Alright, I'm sitting here being bored with nothing to do, and thinking about cars since I like 'em... so I decided, "what the hell" and an posting this...

What kinda car do you drive? It have a name? Any modifications? You race it or take it to any shows or anything like that? Talk about it and tell us about it... :D

----------------------------------------------------------------

My car is named "PAK Accord" because I have a banner on the windshield that says "Punk Ass Kid" on it, and it's an Accord... 1997 at that...

It's a Special Edition... really nice... but had no power so I did some mods to add power (intake, header, exhausts SYSTEM) and some other goodies...
My Ride (http://www.freewebs.com/hirosite/mycar.htm) < Click there for pics, and more in-depth info on my car!

I also plan on setting it in about a year to get a '72 Chevelle SS 454! YAY!!! :D

95 ford escort, 1.8 diesel, normally aspirated.

it does 90 without trouble but it takes 20 minutes to get there.

and bits fall off it quite a lot.

113000 miles and counting.

edit: oh yeah, the modifications - a bunch of silicon sealant and putty bog around the back window to stop rain getting into the boot. it doesn't work, and you can push about 1/2 of the back window out from its mount from the inside.

Angle grinder or an oxy-acetylene torch work well. Might not be able to fit a new knob, but the old one'll come off.

I drive either a '96 Nissan Almera 1.4 5 door (Shit car, real soft suspension, handles remarkably well, does about a tonne-fifteen), or my kit car which is so much more fun. Thinking of selling my Almera and getting a bike of some description. Cheaper to run, and faster.

I agree with you a lot, and that goes for the most of the world, but not everywhere...

I mean, in this country where between cities (most foreigners would take them for towns, though) is at least 50km of nothing but woods and, in some parts of the country, farmland, and public transport goes twice a day per direction, you definitely need a car to get anywhere.

In big cities, though, cars are mostly just a nuisance. But I just can't believe the prices of travel today. In this country with some of the highest fuel prices in the world, traveling by train with my 50% student discount is only slightly cheaper than if I drove a car. Have a friend tag along and it's way cheaper than public transportation. Same goes for those who don't have a discount

That does depend rather heavily on where you live and whether you have a family or not.

While I lived in the UK I used shank's pony, bus, train, bicycle, tandem, horse etc. (Yes I really used all of these one time or another, arriving at school on horseback was fun) I never even bothered getting a driver's license.

Now I live in Brazil I depend upon having a car. The distances are to big and the climate too hot to walk. The traffic and roads too dangerous to cycle. The public transport is too disorganised. Four buses to get anywhere, and virtually no trains. Horese would be a possibility, but I have a family to think about as well now. The cost of maintaining one horse each is prohibitive, and the distances are too great for this to be very practical.

My car, a 2000 Escort, 1.6. Basic family car, boring.

Right now, I drive a 1994 Honda Accord (http://www.prelude-fan.de/pics/acc_g5_1.jpg) identical to this one. A car which I despise and beat on mecilessly. Its a commuter though, and gets great mileage - so thats hard to complain about.

Prior to that, I drove a 1964 Shortbox Chevrolet (http://photobucket.com/albums/v732/LasciviousMax/?action=view&current=64twuck.jpg), and I loved it. This truck was a fire-breathing dragon. I owned a '67 Malibu no post before this, and this was by far more fun. This is a crappy picture (scanned no less), and it was taken before the truck was dropped and all of the stock chrome trim re-added to the box and cab sides. Damn I miss that truck.

They drive a Mercedes ML 350...Absolute favorite SUV. The closest competitiors for me are the BMW X5 and the Porsche Cheyenne.

My dad drives a Mercedes CLK 320...Beautiful car. Sleek...Its the outdated version tough, and in my opinion looks better than the newest one.

Then, we drive a Volkswagen WAnagon(camping car) and a Chrysler Sebring.

We are looking at the absolute beauty Maybach...

Haha, well - not to be picky... but it's actually 'mileage'. ;)

Anyway, in response to that - I love the older domestic's, the last of the 'real' cars as far as im concerned was witnessed in the tailing days of the 50's (granted the 60's were ok) - real metal bodies and a very limited amount of plastics and composites, these cars were rolling works of art. There was so much effort put into the style of cars back then, whereas today more effort is put into efficiency (not a bad thing - but there's no comparing the body lines of an average car today to the body lines of an average car from yester-year). I don't think that theres any auto-builders out there in this age that can make that claim.

In many cases, the cars were still largely hand assembled, and many of the parts actually came into contact with human hands! *gasp* The only major automakers that still follow this manufacturing philosophy to a 'T' are the high end Lamborghini and Ferraris - but then that's a different class of vehicle all together. ;)

Lascivious Maximus, up to 1972 we had 'real' American cars... that's when the oil crisis hit and we got stuck with huge cars and no muscle, then after that, tiny cars with no muscle... of course, there were a few good cars during that time, but as a general rule... they were nothing special...

Well, to be precise, the year of the OPEC embargo was '71, thats why the numbers for the 'vettes changed so dramatically that year, and the '71 Chevelle lost the numbers for the 454. I wasn't really making reference to the power in cars though, I was making reference to the style and materials used by the auto-manufacturing industry. The late fifties marked the introduction of thermo-plastics and other composite materials that would take the builders by storm in the sixties, replacing a large number of otherwise metal and handformed components.

Cars built before the mass introduction of these materials seem to have a little more soul. (then again, maybe I'm too much of a purist)

Ya, but after '72 was then it affected most American cars, such as a Chevelle and such... from '73 on, they were crap... '72 and before was when they were good...

As for styling, I think there were still alotta really nice cars upto the early '70s, such as the Chevelle (again... just using that as an example) after that was when we got max-box styled and sized tin cans...

Yes, but still the power was cut out of the heart of the Chevelle even in 1971. 1970 was the first and only year that the legendary LS6 was offered, the same thing happened to the L88 Vettes that were produced from late 67 through late 69 (in fact the L88's were cut in late 1969 because of concerns that the OPEC embargo would occur as it did - a big concern given the cost of manufacturing these cars in smaller numbers).

In 1970, the General replaced the L88 with the same 450Hp LS6 that had been an option for the Chevelle of the same year, a paltry comparitive to the fire breathing 560Hp L88. In early 1971, because of the looming threat of the OPEC embargo, all of the LS6's were removed and the highest available option became the submissive, but still respectable 365 HP LS5. Of course the numbers went down even more drastically after 1972, but the ball started downhill during the 1970 model year.

Thank god at least the style hung around for a little bit. I do agree that the 60's and early 70's still had impressive body styling, it's just the use of composites that turns me off of them a little. I myself had a 67, and loved it due to the fact that at least the use of composites was minimal. In 68 they introduced a lot more plastics into the dash and console, as well as for things like interior trim etc. I do like them, a lot, but I still feel that cars built prior to the introduction of these unholy materials are built better and with more flavour. :)

Yeah, our family had an old 504 when I was younger. That was a good car too, great for driving long distances. I had an old Datsun Pulsar which wasn't bad, but too cramped. Also an (Australian) Ford Falcon XD which was a great cruising car, but the suspension was to soft for it to handle very well.
