
Notre patience est à bout
Debout, Vésuviennes debout !
Et lavons notre vieille injure.
Refrain
Liberté sur nos fronts,
Verse tes chauds rayons,
Tremblez, tremblez maris jaloux,
Respect au cotillon
Couplet 2
L'homme, ce despote sauvage
Eut soin de proclamer ses droits,
Créons des droits à notre usage,
A nos usages, ayons des lois(bis)
Si l'homme en l'an 93
Eut soin de ne penser qu'à lui,
Travaillons pour nous aujourd'hui
Faisons nous une Marseillaise !

I remember reading parts of an english translatio once...
Quick personal translation:
"Arise children of the fatherland,
The day of glory has arrived!
Over us the bloody banner
Of tyranny holds sway!
Do you hear there in our fields
The roar of fierce soldiers?
Who come into our midst
To slit the throats of our sons, our wives!
To arms, citizens!
Form your batallions!
March on, march on!
So that our fields be drenched
With their tainted blood!"
That's what I came up with. There's probably an official translation somewhere...

The Ball of Kerrymuir as popularized by Jim Croce (http://lyrics.tandj.net/index.cgi?&song=Jim_Croce_-_The_Ball_Of_Kerrymuir)
Written in the 1880's, it supposedly recounts a social gathering that accutally occured in the Kerriemuir disctrict of Scotland, and is also titled The Gathering of the Clans - it has some 40 plus verses...many know it as "Four and Twenty Virgins"

Th Russian anthem.
it sounds so mighty.
The South African national anthem, without a doubt. It's so passionate and emotional.
For the record the vocal file of the South African national anthem is Die Stem, which is no longer the anthem. This is probally a mistake since they have the text for the new anthem and the instrumental file correct as well.

I slightly prefer http://david.national-anthems.net over the main anthem site - it offers more information on the anthems themselves as well as offering most of them in midi. No vocals IOW - but much quicker downloads for those not on broadband ;)
I personally like Gibraltar for its simplicity and many Latin-American ones for the music style. I also like the textual structure of the Dutch anthem (acrostic, symmetrical) - but I don't care much for the text itself or the melody. See http://david.national-anthems.net/nl.htm

Yeah, the Russian Anthem sounds mighty. But methinks that the Polish Anthem sounds so....patriotic AND mighty.
Out of the ones I've heard I like Canada's the best. I know more words to that than my own anthem (USA). But I haven't heard many, so I'm going to listen to some from that link on the first post. But for now, it's Canada.

And the Star Spangled banner kicks ass. When not sung by Whitney Houston.
It pains me to say it as a patriotic englishman but the Irish and Scottish anthems used at the rugby are very moving, the official British anthem,"God Save the Queen" is just pants, but at least it is union jack boxer shorts!!Hendrix's version of the star spangled banner is about as good as it gets, unless you include the brian may version of god save the queen!!!

Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

ii)England (Alternative) - Jerusalem (And Did Those Feet In Ancient Time)
iii)USSR Post-1977 - Hymn Of The Soviet Union
