9 mm. is fine for me. Small, low recoil, and high capacity magazines. With the right ammo the stopping power is supposed to be good. I haven't actually had to shoot anybody yet, so I don't know first hand.

I've got a nice Kimber .45, but I think I might look at some Sig .40s or 10mms. They sell reconditioned pistols at a pretty reasonable price.

One of my favourites is the Walther P99- amazing power.
Another would be either 9mm suppressed or The Browning.

10mm Glock 20 is my favorite.
Although the old Walther P38 is a close second.

Walthers are good weapons.
Lugers and Mauzers always appealed to me.
Is it Mauzers that use the same ammo as Tommy guns?

The Broomhandle Mauser used a fairly small caliber pistol round (.30 Mauser).
The Thompson used the 45 ACP. Very different.

my favorite pistol has to be the .357 magnum. it has great accuracy and stopping power, and just looks cool.

Actually, I'm very inexperienced with handguns, something I've been meaning to correct for some time now. Who has suggestions for a good starting canidate?

Something in a .22LR; weapon and ammo are both inexpensive.

Get something uncomplicated and low powered for starters.
A revolver in 38 Special is a good start, and doesn't cost much.
Or, a semiautomatic in .22 LR.
Once you have the fundamentals down, you can go to something more complicated and powerful.
Also, it's good to get lessons.

I noticed. Well, I'm someone filled with confidence, because rather than become a repeat victim of crime, I've prevented two additional crimes against my person.
Guns are for people who can't wait for the police to arrive (if they show up at all).
18-inch howitzer for me. It ain't a pistol...
Where can I get one?

I like the 9mm Makarov. Reliable, sturdy, inexpensive and has a kick to it.
I loathe Glocks!
Give me a Walther PPK ( or Manurhen clone off - it's just as good but cheaper ) in .32 with glaser safety slugs, or a Desert Eagle in .44 ( I love the Eagle cause even with my small hands and wrists I can still handle it with little recoil problems.
The new Baretta 9000S looks very nice, but I haven't had a chance to handle one.

Don't have too much experience with pistoles as I am not yet of age to own one, but I have heard good things about 9mms and 10mms. Most .45s are either too bulky or dont have a good capactity. I'll probably recieve training with a Berreta m9 in boot camp though.
My dad loved his Browning Hi-Power before it was stolen.
the most awsome model gun i've ever fired is the isreali arms desert eagle i've fired both the .357 and .50 and the .50 is the baddest gun i've evered fired...now if only i could afford one :D
