Chrono Trigger, anyone? What else? Super Mario Brothers, although I could never go past even the very first stage of any SMB games? :D

Chrono Trigger is an absolute classic. I remember buying it for SNES when it first came out. Since then..I've probably beaten it about 50-60 times.

Other favorites of mine (SNES anyways)

Secret of Evermore, Mega Man, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario All-Stars (SMB 3 in particular), Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart, Earthworm Jim, and many others I can't remember right now.

Oh, how silly of me to have neglected to mention Tetris. The first time I played it was, like, 16 years ago. It opened up a whole new world for me. :D

Before that, I remember this DOS game called "Prehistoriks". Beat up creatures crawling up to you for FOOD. Tortured my keyboard playing it. A while ago, I googled for DOS games, and found out that Prehistoriks could be downloaded for free. I think I downloaded it, although I haven't played it. I forgot the Invinciblity Cheat. :headbang:

Any of the early arcade games, from Pong through Space invaders and Asteroids to 1945. I have a bunch on an emulator on my PC, and my son keeps asking "But how do you win that one?"

Simple: You don't! lol.

It's a different concept to the games of today. Back then you played until you lost as a way to separate you from your quarters. Nowadays you play until you win and get bored of a game and buy another.

Prince of Persia! Definitely one of the games I couldn't stand although sometimes miss! Can't believe there's a PoP game recently out in the market...

Definitely gory considering the era the first PoP was made.

Chrono trigger's cool, but don't forget all those glorious Zelda games. I remember playing Zelda II with my friend back in the early 90's. It was absolutely amazing at the time (I was something like 6 or 7 years old).

I remember Super Mario Brothers well. The first one had my first hunting game on it. In fact, I think Duck Hunt was the first game for the Nintendo Zapper altogether, but don't quote me on that. Anybody ere bought one of those new battery operated Atari joysticks that you plug into your T.V. AV hookup yet. How well do they work if you have?

Thanks a Bunch,

Ahh, Zelda. The sole reason I actually desire a Gamecube. lol. I have an Xbox currently, and I love it. I remember playing Zelda from the minute I got home from 1st grade until dinner and then bedtime. God I love Nintendo platformers. Who's with me?

All of these games you guys are talking about are cool, but who here remembers the original Final Fantasy? I've played some of the newer ones, but they just aren't the same anymore. Ahh, glory days of long past. When will they come again, I ask. Most things just aren't the same. They bear nothing original but live off the name. Heh. I'm a poet and didn't know it.

I was too young to understand the complexity of the original Final Fantasy when I had the NES. I did play the PS1 version, as well as a bit from the GBA version. Great game.

You guys want a list of my NES games I had?

Final Fantasy, Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt, Super Mario 3, Robocop, Airwolf, Tiger Heli, Magic Johnson's Fast Break (basketball games sure have changed huh?), Terminator 2 Judgment Day, Kabuki Quantum Fighter, Cops and Robbers, Wheel of Fortune, Kirby's Dreamland (I had the original idea for Kirby absorbing enemy powers by the way), The Legend of Zelda, Batman Returns, Xenophobe, The Addams Family, Tiny Toon Adventures, Adventure Island 2, Solar Jetman, MetalMech, and more that are lost in the depths of my memory (and my basement lol)

One of my friends had one. I saw Dreamcasts in odd places, including dusty corners of Toys R Us stores. I saw more places than I could count with my fingers selling DC games on the cheap. I don't know if they're still around, since it's been almost a year and a half since I left Canada for Korea. Although I've never been a big Sega fan, I think it's too bad that Dreamcast met such a demise.

I know what you mean. I got into video games rather late (in my early 20s, despite the Famicom I had as a kid), and I've found myself liking older games more. I remember buying FF9 only to chuck the game away after a day.

Sad, isn't it? Nowadays they trade good gameplay for better graphics all too often. But I swear to you this. If you like RPGs, then you'll love Morrowind. Baldur's Gate is another great one. The Second was better than the first.

I used to have a couple of those handheld LCD games. My fave was this one where you were this astronaut trying to catch other astronauts.

And then there was the NES. Super Mario Bros., Battle for Olympus, Bugs Bunny's Birthday Blowout, Kirby's Adventure, Monsters in my Pocket, Megaman 3...

Oh, Megaman 3.

I still remember that Magnet Man was the first robot master I ever reached, that Spark Man was the first I beat and that Gemini Man killed me in less than a second when I first him/them.

Oh yes. Great days.

You're absolutely right - less emphasis on gameplay for the sake of graphics. For instance, I enjoyed playing Phantasy Star (the one for Sega Master System, that is - so horribly difficult that I've never brought myself to finish it) than I did, say, Final Fantasy IX.

HaHaHaHa I know what you mean. Throwing one then picking up and throwing the other. I was mostly the vamp too. I think it was supposed to be a likeness of Count Dracula but who knows. for the pc I would have to say x-com ufo defense, I always ended up playing right through the night with that game.

And console: I would have to say Ranger X for the sega genesis (megadrive), I don't know why exactly, but it might have something to do with that I got to control a giant mech who had a cool motorcycle thingy, and it could fly! :D

As fast as possible. At one point, I knew every level by heart so it became quite easy.

