What IS hell?

I just got back from watching the movie Constantine and it was pretty good, a little overdone at moments though.

Anyway, the movie depicted hell as a vast firey inferno with scorhing winds that populated by nightmares of demons. Looks like LA after a nuclear holocaust.

Comparativly, what I've gathered out of my religious experience is that hell is simply the place where all of the mortal sins god hates are. So, that should make hell the place of ultimate carnal and physical pleasure - frankly, that doesn't sound too bad to me.

So, pretend that hell is a physical place (I know the official Catholic stance) and tell us what you think hell is as a place.

If you're not religious, describe your equivilent of 'hell on earth'

I believe that hell is a state of being totally cut of from the presence/spirit of God. So I guess that means there is no happiness or goodness in Hell, because those things are of God.

What you make it

You name it.
Some might say Hell is everything.

However, according to Dante, the worst part of Hell (The ninth circle, where Satan dwells) is total isolation from God. I could explain this more fully, but suffice it to say that while were alive, or just about anywhere, God is 'near' us.
The ninth circle of Hell (Where you can freeze in the company of such greats as Brutus, Cassus and Judas), is apparently TOTALY isolated from God. It was a while ago when I read Inferno, but thats what Mr Dante said.

I personaly think that Hell is basicaly (as they say) what you make it. Its basicaly the worst possible things you can think of happening continuosly, forever. I suppose that would be the worst, knowing that it would never END.

I prefer the second one. Sounds like more fun. As a non-religious person, I just imagine it as whatever suits my fancy at the time.

Hell as a place?

Earth will be consumed by its own internal fire, at the end of the "millenium". Even the atmosphere will pass away with a loud bang. All the works of man will be destroyed, along with Satan and his followers.

The fire will go out, but the effect of that fire will be eternal. :)

That's Hel, single L. Besides, I distrust the Norse. They consider a Loki, God of Chaos to be automatically evil. If he was truly the God of Chaos he wouldn't be evil. For that matter, they consider Odin one-eye to be on the side of good. Laughable really.

I don't believe in Hell/demons/that kind of stuff.

I think Hell on Earth would be drowning in your "problems" and refusing to do anything to help yourself.

Judas, in Hell?? Watch The Last Temptation of Christ. Without Judas, there would be NO Christianity, because Jesus wouldn't have been able to die a martyr. Judas is sitting on Jesus's right hand, in my opinion. He should be considered the Catalyst of Christianity.

Not that it is exactly what i believe, but try taking into account both arguments: that hell is a place cut off from god and all things he offers (happiness, joy, etc.) and is a place of all the ungodly sins, including some forms of pleasure. In this sense, think of the most revolting, disturbing, dream-haunting sexual fantasy you can imagine (to get you started, incest and murder are both sins) and imagine being forced to partake in that sexual activity for, oh, say an eternity. of course, thats only the beginning.. i know i'm not going to try to think about it too much.

Anyways, got any opinions on that? Feel free to criticize, i'm by no means an expert.

I love the fatalism of the norse myths. And I always liked Loki. He's god of magic and fire as well. How can someone not admire the cleverness of Loki?

i wasn't talking about sex, or even the bodies connected to the vaginas. just myriad disembodied vaginas smothering you, seeping into every orafice. it has interesting potential, but overall, it would be unpleasant.

Come on. Demons, flames… give me a break.

Hell is death itself. Imagine you’ve spent your whole life disregarding the Bible and God himself, then one day your life slips away. You get a brief view of the afterlife – everything you’d been told about but hadn’t believed, after sometime of seeing but not being able to touch without some angelic bitch zapping you, God appears and says "Tough luck. Thou did not have faith. Yippee ki ay, muther fucker."

Then the lights go out.

I like it. Too bad there is no hell. It has been expressed, however, that the last few moments of your life last for eternity (or what seems like it). I wouldn't mind that, and it's entirely believable.

I have a sort of weird question to ask.

How does one know that god is good?

If god is omnipotent, he could just as well be almost rotten to the bone, and create something that is completely rotten to the bone, and since all us poor humans stuck in the middle would have as reference would be the two, we'd never know anything but rottenness or almost-rottenness.

This has been bugging me for quite some time. How can we be sure that what we consider good is as good as it can be

Ofcourse this has absolutely no bearing on the universe as we percieve it, but hey, i still want more perspectives on it.

Personally, I think of hell as a little, dark room of complete sensory deprivation where you can't sleep or relax, because your body has no form anymore. After possibly receiving a glimpse of Heaven during your judgment, you're cast out of the sight of God into said nearly-nonexistant state to ponder, for the rest of eternity, how you failed in life, and how you'll never see anyone you cared for ever again.

I don't know about hell having no joy or happiness just because god isn't there. I mean we look at what we like to do today. Many people like to drink or do drugs, its gives them a good feeling. Its also a sin. Others like sex, its a sin. Its almost every earthly pleasure we have is considered a sin by god. We justify following these stringent rules because we think that we are rewarded in the afterlife. But really, most people don't feel god's direct presence here anyway so would the disconnected hell be any different?

I think in the 'hell' we are basically allowed to do whatever we want without the divine repercusions.
