Okay, in response to the title, assuming it is a question, then directly responsible were the terrorists who flew the aircraft into the buildings. On a more wider answer, you'd have to look at the reasons behind why they did that, and I wouldn't be surprised if part of it was to do with us in the West messing around with Middle Eastern affairs. I'm not condoning their actions, but if you follow the trail back far enough, we've done many things to piss religious extremists in the Middle East off.

As for the locations of the attacks, I don't think the terrorists looked at statistics on political views held before stepping into the Terminals.

9/11 occured in Washington and New York because these are locations with buildings very well known worldwide. So there we have the use of popular terms such as the "Twin Towers" which everyone understands. If terrorists blew up a small house in suburban Los Angeles, I imagine the worldwide shock would be less, as the WTC and the Pentagon are recognisable icons.

Secondly, economic reasons. Hit the WTCs, and you stop a lot of financial movement. The stockmarket crashed after 9/11, causing economic damage that is longer lasting, increasing the shock and the effects of the attack.

Nitpick: I'm not sure the Netherlands truly is more atheistic than the USA. I agree it feels that way - but fact is that at the moment the biggest political party is the Christian Democratic Appeal and that this party has constantly been one of the big players for years. People in the countryside still go to churches of various Christian flavours (there even is a bible belt) - and there is a significant number of devout moslims (unfortunately 'too devout' in some cases), hindu's and buddhists - although the latter two are not very vocal. And many Dutch that say they do not follow an organised religion do say they believe in something higher..

I've always wondered this about religious people. Doesn't "God" have better things to worry about than abortion and gay marriage. 9/11 could, at least in theory, be blamed on human action rather than the will of God. one could claim that God was not responsible, but that human sin and evil (and God's reciprocal permissiveness of said evil in the name of allowing free will) was the cause of that tragedy.


BUT...

under Dubya's glorious leadership, Florida got the snot pounded out of it by three hurricanes! if anything looks like the hand of God, that's it. and given Florida's participation in the election that first saw Dubya's rise to power, there's a much clearer connection between Florida's misconduct and God's wrath than there is a connection between gay people and the bombings of 9/11.

I didn't have time to read all of this, but I already have a comment on your first post Jesussaves. You seem to be implying that the Supreme Court Ruling in Roe v Wade was made because they believed that abortions are good. That is not the case. It was made because the practice of some states banning abortion was discriminating toword poor people. Because abortions were only allowed in some states, poor women in anti-abortion states could not afford to travel to another state to get an abortion, but rich women could. The Supreme Court decided that it was discrimatory for some states to ban abortions. Simply put, Roe v Wade is about keeping the government from helping one group, the rich, and not another, the poor (although they don't seem to care about Bush's tax cuts, but that is beside the point).

Just wanted to point out your incorrect assumption. Oh, and two questions for you: Just out of curiosity, do you listen to Spirit in the Sky? That's a good song. Also, since when was a state of god, which I'm assuming The Theocracy of Jesussaves is, Iron Fist Consumerists?