Which reminds me, who here remembers the original Prince of Persia? I had it and it annoyed the hell out of me. Never beat it.
I remember, I played. I never even got past level 4, I think - the one where the Prince has to jump through a mirror at the beginning and some kind of mirror prince jumps out or something. I never did found it what the purpose of that was, though.

Yeah, it was about PoP. Monsters In My Pocket is one of my all-time favorites. I've always been interested wih vampirism, but you're right. Lycanthropy is a lot more deep and complex. If you get a chance, read Cerulean Sins by Laurell K. Hamilton. Good book on the supernatural. It's and Anita Blake:Vampire Hunter book, but it's nothing like the earlier ones, or so I'm told. Underworld is a good movie about both too. Ever see it and if so, what are your thoughts on it?

i don't really play them anymore (cept my Gameboy) though i did go round to my friends house a couple of weeks ago and him and the other lads there started playing Half Life 2, and when i say play i mean they walked around hitting the walls with a crowbar and trying to see if you can pick up and throw dead bodies (you can't btw) on it

Oh! Oh! I can't believe I didn't mention Civilization - the game that forced me to learn English prematurely. I always played aggresively, building minimal... uhm... buildings in my cities and overrunning the opposition with chariots and knights.

And now, years later, I'm an Alpha Centauri addict who focuses on building up his bases and never goes to war if he can avoid it, because producing military units takes away from constructing my precious base facilities.

Funny how things go, isn't it?

I know. Wait until they get the gravity gun though. Tell them to try that with a circular saw blade. It's one of the best special weapons in the game, plus you can use it over and over as long as you don't lose the blade. Ryan's stepdad is a computer genius and he has a real good setup. We play Half Life 2 every now and again too.

Well, I've been playing Final Fantasy X International (I played the North American version of FFX before, which does not have many features that International has). I like how you can switch party members during a battle, and I think the CTB is not bad, although I'm more accustomed to the ATB like many other FF players. And of course, the graphics are really nice...

But the gameplay is rather too linear. And except for Dark Aeons and the monsters in the Monster Arena, almost all battles that take place in the games are rather on the easy side, although there are a few exceptions, where you lack some characters. And the mini games are horrible... :headbang: (I called my fiance a mad man when he dodged 200 consecutive lightenings, although, well, he did gain the Onion Knight for Lulu after all.)

It's not quite an "old" game, but I definitely enjoyed FFVII much more, especially when it came to the mini games. :D

Yeah. I played Alpha Centauri too. One of the best turn strategy games ever. I loved modding military units but I didn't build that many. I focused more on diplomacy than anything else. I usually played as CEO or chairman Yao. I'm not quite sure of his exact title and name. The new Civilization is pretty cool too if you get the chance to try it out. Also, I loved the Age of... games by Microsoft. Age of Mythology made me a Greek, Norse, and Egyptian mythology wiz now that I think of it.

Yeah, me too. My friend Cruise and his little bro Casey tried to make their own Blitzball game from making one from plastic Wal-Mart bags wrapped with duct tape.

Blitzball. I can't stand Blitzball. I did try to get the hang of it loading an old save when I played the NA version of FFX. I still hated it. I didn't enjoy training the chocobo either. That dumb bird is so impossible to control.

Oh no doubt..both of those sucked. I remember doing them for hours on end, though, just to say I got the items from em.

I love Pac-Man and his beautiful bride. Also, all the old NES games. I can play them for hours, especially Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt with the oh-so-realistic sound that the gun makes. *DING!* Pong, Galaca, anything of the simplistic type. I can play those for weeks without getting tired of them. For some reason with all the 3-dimensional graphics and realism, my interest is lost, but get a guy in 2-d that goes *BOING* all the time and stomps on mushrooms or a dog that laughs in your face, and I'm hooked!

I also liked some of the old-school PC/pre-PC games. Original Civilization and Civilization II are two of my all-time favorites. The way old Oregon Trail, Monopoly, and even some of the ones that you could easily write yourself such as "You are facing a large volcano. To the East is a rickety bridge. To the West is a meadow full of flowers. To the North is a pool of molten lava. To the South is a kitty. Which way will you go?"

haha, Text only adventure games kicked ass. MUDs were, and still are, awesome as well.

Try ADOM (www.adom.de) instead: much less of the 'and the kitchen sink' design philosophy and a much more elegant game. I warn you though, people can play it for years without winning. I am shocked and appalled at how much computer time I must have burnt with it.

I've heard of it, but haven't played it yet. I've been wondering if I should start, but I've got the same concern that you mentioned. :D I bookmarked the site you linked from the thread, to sleep on it for a while longer.

I would recommend it ahead of just about any commercial game, and it is certainly the most well-rounded and accessible roguelike that I have played, neither of these qualities being at the expense of its depth.

And, of course, I'll have to put my usual plug for Popful Mail in there, just because it's such a fun game with only some of it's humor being horribly dated (though, The Governator kinda revives the amusement of Sven T. Uncommon's lines)
