Johnny Cash covering Hurt by NIN is pretty cool
A great song.

I would also add 99 Red Balloons by Goldfinger. For an English cover, it does justice to the original and gets the point of the song.

Do they have any songs that don't sound like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes covering a pop song.

I have a friend who loves them, and when he plays them, I can't tell when one song ends and one song begins.

From the list provided in the poll, I picked Concrete Blonde, mostly because they're the best from the group on the list. However, there are others I shall mention:

The Dead Kennedys: "Viva Las Vegas" (Elvis Presley), "I Fought the Law" (Bobby Fuller), "Take This Job and Shove It" (Johnny Paycheck) (though I never heard the original in it's entirety.)

Metallica: "Turn the Page" (Bob Seger), "Die, Die My Darling (The Misfits)

Tori Amos: "Bonnie and Clyde '97 (Eminem), "Thank You" (Led Zeppelin), "Real Men" (Joe Jackson)

Tiamat: "Sympathy For the Devil" (the Rolling Stones)

Nirvana: "Mollys Lips" (the Vaselines). Other covers by Nirvana have been mentioned, I will refrain from mentioning them again.

Pansy Division: "Flower" (Liz Phair), "Real Men" (Joe Jackson)

Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower is brilliant

99 Red Balloons by Happy 2B Hardcore.

Yay for happy hardcore!
Quite simply the greatest cover i have (which you just erminded me of) is a Happy Hardcore version of Gangsta's Paradise. What makes it so great is that unlike most HH versions of songs it's not a remix of the original, ratehr some strange guy (think he's Indian) trying and failng hilariously to do the rap. When i'm not rushing to a lecture i'll put on some of the mistaken lyrics :)

I voted for "Ree Ree" because her cover version of "Respect" is considered the definitive version by many people who don't even know Otis Redding orginally recorded the song. Even my father, who loves "Ree Ree" to pieces didn't know Otis Redding originally recorded it.

I would give honourable mention to Stevie Nicks's cover of the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song "I Need To Know" in her live shows. She injects that song with a LOT of fire and emotion and basically turned a "blah" song for me into one of my favourites. In fact, if I ever did a concert, that's the song I would open with, and it's because of Nicks's version. Even my ex-roommate (who had no reason to be biased either way) said she did it about 10 times better than Petty did.

Johnny Cash's cover of Hurt has to be far and away the best cover ever. He took a song that, quite frankly, sounded like it was written by a pathetic whinging 20-something yr-old complaining about how ppl don't like him (well, d'uh, it's because you whine all the time) and turned it into a song of a broken lonely old man looking back at his life and realising everyone he knows has died.
Superb.
Another great one is Gin & Juice, a Snoop Dogg song covered by Ween. They turned it into a sort of rockabilly version. And it sounds great. I don't know if it's been released anywhere, but you can get it on Shareaza.

Common People by William Shatner, originally done by the band Pulp. I don't care if its William Shatner, its one of the best covers I've ever heard. And the fact that I am a bit of a Trekie has nothing to do with it. Ahem..

Enjoy! :D uh, well, this upload files thing is messed up, not working, invalid file type, can't take zip, jpg, gif, mp3 or wma, like only the most popular kind of files to upload. Whats up with that?

EXCELLENT list! And I menan good! And Jello Biafra kicks ass. You're location thing says Pittsburgh, are you an Anti-Flag fan?

I've always been a big fan of Stone Temple Pilots' cover of "Dancing Days" by Led Zeppelin, but that's probably due in no small part to my overwhelming everything-possibly-related-to-Led-Zeppelin bias.

Thomas Dolby did a great cover of "I Scare Myself."

Indeed he did.

I also have a pretty bitchin' cover of Psycho Killer by Moxy Fruvous.

Anything by Richard Cheese.

Nothing like a lounge jazz version of NIN's Closer, or Down with the Sickness (as featured on Dawn of the Dead)

Also, the G3 2004 version of Rockin' in the Freeworld, and Little Wing by Vai, Satriani, and Yngwie is pretty damn cool.

On that track, Nirvana's cover of Heartbreaker is pretty damn cool too.

I haven't heard The Selecter's I Can See Clearly Now. I love Ska and I like finding cover versions so I'll have to hunt that one out.

My current favourite cover is probably not everyone's cup of tea, but it's Nina Gordon from the Veruca Salts singing an acoustic version of NWA's Straight Outta Compton. Also there's a bluegrass version of Iggy Pop's Lust for Life by Bad Livers that is pretty cool.

Straight Outta Compton - Nina Gordon (http://www.ninagordon.com/audio/straightouttacompton.mp3). PARENTAL ADVISORY WARNING - lots of bad words beautifully sung.

Lust for Life - Bad Livers (http://soiuser.hyperchat.com/fimbrethil/lust.mp3).

Der Kommissar by After The Fire

Its the english version of a Falco song and the ONLY one I like better than the original.

I want to strangle everyone who has translated 99 Luftbaloons. They do such crappy jobs it makes me cry.

I remember that... They supported Duran Duran in the mid-80's and the single got some airplay and it's stuck in my head every since.

Have to say, this is one of my favourite NS threads! Everyone give it 5 stars!
