Like a lot of other atheists, I was fascinated with C.S. Lewis for a long time. I've kind of gotten over that, but I still have a soft spot for him. So here's my poll ...

I remember particularly liking The Last Battle, a brilliant book from a brilliant series.

TL,TW&TW. For me, when I read it (as a child), it expanded my conception of religion beyond conventional christianity, which was the start of a whole long process ....

But not a great fan of his non-fictional work.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is my favourite book in the Narnia chronicles. I havn't read anything else by Lewis. The writing in the last few chapters is easily one of the most magical things I have ever read. An underated classic.

I voted for TL TW & TW myself, but I strongly recommend at least reading The Screwtape Letters ... that's what got me back into him after high school.

I've only read the lion the witch and the wardrobe. I can't say that I like his breed of fantasy.

Yea. The best of the series. And the best of CS Lewis, maybe. Hum, how do I compare this with "That hideous strength"??

I enjoyed his writings, and his friend JRR was really good at his writings too. Oh, and The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe is being made into a movie, and they people that did all the creatures and weapons from JRR's movies are doing it for narnia too, looks pretty kewl

I don't enjoy CS Lewis. His books are great when it comes to deeper meanings of things, as frienship...etc But, a book of his that wasn't so bad was "The Great Divorce"

Although I only read about 4 of those, and when I was about 6 I might add, I remember loving The Lion, The Witch, And the Wardrobe. I'll definitely have to read it again before the movie comes out in December!

By the way, was there some kind of atheist message in his books? I thought that the Lion represented god..but I may be wrong. Can you give me a link for an explanation or elaborate, please? :)

Perelandra, hands down.
Out of the Silent Planet is a distant second.
The Narnia stuff was great allegory, but it was only that, allegory. The Space Trilogy was Lewis's philosophy at its finest.

I was obssessed with Narinia when I was a kid. I voted for TL TW and TW but I love all of them:) I don't like his non-fiction work much. There was already movies made in England based on the Narnia books that are pretty good but obviously old.

Aslan (the Lion) = Jesus Christ.
Edmund = a sinner. he represents Jesus's death for sin.
Jadis (the witch) = Satan... and sin.
all of this becomes painfully clear in The Last Battle. If you read Revelation and then The Last Battle, they're painfully similar.

Never got around to the space trilogy.

As for the "atheist" part, Lewis has a strong evangelical Christian message ... which is why it's ironic that, in my own experience, and the experience of many other people I know, his work exerts a kind of fascination for the atheist-minded ... which is how he earned the honorific "The Apostle to the Skeptics."

As I recall, he tried to argue from a Victorian view of first principles, combining intellect, rationalism and sentimentality. So I guess he may have the same attraction as a fondly remembered comfort blanket.

The Space Trilogy is freaking awesome. An excellent example of early Sci-Fi.

I agree. I also liked Perelandra quite a bit, as well as the Narnia series. I didn't like That Hideous Strength, the last book of the Space Trilogy series as much. Can't remember why. There's a chance that if I read it again I'd enjoy it more.

I've read all of the Narnia books a number of times & the Dawn Treader was always my favourite too.
